Can you use this adapter to backup your existing drive to an eternal hard drive?
A shopper
on Jan 4, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You can. It is a way to connect a stand-alone drive device through the a USB port. Once connected, you can use it for backup or to clone your existing drive or as surplus storage space. If you are looking to create an external drive from, you may consider the drive housing as a better option, because it will protect the drive and work the same way. This one offers no protection if you want to leave it connected for automated backups.

taking a chance on correctly understanding the question... the cable is ued to attach the e(x?)ternal drive (bigger end) to a computer usb port (smaller end). backup (or copy) from the existing drive to the e(x?)ternal drive can then be facilitated via the computer. afaik, one cannot simply connect the 2 drives via this cable for backup

Yes. However, you won’t be able to boot from it unless you were to use a hard drive ‘clone’ program. If you just want your files backed-up, just use “file explorer” (Windows) or “finder” (Mac).

This will work with all SATA HDD's. I have used it with 2.5" SATA HDD's and there is no difference with 5.25" drives.

BEST ANSWER: You should be able to. I was able to migrate my old HDD to the new SSD I installed in my laptop. Only grip is that the power adapter supplies was not what it showed in the pictures. It was for UK wall plugs. I reside in North America so I had to buy a travel adapter to use it. Check if that's still the case

It works
In converting from a desktop to a "gaming" laptop, wanted to still be able to use my desktop storage components. Ended up getting a unit designed for HD and SSD (multi-slot) for those but I use this for the rare times I want to use my DVD writer/reader.
