Is there an optical line output on this unit?
Jeff F
on Feb 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Nope, just pre level for say feeding a subwoofer and L\R speaker level. Only 1 set of RCA jacks for an input (labeled for CD but use them for anything @ line level). You can connect via bluetooth for your phone or something, so that's pretty much an input as well, just not a hard input.

No, the only outputs are a Pre Out L & R for output to a powered Sub woofer or other power amplifier. Two 5-way binding posts for the Right speaker and two 5-way binding posts for the Left speaker (impedance 4-16ohm). Very minimal outputs but very pleasing sound into a pair of B&W DM602 monitors and somewhat ancient B&W ASW600 sub. Suits my home office very nicely. A Schiit Mani pre amp feeds the CD input from my also ancient Dual 1245 sporting and equally ancient Shure V15-III.

Can I hook a Fm tuner to this amp?
New User U

BEST ANSWER: That shouldn't be a problem if the tuner has standard unbalanced RCA connections. However, that would occupy your only line input meaning that to switch between the tuner and, say, a CD player, you'd have to manually disconnect one to connect the other.

Yes, you may hook up one (1) line level device to the "CD" input and one (1) Blue tooth device. I use an external Line Level selector switch on mine and hook up a DVD player and a TUNER and my DISH box.

No, this amplifier Is for powering a set of eired speakers, such as bookshelf or floorstanders. The bluetooth mode it has is only for receiving signal and will not transmit audio to a pair of headphones. Even if you could connect your headphones it would provide you with no benefit as wireless headphones are internally amplified. If you have wireless headphones you should just be able use them directly with your phone or get a cheap usb bluetooth transmitter if you're using a computer.

Maybe if the bluetooth function worked properly but mine does not. It has latency and keeps dropping out so I don't use that function. Apart from that the amp is brilliant. I love having a line out from the valve preamp and use this with another amp that I built called an Aleph J designed by Nelson Pass.. The sound is amazing.

If you are thinking about bluetooth headphones that will not work as there is no way to pair the headphones to the amplifier. You can use something like the Sennheiser RS 175 RF Wireless Headphone System which uses a transmitter to connect to the headphones and an auxillary cable to connect to the amplifier.

In one sense tubes are different than transistors. The life of a transistor is shortened by the number of on/off and cold/hot/cold cycles it endures. It is best to leave them on all the time. Tubes are a bit like light bulbs. They have a specific amount of hours that they will burn before failing. So in general, it's good to turn off the amplifier after use.
That said, remember that these tubes are for preamp only. the amplifier still uses a standard transistor output to run your speakers. Thus the "hybrid" title. These tubes are relatively small and put out very little heat so should last several years whether left on or off. The tie breaker here is probably that it will cost a bit for the power to leave them on 24/7/365.

Solid state traditionally can be left on for best results but generally tube equipment should be turned off between sessions. Yes it's about tube life but also safety. There is a risk of a tube blowing or other part failing to cause overheating. That won't be good and could be dangerous.
PS. This is a really good mid level amp. And it's got a cool factor with the way the tubes are set up.

Can it be used as a guitar power amp?

BEST ANSWER: Guitar amps are designed differently. For one thing they are not high.fidelity. some Amt of distortion is part of their charm. The designers aim for some recognizable idiosyncratic guitar sound. V.s.. The accurate reproduction of the input.. Could you plug a guitar into a hifi amp? I do no see why not although the typical electric guitar pickup signal will be probably a bit too strong for it. Will you love the sound? Probably not.it will be too clean and bring out any noise amd imperfection your guitar has instead of producing that creamy Santana tone you are after.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, at least there is no plug in, and it doesn't put out a lot of power. I have it running two small-medium speakers, and the Pre-Out running a distrubution amp throughout my house...and I max the volume on my iPHone and on this amp, and for low volume recordings...I'd like just a little more. I've got a hybrid bass guitar amp and it's got a couple tubes running a solid state amp for the best of both, so I think you're on the right track. Said amp is a GK MB Fusion, but a lot more $ than this little guy. Good luck.

At only 50W, this would not be very powerful, though but might be OK for a guitar (not a bass, etc.). The only input to the amp other than Bluetooth access is 2 RCA jacks, both LINE IN. So you would need a preamp if you wanted to run a guitar through it.
The only real benefit of having this device is that it really looks cool, and anyone who appreciates tubes would love the thing. But don't expect massive power. It's really meant to play Bluetooth stuff (Pandora, iTunes, YouTube, etc., etc.) from your phone. I love the look of it.

Not recommended. A few main reasons are:
1) This is a stereo amp, and your guitar is mono. You need a special Y adapter plug.
2) The stereo preamp is not compatible with the guitar output.
You can do it with some outboard adapters, but it is more trouble than it is worth. It may work for a low volume practice amp, but in a concert setting you will blow the amp. There are plenty of low cost guitar amps that will work much better than this. Chances are you will blow the amp at some point.

The Monoprice amp is better used for powering stereo equipment. The inputs are mini phono for running a MP3, CD player or fm tuner. The amp does not handle low impedance too well at loud volumes.

