BEST ANSWER: The fat part of the housing in gunmetal grey is about 8.4 mm wide The stepped down part of the housing in gold plate is 5.9 mm in diameter The height of the stepped down section is about 2.5 mm. I have a sturdy phone case and this is a no go there, but my computer connects to the speaker with this cord and it's great for that application

It is just a hair under 6mm. It fits my headphones without touching screw-in threads.

Would using this item 18632 with a device that doesn't have a microphone still work just as well as item 18629? It would be nice to have the flexibility to use the mic. But most of the time will strictly be speakers.

BEST ANSWER: This is meant to be a stereo audio cable, not a digital communication cable. The plug type is 3.5mm TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) and on an audio cable these are typically left channel, right channel, and ground, in that order. (from Wikipedia, "Phone Connector (audio)")
The right channel in audio cabling is typically indicated by red, and left as black or white. I would expect that the red is the tip, the bare copper wire is the sleeve, or longest contact up toward the cable, and the blue goes to the "ring" contact in between. But you can verify this with the resistance setting of a multimeter, by measuring between a wire and one of the contacts of the plug, until you find one that shows no resistance.

Not for stereo audio
I have only used these as stereo patch cables from a pc or pc components. I have not used these as true single channel trs but why would I use a 3.5 mm for trs speakers?!?!. As a stereo cable - it's the worst I've ever seen. Thin and highly susceptible to ground noise. The connections are not solid and create static when the cable moves or sways while in use. Poor build quality.
3 stars - the average of 0 for stereo but still a possible 5 for the trs capability I did not use - just don't move the cable. Ever.

not high quality, very thin wire
I didn't expect high quality and I didn't receive high quality with this very thin wired cable. They work, if you are lucky and careful, for about 5-6 months, then they short out and all you hear is static from the source. The six foot cord I bought at the same time has a robust cable but the plug doesn't stay plugged in to our Roku remote as it pops out on its own. What you need is the plugs of the three foot cord and the cable of the six foot cord. Aaargh!

Fine.
It looks and works fine. I don't know about durability, as I haven't had it long. I wish there was a beefier, braided version.

Monoprice Onyx Series Auxiliary 3.5mm 6 ft
I purchased three of these one in 10 ft and 2 in 6 ft. The 10-foot one works great I had no problems with it was just too long and my chair Wheels went over it and damaged it. So I ordered it because I thought the relative quality would be maintained and I would have no issues with them. However upon arrival the 6-foot cords fail to operate. They do not send any audio from my microphone to my computer whatsoever. I even plugged in the 10-foot cord that work I plugged in the microphone itself directly into the computer and its function fine. I can't even tested the headset end the audio cable on several different other cables just to make sure it wasn't the headset. Otherwise the cable was the problem it didn't send any of the audio and I've sent here now for well over an hour trying to troubleshoot it. Sincerely don't buy this cable until these issues are resolved.
