Does it go from room to room?
    A shopper on May 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does go from room to room but if your floor plan is at all large or confusing it does have issues. I have found that the vacuum will stay in the large areas of my home and at times I have to physically put it in a room that I want it to vacuum or it never really gets there. This is not an isolated problem with this vacuum and any robot vacuum that is not programmable (pretty much any vacuum that is actually affordable) will have the same issues.

What does the "wheel overload" error mean and how do I fix it?
    Christopher G on May 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: My best guess is that you don't. I just got this error tonight. I haven't run the unit in 2 months (at least), and a grand total of less than 6 times, and I'm getting this error on my right wheel. There's nothing obstructing it, but the left side wheel spins pretty freely, while the right side one is very stiff and hard to move. I suspect that the motor burned itself out and I'm just out $200, because I'm definitely past warranty.

Does this learn the shapes of the rooms, or is it always just a random pattern?
    Michael S on May 24, 2017

Can it have the mop attachment on while in vacuum mode ? can it switch automatically from mop to vacuum on my hardwood?
    Troy M on May 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The mopping feature is really just a microfiber cloth attached to a drip tank. The water drips from the tank and dampens the pad and the vacuum pulls the pad behind it to wet vacuum the floor. It is not an active mop. The vacuum will always run while the mop is on. This really is not a mop and really just wet dusts the floors.
    Is the moping pad reusable?

If there is a raised rubber intersection between rooms, will the product be able to drive over the raised bump and continue cleaning? What are some obstacles that I should look out for and remove before I activate the product? How often does the product require cleaning?
    A shopper on May 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We have a rubber electric cord cover (about 3 inches wide and sloping up to 1/2 inch tall) in a section of one of our rooms and it goes over it easily. It doesn't always seem to make it over in the same direction it started, but it successfully goes across the cover.

Are the main brushes for the vacuum actual brushes or rubber fins?
    A shopper on Jul 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They are brushes and the side sweeping brushes do a great job of bringing in material on the carpet and bare floor. This machine works better than my regular vacuum plus it cleans under my beg. Picks up stuff like crazy.
I have a Rooma specifically designed for pet hair; however, I spend a lot of my time cleaning the hair out of the brushes and rollers. Does anyone have that problem with this product?
    A shopper on Jul 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have this product and have an indoor cat. I have owned this unit for about a year and I have yet to have the problem of cat hair being caught in the roller. It is conveniently caught in the dust collector box and emptied after each use. Their is a brush attached that is very handy for getting all the dust, hair and debris from the collection container.
    Does it work with Alexa?

Does the room need light for the vacuum to work? Can it work in the middle of the night with all lights off and curtains closed?
    joshua b on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You don't need any light for it to work. But I don't you would want to have it working as you sleep. It's not loud at all but does make some noise
Why has the vacuum lost suction?
    A shopper on Jan 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Is there an error code displayed on the vacuum's LCD/LED indicator? Check the user's manual to find out what the code means. If there is no code, check the following:

    1. Check the waste container. If it's full, the vacuum won't have room for more dirt, even though suction is fine. Empty the waste container and suction should return.
    2. Check the entry airway. You should see an error code that looks like "AUBF," indicating the vacuum has sensed that the airway is obstructed; sometimes it fails to detect an obstruction.
    3. Ensure the waste container access door is closed properly (outside where it says "PUSH").
    4. Check waste container the filters. These need to be cleaned and/or replaced every so often. You can visually detect if there is dirt blocking the filters inside the waste container (the attached brush is useful).
    5. Check to make certain dirt hasn't built up inside the machine's waste container cavity. This will cause a baffle-effect that reduces suction (again, use the attached brush, or a damp-not-wet-sponge).
    6. If using the rotating brush insert on the entry airway, ensure it's not choked with pet hair or other objects.
    7. Ensure the rotating "whisker" attachments are installed and not choked with hair/string/etc. The vacuum is more effective when these are operating properly.
    8. Ensure the battery is charged. If the machine detects it has too little charge to operate, it will search for its charging station in a similar pattern to the zig-zag cleaning mode. It makes an audible, "Start charging!" alert when it properly docks and, "Charging complete!" when fully charged.
    9. There is an audible difference between when the suction fan is operating and when it is not. When the vacuum stops moving as it approaches an obstruction, it will be almost silent if suction has stopped. If the battery is charged and the vacuum is silent when not moving, your suction fan may have failed.
What happens to the mopping feature if there is a carpet in the room?

Very nice robotic vac for the $
I've owned Roomba units for years, and like them very much. I saw this, and was curious as to how it would compare. I've only had this vacuum for a couple days, so this is my initial impression.

