Hows does the EMC function work? I would like to use this for announcements and have the audio stop when someone is on the microphone. Do you offer a microphone that would work with this product?
Michael M
on Nov 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The mic priority and EMC are different functions. The Mic Priority that you are asking is an easy setting. Use the MIC 1 Input on the front of the amp. Adjust the Mute dial on the back to set how much other audio is allowed to pass. if you want total mute then turn the dial all the way. You can use any mic with a 1/4" cable Balanced or Unbalanced (TS, TRS). It is best to use a mic with its own on/off switch because the mute will engage anytime the system "hears" signal from the mic. We recommend our Desktop Paging Mic.
The EMC feature allows you to connect your audio system to your fire safety alarm. When the alarm is triggered the Audio will mute except for Mic1 so you can give evacuation instructions.

The EMC input is for an unbalanced Mic. I suspect a switched mic would work best. When a signal is present at the EMC input all other input signals are "ducked" (adjustable mute level, up to 30 db) so the EMC mic has precedence.
I have seen such mics on the Monoprice web site, in the past, some offered with other products

So the EMC function only works with the Mic 1 input. When the Mic is triggered the emc will cut out all other inputs other than the mic 1 input. Our tech that did our PA system install just piggybacked 2 mics into the Mic 1 input so that both would trigger the EMC. We used the shure 515SBG-18X in our setup

We installed this for a client who was having trouble. Worked well, is a great unit. The 2 screw terminals on the rear are for the override input which normally would be a microphone. Shuts down the music when it gets an input signal.

I have 10 x 70v horn speakers. Will these amplifier be able to power all of the 10 speakers?
Fernando R
on Nov 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It really depends on how much power you will put through your speakers. I would tap the speakers (assuming they are all equal) at about 20W. It should be plenty for the home space. Have not had any problems with these amps, since the last 7 years. I buy 6-10 amps every year for commercial installs and have 0 complaints. RP

That depends on the wattage of your speakers. If the 70v speakers dont have tapped transformers to set your power level, you will need to get them. I would limit the power of each speaker so that the total does not exceed the output of the amplifier.

Depends should be able to. What is the wattage on the horn? 250w divided by 10 is 25watts available per horn. Most 70volt speakers have a 'tap setting' that allows you to adjust the wattage on the speaker to fit within the range of the amp.

It depends on the wattage you are driving the speakers at. At 4. 6 or 8 watts you should be fine but at 10 or higher you will most likely be over driving the amp. 10 wats may quell but i cannot remember the amount of overhead loss of this amp

I want to use this at a football field to call youth football games and play music during breaks/time outs. This would be connected to a pair of outdoor 8 ohm speakers. Would this work for that purpose and would the output be stereo from the music source?
Jude L
on Aug 17, 2022
BEST ANSWER: You could use it for that depending on the speakers. It’s rare that two speakers would be enough for a football stadium/field. If it’s a permanent installation, you should consider several speakers at 70v. If I remember correctly, this is a mono amp not stereo. Which is what you want for announcements and music.

This is not a stereo amplifier. It is designed primarily as a voice announcement amp driving 70v horns. It's not ideal but it would work in your scenario if you are primarily using it for public address announcements and you don't mind the music being mono.

Yes. Remember this is not a stereo amp.
On the 4-16 ohm terminal, hook the two speaker plus wires to the 8 ohm speakers in parallel, and the minuses to the common screw.
this amp also allows for many more speakers to be run with the 70 or 100 volt taps (with the appropriate transformers) if you want more..

how many speakers can you run off this amp?

BEST ANSWER: If you are unfamiliar with constant voltage speaker systems I would recommend you take a look at the manual that is available for download from the product page at the bottom of the Full Specs tab. Page 8 gives a good explanation of 70V systems.
If you run the amp in 4-8Ω mode you can only run 2 8Ω speaker in parallel. This will provide 120W to each speaker and deliver a HiFi full range sound. Paired with our Sycamore, Amber, Alpha, or Caliber in-wall and ceiling speakers it will sound really good.
70V operation will reduce bandwidth a little for slightly less than HiFi sound (about 50Hz - 15kHz). The advantage of this mode is the ability to run a lot more speakers. If you use our 14887 and select the 3W tab you could run up to 64 speakers.

It is a 240W amp, so if you are using 70V speakers, you can usually adjust the wattage at each speaker. Add up the wattage of all the speakers and you have the total amount that are need. On a 70V speaker, you use the wattage as the volume control at each speaker. I recently did a job where I had carpet in one area, tile in another area, and a warehouse. I used 4 watts in the tile area, 8 watts in the carpet area, and 20 watts in the warehouse. I would suggest that you not go more than 80% of the total watts that the amplifier is rated. On these particular amps, there is a fan that kicks in if you start to drive more than about 50% of the output capacity. If all of your speakers are low watts, then you can have a lot of speakers.

At 70v, Use 80% of total amp output. Approx. 192W/wattage of speaker = number of speakers.
The tap on speakers usually will be less than 15w per speaker for background music.

After reading the manual I realize that the entire system consisting of the subwoofer and the 4 satellite speakers acts like a single 70v device on my 70v chain of speakers. If I am understanding this correctly, I need to use the speaker wire size guidance for the low impedance speaker to connect the satellites to the subwoofer (e.g. so larger gauged wire) while still user smaller gauge wire from AMP to subwoofer?

BEST ANSWER: As a general practice, It is not recommended to turn most amplifiers on without have a "Load"- Speakers. Many amplifier manufacturers have the same occurrence when turning their products on. It isn't a defect and you shouldn't have any issues, but it is best to connect speakers to it. If the light does the same thing, it almost certainly is indicating the internal Protection Circuit is functioning properly. If the light stays on, it means the speakers are wired incorrectly or that the impedance is too low for the amp to operate properly. I installed on for a Customer last Summer and it has worked flawlessly with more than enough power for the 8 70 Volt Speakers attached to it tapped at 30 Watts Each.
