Do these work with Banana Plugs? Pin Plugs? Something Else?
New User U
on Mar 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The terminals are made to work with bare wires. You could use pin connectors but bare wire will give the best and most secure connection. The wires are always hidden and you will not be moving it around so no need for any plugs or pins.

I used banana plugs. I'm not sure what pin plugs are. I could see that bare wire or banana plugs were options. Banana plugs were very easy to connect to these.

They're a push style connection. Press down on the speaker's wire connector, slide your stripped speaker wire in, release and the wire is secure.

Should I build a box around these to improve the sound, as the wall that these are mounted on is open on the back? The other side of the wall is not finished, and I'm wondering if I should box them in? If so, should I also fill the void with insulation?
New User U
on Mar 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Well, I doubt it would help any, and most likely would degrade performance. In-wall speakers designed to work in an "infinite baffle" type of mounting, not a sealed or ported box. In addition, box dimensions are designed to work in tandem with the response curve of the speaker, resonant frequency, and other factors -- none of which are published for this speaker. You would need to invest more in testing equipment and software to find the correct enclosure parameters. However, loosely backfilling the stud space with insulation won't hurt.

Hi. I would highly recommend closing the back. These speakers are very good and have been a major upgrade from my Energy speakers. If you don't close the back the sound will not be as crisp as a great percentage of the sound waves will be escaping through the other side not to mention the bass will be dull and flat. Please also ensure you apply a plastic shield over the back if you are installing against an outside wall.

Actually, no. The speaker needs to move to create sound and the wall cavity allows this to happen. Putting a tight box around the back of the speaker could diminish sound quality and even blow the speaker. This is why most speakers have ported boxes. The port let's the air on the back side go somewhere.

I am not sure a box will improve the sound but it should dampen the sound going to the other room, espicially is there is some insulation as well. I used these in finished walls and added some insulation as sound deadening material and I am quite happy with the sound.

Building a box is a good idea, but interior walls don't necessarily have insulation so it might not make a noticeable difference. However, if you choose to add it later it wouldn't be difficult.

Can they used for front left/right and for rear surround ?
Santhosh X
on Mar 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes they CAN be used for the front or rear.
That decision is less about the speakers and more about your room size and your receiver output. If you are in a big room and trying to fill the room then these are probably too small. If you are in a smaller room and listening at a reasonable volume they will probably be fine. You might want to read a few blogs on speaker size and placement before you make the purchases.

I use mine for right and left two channel. I personally would use a middle designated speaker for center - 5.1 uses center for more mids and highs and a center is built to accommodate better. You definitely could use these, but might sound the best. FYI - These speakers are outstanding for the price.

Hi Dave - it seems you have all the answers regarding the Amber ribbon speakers. Are there any more details you can provide on the upcoming ribbon in-wall and ceiling line? I am mostly interested in dimensions. I have contractors finishing my basement and I getting close to needing to run low voltage and I have already purchased Alpha speakers (13683, 13616, 13618) for my home theater and would like to replace them with these ribbon speakers when they become available - can't wait until October to install though. I have depth limitations for the rear surrounds (3.5" total clearance) which is why I had to get the 6.5" alphas. My concern is that I don't want to have a larger hole in my wall than what the ribbon will need.
On another note, does anyone use these speakers (15700) as left front and right front speakers? I want to get these but am concerned they will overpower the alphas I will be using everywhere else. It would be great to know all the dimensions (depth included) of the upcoming ribbon speakers so that I can make sure I future proof my setup and have my contractors allow for them. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: The new Ambers are still in development. We have not finalized dims at this time. I am trying to keep the dims similar to the Alphas. 3.5" is my target depth for all of the installed speakers to fit within 2x4 studs.
The use of the Amber 15700 with Alpha surrounds seems to be a pretty popular formula. If you scroll through the reviews you will see quite a few folks doing just that.

I just don't want to repair any wall cut out if the cut out are different. Do you have any more info regarding the new Ambers? When will they be release? Thanks

The Amber and Alpha magnetic grilles are listed as being paintable - however, they have a thin cloth liner that looks to be spot-glued in the inside. When painting with spray paint, is it recommended to remove this cloth liner, and if so, how? Because it seems to be glued in, and when attempting so see if it was removable, I was most certainly going to rip it.

BEST ANSWER: The cloth scrims can be gently removed from the metal grill intact allowing the grills to be spray painted. The cloth scrims are there to make the speakers behind the grill less visible, if you want that look then you can replace scrims. If you as not worried about the shadows of the drivers being somewhat visible then you can omit the scrims.

Tear it out, then you can faintly see the underlying drivers after.
Leave it in, and depending on the thickness if paint, you may just be tearing it out after.

Great buy for the price!
I was skeptical buying these speakers because of the price but decided to give them a try because of the 30-day money back guarantee. I use them as my surround back speakers and I am 100% satisfied with them. My system consist of a pair of floor standing Klipsch RP-6000F, Klipsch center channel RP-404C, Klipsch R-51M bookshelf as surround and 4 SVS Prime Elevation speakers for my height channels. These speakers blend in perfectly with my system. The built quality is good considering the price point, they sit flush against the wall and they come with slim magnetic grills. Installation was also easy.

Good speaker for the money but...
Overall I love these speakers. They were packaged great and where everything I expected. Installation was quick and easy. In no time I was listening to music through my newly mounted speakers. I cant wait to get a new receiver so I can push these things a little harder. My only issue is the grills. I tried painting them and to say it was a disaster is an understatement. I figured instead of going through the work of trying to strip the paint off I would just purchase new ones. Unfortunately Monoprice doesn't sell just the grills. What happens if one of the grills actually gets damaged? Overall I'm happy but knocked one star off since I cant order replacement grills.

Alpha 6.5" In Wall
The carbon fiber of these speakers look great. Build quality is quite acceptable. Pivoting tweeter is a very nice feature. I have only been using these speakers for a week so they are no where near broken in yet but the sound is fine. There is some low end but I have them crossed over at 80 HZ with some foam behind them in wall to dampen the rear/side sound. I look forward to their improved sound as they continue to break in.