It took me a bit to set the clock, kept messing with it, and finally was able to set it. Not a big deal, but definitely annoying.

This unit has dual side brushes, which I think is an excellent feature. It makes it so that it can grab dust/debris from both sides.

I almost didn't see the spare HEPA filter. It looks like a piece of the styrofoam in the box, lol. Make sure you pull it out of the slot in the styrofoam, so you don't accidentally throw it away..

Smartvac is MUCH quieter than any of the three Roombas I own, and it doesn't bang into furniture as hard. It won't clean as close to the baseboards and corners, unless you set it to edge clean. I set it for zig zag, and then hit the edge clean after a while. It picks up a lot of hair and dust, I think it does a pretty good job.

Sometimes it will get hung up on the hearth pad for my wood stove, but so does Roomba. What impressed me, is how often it's able to free itself from obstacles that Roomba gets hung up on.

Today I used the mopping feature for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy changing the attachments was. It does a decent job of damp dusting the floor. Don't expect it to scrub, it works by the water tank keeping the mop pad damp and dragging it across the floor. I like this feature more than I thought I would. Since our 1st floor is all wood or tile, it worked well.

For the price the Smartvac is great. It does a good job, pretty comparable to Roomba.

The Roomba, IMHO, is definitely made better, more heavy duty, less brittle plastic. But the Roomba also costs a lot more to get the features that the Smartvac has. As far as I know, I don't think there is a Roomba that will damp mop. I'm pretty sure you would have to buy a separate mopping robot.

The only thing I wish this unit had, is a few virtual walls, but from reading the Q&A section, they should be available separately soon.

We'll see how this stands up over time, but so far, I'm very pleased with Smartvac's performance.

    Good first-time robotic vacuum
This is my first robotic vacuum. Overall, I am fairly pleased with it and would recommend it to most others. I think this vacuum is best suited to be put on a daily schedule and that way it will clean up the small amount of dust that accumulates as it accumulates.

I would list the following pros and cons:

-$$ Super cheap vacuum. You can even go $100 cheaper and get the younger brother for $100, which has admittedly smaller features (smaller battery, smaller motor, small dust bin, can't program a schedule, can't mop).
-Easy to use. You can do all of the advanced setup, or you can just change it and tell it to manually go without much more setup.
-Good vacuum and quiet operation for a vacuum. I was surprised at how much fine dust this thing catches - and still catches. While not whisper quite, it is not difficult to talk over it.
-Good out-of-the-box logic. It seems programmed well to handle your default cleaning without much guidance. However, there are limitations (see more in cons).
-It does in fact avoid the drop-down stairs well; it has never fallen down the stairs (yet). Although once it did get it's right wheel caught on the edge and I later found it lying there helpless.
-It can find its way back to the charging station very easily.
-If you hardly vacuum or have lots of debris on your floor then, the dust bin may be a bit small. But if you put this thing on a daily schedule then the dust will only be incremental and you will not have to empty the dust bin very often at all. The first two times my dust bin was basically full. After that, and I only have a little bit. Which is a good thing as it means that the vacuum is being used frequently enough to prevent buildup of dust in the house.

-Just like you have to babyproof a house, you will also have to vacuum proof your house in like manner. USB or power cords on the floor? The vacuum will get caught in those. Really complex furniture patterns that the robot can barely fit into? It will probably get stuck there too. This is more of an issue for people (like me) who may have never owned one of these before and wasn't quite expecting it.
-Docking base not heavy enough. As the vacuum enters and exits the base, it always moves it - sometime enough so that the charging cord gets awfuly close to getting caught in the machine.
-The control logic is very good, but on my (complex) floor layout with furniture galore it gets stuck about 1 of every 4 cleans. I would recommend another sensor (or two) and incrementally improving the control logic. I get that his is hard (I also program things to operate autonomous, so I really do get it). But, hopefully a software patch can come out that will make it even more robust. So hopefully the R&D/Design team sees this review and improves it.
-It can get stuck in some weird places that I feel it shouldn't. It doesn't like floors with any sort of large sloped threshold, and sometimes it will get caught at the top of stairs. Again, I think minor hardware and software tweeks can fix this in the future.

Overall, I would recommend this vacuum. It is certainly not perfect, but for the feature set and price it is a good choice.

For the price, you can't go wrong
I purchased this as a fathers for myself. My wife does the vacuuming in the house and with 2 dogs, its a non stop need. I figured if I purchased this, it would hopefully get rid of most of the dog hair balls floating around the house and also reduce the need for vacuuming, even if by a little. My wife is a huge skeptic of things like this so she set out to give it a try.

    Area of use:

A mix of carpet, hardwood and tile. We have a couple area rugs on the hardwood and the carpet. The area rugs have padding under them.