I own the 25 watt version of this amp. I'm wanting to know if I was to move to the 50 watt version, this one, If I would have a significant increase in ability to drive a pair of def tech 8020t speakers which have built in powered subs. I may be better sticking with the less powerful amp for now, if the difference is not very dramatic. Pre-amp outputs are not really needed for an external sub, given the 8020t's configuration. If It would be for an increase in presence when driving those speakers in the mid to high range, I might upgrade. Any input would help me to make a decision on this purchase. Can anyone advise?

Everyone should keep in mind what the ohm rating and sensitivity of the speaker they are choosing to use is. I'm running Dynaudio X14's which are rated 8ohm and 85db sensitivity. At that sensitivity, they require a good deal of power to get them moving. The power rating is 53 watts a channel at 4ohms. At ohms it's going to be closer to 30 watts. Somebody here asked what the power output would be at 8ohms but nobody answered. Maybe the staff member can address that.

Paul, I upgraded to the 50w because the 25 wwasn't powerful enough to drive the number of speakers in my house. I play my music very load something, while playing guitar with the record. Using theBlueTooth cuts down on power too. I had to put a power booster for my turntable. I have the volume cranked up all the way and I am not happy with the volume output. I have owned both amps as well. The 25w provided a full range of bass on my Klipsch Heresy's but was well short of noteworthy. After sending back two of the 25w amps for bad tubes I now drive a pair of 2016 Klipsch Khorns with the 50w as well as a 12" Klipsch sub. There is no comparison in the two - save the 25w for the bookshelf in the office - the 50w is the real deal.

Paul. I held off on the 25w and waited for the 50w for this purpose. I'm driving a pair of B&W bookshelf speakers. The more power the better for overall frequency response and noise. The 50w sounds great and has plenty of power. You never know when you may upgrade speakers. I also swapped out the stock tubes with new JJs which work well. Hope this helps.

I have a pair of Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speakers and I'm a bit of a neophyte when it comes to this stuff. Will there be a noticeable difference in performance between this 50w model and the 25w one driving these speakers? Are there any other reason I should get this one over the 25w model?

BEST ANSWER: All i know is that the Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-B522's are high efficiency speakers and so to my understanding is you don't actually need a high powered amp to drive them. I can't comment in noticeable difference between the two, since i don't own the Andrew Jones nor the 25w Monoprice to make actual comparisons.
I have the 50 watt model hooked up to a pair of Paradigm monitor 3's and although they are a little bit undersized, they really fill up my mid-size bedroom with barely close to 1/4 on the volume control knob setting.
If you are going to be using the amp in a living room or a wider area, then i would definitely suggest to get the 50 watt Monoprice. if a more bigger and robust sound is what you are trying to achieve..

Either amp will drive your bookshelf speakers and I'd be surprised if you could tell the difference even in head-to-head comparison when played at reasonable volume, and excessive volume is not the forte of bookshelf speakers. That being said, I would buy the 50-watt amp for the line output. You can power a sub-woofer, and that would definitely improve the overall sound with the B522s. The cost saving is not substantial enough to warrant buying the less expensive unit without line output, in my opinion.

50 watt amp will give you 3db more headroom before clipping. Keeping any solid state amp from clipping is very important as they sound very bad when they clip. Unless your speakers are more than 94db sensitivity I would recommend the 50 watt amplifier.

If you do the math the 25w model really only outputs at 9wpc @ a typical 8ohm speaker where the 50w model outputs around 32wpc @ 8ohm. Not many speakers available that have a recommended amp below 10w. Get the 50watt model!!

It does as the 125 vac power cord has the ground pin yes. No other ground should be needed. What I did was to "lift
the ground thereby breaking the ground loop which induced the hum.

This CAN be run as a 2.1 setup. I run regular speaker cable to a set of stand-mounted Polk Audio Lsi7, and run 2 (left, right) RCA cables from the amp to a powered sub. Sounds great. BTW, the Polks are 4 ohm, and the Monoprice pumps them with no problem. Thing’s a little locomotive.....

Nope, I don' think so.. It is a 2.0 amplifier and for sub you need a pre-amp to connect this and your sub. The best use for this is combination with 2.0 bookshelf speakers in your study, or bedroom where you want good music or want to listen to your turntable.

BEST ANSWER: The unit needs to be manually powered on/off by physically depressing the power button, so will not wake or sleep automatically. Immediate answer - No. [If your expecting automatic on/off of the unit relative to receiving a Bluetooth signal?] However, I use mine at work on my desk and at times, I have to turn my phone off, but I leave the unit on. No hum or buzz. Then when I return to my phone [bluetooth], it picks back up again. I turn the system off at the end of the day.

BEST ANSWER: I have two units, and both have a minor hum that i only hear (through the speakers) with nothing playing or the volume so low so can barely hear it. In troubleshooting I discovered that when I unplug the coax cable that comes from my DISH satellite box, the hum goes away. Note that I run my TV’s audio into the Monoprice setup in both rooms (both separate rooms, but both having DISH audio connected via the , through the “CD” switch setting). For music, I run through the Bluetooth switch setting.
From further research the DISH satellite probably is NOT properly grounded. I think the hum occurs through both switch settings regardless of the source, but when i unplug the coax cable out of the mix, problem solved. Check grounds, and the ground(s) of the source. This is all outside my wheelhouse, but i’m a good troubleshooter so hopefully this helps you find the issue.

