What does this answer mean? A Thunderbolt 3 port can both receive power input as well as power devices connected to the hub such as USB-A devices, Ethernet, memory cards, etc.. My question is related to the functions such a PD (Power Delivery). Some PD device do not work on HP devices.

Can this be wired backwards? Basically short built in cable connects to wall charger and then a usb C to C connector to laptop?

BEST ANSWER: If I understand your question, I believe the answer is "yes".
I run the adapter that came with my M1 MacBook through the USB C-C cable into the female USB C port on the hub. I use the Ethernet port and the 3 USB A ports for the usual. I plug the USB C pigtail into a female-to-male cable into one of the two ports on the left side of my Mac. Charging works.
(I also have a separate setup at a different location where the MacBook is powered through my LG monitor (which is plugged into the wall) via a USB C cable into the MacBook. This also works. In this confirmation, I'm not using the female USB-C port on the hub since that port is only for power. The hub ports get power from the Macbook. (Forward power, instead of "backward" configuration you're asking about)

Sorry, can't help you with that. It works very well plugged into my MacBook Pro 2016 but ido't use the c port on the hub. I believe it is pass through chaging but cannot but cannot be used for data. Rather disaapointed with that aspect.

As with some Apple products, it's called a charging port (which is what I use it for) so, it's highly unlikely that you could use it to drive a monitor. If it could be used with your monitor, they would likely advertise that so that they could attract more buyers.

That was my thought, hence the question. Is there anyone here who knows for sure. Monoprice?
I didn't completely understand exactly what you're trying to accomplish but, have you looked at Monoprice Product # 33572 or Product # 29434? To free up one of my thunderbolt 3 connectors, I was thinking of buying one but, their descriptions of what they can and can't do are also somewhat lacking.
I believe that port is power pass-through only. I haven't tried it, but the symbol above the port represents "DC Power" and is advertised as a power port. My guess is it would have a monitor symbol instead or in addition to if it were compatible.

Thanks Cory, How long is the usb-c pigtail on the adapter? do you have a monitor attached as well? How is it attached?
The dongle's cable is 4" long. I have a 4K monitor attached via a separate USB-C to Displayport cable (which also passes audio to my monitor which then passes that audio on to a stereo system via a headphone jack). So with this adapter, I connect two cables to my machine to establish 7 connections (3x USB, power, ethernet on this adapter, monitor and sound on second cable). Nice.
Thanks. I assume you have the mono price DisplayPort adapter. I am still trying to decide on the 4K monitor. Last question, which 4K monitor do you have and what would you recommend?

I've been using this hub for about a year with a 2017 MacBook Pro. The power pass has never worked and figured it was a an operating system issue. I used it for as an adapter for my USB A logitech web cam. I just got a new MacBook Air M1 2020 and the pass thru power still does not work! Tried it with a tablet, iphone, magic keyboard and track pad. Nada. Any suggestions?

Versatile on Android, but draws significant power
I used this on a Chromecast with GoogleTV, and it worked including PD passthrough, but I had to bump up the supply power significantly to stop the Chromecast from complaining that the power was insufficient. Even though I never ended up using it, the network adapter seems to have a lot of power demand on its own at idle. The USB-A ports were a convenient addition. I would expect this would be compatible with most modern Android phones and tablets as well, but be prepared for the power draw.

It works, but not seamlessly
I will preface this by saying I'm using this dongle with my MacBook Pro (intel), but I don't see how that should affect anything.
I'm disappointed by this adapter. It appeared to be the inexpensive answer to my USB-A and ethernet needs, and while it does work, I'm able to get an ethernet connection and access peripherals through the USB-A ports, it doesn't do it as seamlessly as I'd hoped.
In my experience I need to plug anything into the adapter first, before I plug the adapter into my computer. Even then, there's no guarantee that the peripheral or ethernet connection will make it through to my machine (I frequently have a mass storage device that does not show up when I plug the adapter in). If the adapter is already plugged into my computer and I plug the ethernet cable in second, I will get no internet connection (but if I then unplug the adapter and plug it back in, it connects). I've also noticed on multiple occasions the USB-C port I've had the adapter plugged into stops working until I restart my computer.
When the adapter is working, it at least stays working (no connectivity drop outs or USB disconnects), but getting all the ports up and running can be a pain. I would not recommend this adapter.

Easy to use but not great in reliability
Some of my USB devices will regularly show connection issues when connected to this dock.
On Windows this device setup quickly (even the ethernet port) which was really nice.

USB C port expansion
It works like it should and is being used now with my new MacBook Air.

Not reliable ethernet. Flakey USB
Half the time when I wake my Mac the ethernet has stopped working. You have to unplug it and your power delivery cable if you have one plugged in to reset it. Many times this causes issues with USB devices. I've tried several mice in the device and it starts to make a bad lag and stutter on them. This also usually requires unplug everything from it including the power cable to get it work again.
Also it doesn't pass-through nearly enough power. I was only getting 53 watt through it, which would cause my Mac to drain under any intense tasks. Just not worth it.