    First 4 days of use:

The Strata works very well and has greatly reduced the number of dog hair balls we see floating around the main floor, especially on the hardwood where we seemed to see tumbleweed like hair balls daily! They are gone! The carpet also has a cleaner look as if my wife had just run a vacuum.

    Down sides:

The Strata has a couple times gotten stuck on one of the area rugs, so we just pull it up before running the Strata. Not a big deal.

The Strata also got stuck under the couch a couple times. The funny thing is after the first time I blocked off the couch, or so I thought. The Strata will definitely find a way to get to every area of the floor its on to vacuum, which is actually a positive. Hopefully they will come out with the invisible wall that some have talked about.

Overall I must say for $200 it was a great investment. It does reduce the overall constant need to vacuum the house, especially having 2 dogs. If we didn't have dogs, its possible that we would only need to vacuum a couple times a month.

I do see that the plastic, as someone mentioned in the review, seems a bit cheaper than say a far more expensive unit. Having said that, the old saying "you get what you pay for" doesn't hold true here. While the material may feel cheap, the product packs a powerful punch and I may invest in a 2nd one for my upstairs floor of my house.

We are very happy with this product!

Great Little Robot - Spare Parts are a problem
This is a good little vac. I am still amazed by what it picks up every day. The only problem is finding spare parts, they are not available from Monoprice (yet?) and are hard to find elsewhere.

    Still no replacement parts
It was mentioned several months ago that parts were "coming soon." The manual specifically states: "Note: If you notice a loss in suction power, the HEPA filter may need to be cleaned with warm water. The HEPA filter should be replaced after two washes with water."

Even if you typically only get cables from this site try this
I have been shopping with mono price since around 2012. They have always exceeded my expectations on price and performance. This vacuum is no exception. It is superior to the $450 roomba I had purchased a few years ago and much better designed. It does both edge cleaning and spot cleaning. It also comes with a mopping function. While it won't replace traditional mopping yet(fingers crossed for v2) it does provide nice additional functionality. Finally, I am hopeful that mono price will sell accessories and parts for this product for cheap. Some competitors charge a lot to try and make you upgrade the entire vacuum. I'm hopeful that mono price will change this trend making it easy to replace rollers or bins. I highly recommend this product to anyone including families with pets or college students with allergies.

    Pleasantly Surprised
I've seen the other more popular vacs for years, but never at this price point. Monoprice rarely lets me down, and my wife and I always wanted this for our cat hair issue. it was easy to operate, stayed well clear of going down the stairs, and is very sturdy. The nice surprise was looking in the waste bin after the first run. Wow, it had picked up fine hairs, embedded dirt, etc. that we didn't even see. The only drawback is that it sees thicker rugs as obstacles, and if it takes on our largest threshold that separates a wood floor to tile - it hangs itself up and we have to place it back into action. We've placed some more defined barriers in its way to prevent this, which is a small price to pay for having it vacuum your house without lifting a finger. Cleaning out the waste bin is easy, and it has a strong battery. The programming is solid and we get a kick seeing how it navigates around or finds its way back home.

    Really cleans
I was hesitant to purchase this for so much money, but it is well worth the cost. It does a better job of picking up dirt than my regular vacuum. I like it comes with an extra pair of side brushes so when they wear out you can easily replace them. Another plus is it can go under my bed where a regular vacuum cannot go.
Easy to program with a voice acknowledgement of what it is doing. Great that it puts it self away for recharging after it is done cleaning .
The multi-filter system works well and keeps dust from going back into the room. Easy to clean out the container when I arrive home and it is back in its place charging for the next scheduled cleaning.
The cons are small since it does so such a great job of cleaning. The one con is it can only be scheduled at a certain time every day. I would like to clean maybe every 2nd or 3rd day so as not to wear out the battery to soon.
Over all a great vacuum for a one bedroom apartment like mine.

    I like it
Well this is my first robot vac and I am happy with it. I do wish it would get closer the the edges. I also found that after running it for 1 hour and 15 minutes in one small room, it never went back to the base. In the manual it says that it will once it finished cleaning. Also, I found that the virtual wall from roomba works great. This is what i am using today.
    June 3, 2017
For the price, it works good!
This thing works as expected for the price. It does a decent job of cleaning in between actual cleaning sessions. It is not going to replace your actual vacuum, but it works well enough at small pickups. It is well built, and easy to empty. It actually does a surprisingly good job of going up onto, or down off of the rug we have in living room. If it gets stuck it lets you know to give it a push with an audible cue. Our house has cats, and it has no problem picking up fur on the ground. However between the fur and rug the dust bucket fills up quite quickly and needs to be emptied frequently. I would definitely recommend this product at this price point.
