Can you replace the outlet in this?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the receptacle can be replaced. The receptacle needs to be removed when making the electrical connection, see page 2, figures 3 and 4 in the installation guide: https://downloads.monoprice.com/files/manuals/12595_QIG_140714.pdf. I replaced the receptacle with a low clamping voltage surge suppression receptacle from Furhman/Panamax and it fits just fine, as would the MP item here without the electrical box: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=21657

How wide does the space between the wall studs need to be for this box to fit with the hidden storage cavity installed? How wide without?
I have double studs and also wonder whether this is configured so the expansion cavity can be installed in the top or bottom openings rather than the side opposite the duplex outlet.

BEST ANSWER: I can't say for sure, but I believe I used a product with the same size exterior (the big central square part that is visible outside your drywall) and it wasn't even half of the distance between my studs. I have standard 18" studs. That said, it looks like the full thing would easily fit in any standard stud situation if you can get it close to center.

Old Work Only
It looks like it will do the job, but its very unclear in the description that this should be classified as an old work box. The description says it features metal wings for installation directly to drywall, buts its not clear that this is the only option. Ive gutted my room and was hoping to rough-in the box, and now I have to wait for drywall to be installed. Not the end of the world, but I like these types of installations to be as clean as possible. I dont see a new work type box available on Monoprice.

Well Made
Well made unit, showed up with everything needed. Template fit, but it would have been nice if it had allowances for the extensions behind the wall. The outlet included was even manufactured by Hubble, a reputable brand.

did the trick. even allowed me to pug in a small surge suppressor which fit in the recess of this unit.
