What should the extruder and platform temperatures be?
Damien A
on Dec 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have had good luck with 200C - 210C. For platform, about 60C works well. Just don't remove the object until it cools. It seems like removing sooner would be better, but its not.

The lowest print temperature I have done with the extruder is 190C., and that did well. But the recommended extruder temperature is 210C.

I have been using 215 deg for the extruder and 60 deg for the platform on the Maker Select printer and that worked well for me.

195 deg F works great, it's laid down on a bed as warm as 30+ deg C

Is this safe to use for cups or other food related items? If so is it good for hot and/or cold stuff?

BEST ANSWER: PLA prints are not water-tight, so not food-safe. Since PLA prints at 55-65C, any food or liquid temp above that (130-149 F) is likely to delaminate the layers. This applies to all PLA, not just this specific filament.

PLA can be hand washed, but I would not recommend placing it the dishwasher. I have had plenty of water tight prints, but that aspect depends greatly on your own printer's performance.

This filament is not good grade, I would not use it for any food related items. PLA is based on corn starch so would not be completely unsafe but it would not hold up to long term use.

which filament type is the closest to hard plastic?
A shopper
on Jul 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: With 3D printing you have a lot of options. PLA is easy to print with but it's good for outside uses. ABS is closest to most plastic products but it's toxic and hard to print with. PETG (the same stuff as water bottles) can be used outside and gives the ease of PLA printing with the durability of PETG. You can also print with nylon if you need a durable pience.

New to 3d printing. About to buy the select mini. Should I buy this or the plus version of the filament?
joshua b
on Sep 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This will work great for you. The plus filament has tighter tolerances for the thickness of the filament, resulting in less variance from the 1.75mm standard, but your results should not be drastically effected. I've run both in several monoprice printers and it all works great.

Needed a higher temp than docs said
I've had real problems printing with this (stringiness, poor layer adhesion, subnominal flow rate) below 215C, despite the documentation specifying a max of 210. After some experimentation prints have become acceptable, but not great.

Excellent Filament!
Excellent filament! It prints smoothly and with a terrific finish. I purchased one spool of white and one of silver. Both are equally good. I can't wait to try the other colors!

Decent PLA but probably should be a budget price and not premium
Printed well after raising temp 15 degrees above my usual brands to 215 C. No binds on the reel but reel or winding made a few loops try to unwind from during loading the filament.

Mediocre quality
Poor layer-to-layer adhesion, compared to the other brands. You can completely peel off bottom layer from the print by hands. Color is not white, but white-light-grayish. Increased warping, causing printer to knock down the part from the bed.

Good filament, much more opaque than the Overture PLA I had before, but smells quite bad when printing, almost like ABS.

Great quality, but requires careful tuning
First time using this filament, and i like it. The filament has a very fine, smooth quality. I swear i see fewer layer lines in this filament than any others i have used, with other things being equal.
But it also seems to fracture more easily along layer lines than other filaments i have used, and it also seems to "string" or create cobweb effects more heavily than other filaments i have used. I've tried adjusting temperatures and print speeds in order to offset this, and haven't had any luck yet. But i will also buy more of this filament and keep trying to dial it in.