The first thing I would do to try to fix the hum would be to replace the tubes, there might be a bad tube , you could also try sliding the tubes in and out of the tube socket a few times to make sure the tubes Are making good contact or it might be something as simple as loose speaker wires, hope this helps , good luck.

Hi, I was looking for a solution for a small condo living room. I was hoping to combine this AMP with a pair of in-wall speakers. Will the Amber 6.5-inch Carbon Fiber 3-way In-Wall Column Speaker with Ribbon Tweeter Product # 15700 work well, or is the amp not powerful enough? Would you suggest smaller speakers? Would you suggest adding a powered sub-woofer? Or a bigger AMP? How loud is 50wX2?

50 watts by 2 is not that loud in my opinion. I am using a 150 watt by 2 channel amp for these speakers. If you desire bass with some presence than yes you will desire a subwoofer. I paired mine with an older JBL dual 8" sub being run with an additional 150 watt by 2 amp. Keep in mind that an amplifier is not supposed to be turned up beyond half way. If you do you will loose details in the sound and send distortion and possibly damage the speakers with the under power distortion. My personal opinion of these speakers is that they are very directional. You need to sit inbeteeen the two of them to get a good stereo image. I would prefer a slightly warmer midrange but for the money they are great speakers.

I'm using the 50w amp with an older REL sub and Kef LS50's which are pretty inefficient speakers at 85db. That being said I'm only turning the volume up to the 10:00 position (approx 40%) and i get readings of 90-95 decibels in my listening position which is 11 feet from the speakers. It's loud and it sounds fantastic. For fun I hooked up some very efficient older Infinity's rated at 100db. I left the volume at 35% and hit play and Bam! I had to jump up and turn it down fast. It was very loud and since it was after midnight I
didn't want to wake the neighbors.

I can't speak to those speakers, but this amp has ample power and cranks pretty good. I have it in my office on a pair of JBL G200s, and it rattles the entire house without too much effort. If you are planning to use as a main audio system in a living room, I would definitely consider a powered subwoofer as the in-wall speakers won't give you the bottom-end you're probably looking for.

Opinion, I would recomend going with a regular home theater amp for your purpose. this may be under powering your speakers and you would probably like the multiple configure options of a higher end reciever/amplifier. Again, opinion. This type of amp is geared more for the audio hobbyist in a bookshelf configuration. Perhaps pared with a turntable.

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for our interest in our tube amp. I would love for you to buy this product however I do not think this application will serve you for the best. The best part of the tube amp is the warm "color" it adds to the sound. Your 7.1 system requires that all channels work seamlessly together to provide as large a sound stage as possible. The coloration for you main L/R channels may distract from your movie going experience. This unit is designed for listening to music. It will serve you best in a den or second family room with a good set of bookshelf speakers and a small powered sub.

If you are planning to use this to drive your center channel, then it will work. Keep in mind that you would only use on of the channels which would leave you with only driving 25 watts to your speaker. This amp does not allow you to bridge the 2 channels together. If you are using this for your left and right front speakers, it will work. In a home theater it is better to have your channels match in various ways, such as power, speaker brands, timber, efficiency, etc.. Home theater demands have a greater peak need from a power perspective then listening to music. This amp performs well with Polk Audio bookshelf speakers playing AC DC's "Back In Black" on vinyl. I have not plugged any other speakers such as my tower speakers to see how they sound so I have no experience with a more demanding speaker. Hope this helps.

I measure 5 7/8" inches. This is from the surface the feet are on to the top of the square black cover behind the tube cages. With a 5 7/8" opening the amp would touch the top. A 6" opening would give you 1/8" gap. But you should also consider cooling air flow as well as bluetooth antenna reception if you're going to bury it in a cabinet. I like mine out in the open because half the reason I got it was for its looks.

I don't see why not. I am using a ATLP120 (I don't use the built in pre amp. I use a Schitt Mani pre amp) with a Ortofan Blue cartridge to drive a pair of Klipsch RF7 III's and SLP sub-woofer. I use the set up for vinyl and streamed audio files from my laptop using blue tooth in my home office.

Will work very well, sansui sp2500 x are very efficient 97 db/m speakers. Audio Technica LP 120 has line out, make sure to switch to line and you are good to go.

Can I connect a turntable without a preamp to the Monoprice 50-Watt Stereo Hybrid Tube Amplifier?

BEST ANSWER: No Stephen. This hybrid amp (tube preamp/solid state power amp) does not have a phono stage. Your turntable will need a separate phono preamp. Monoprice does sell a full tube amp (tube preamp and tube power amp) with a phono stage for $300. .

I needed a preamp for mine. There’s plenty that are pretty inexpensive. This amplifier is fantastic though

Yes, you can. The amp functions as an integrated one without a preamp.
