How to Connect Speaker Wire: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Identify Positive and Negative Ends

With Connectors:
1. Positive end: Often red.
2. Negative end: Often black.
3. Connect the positive end to the positive terminal on the speaker and the amp/receiver.
4. Connect the negative end to the negative terminal on the speaker and the amp/receiver.
5. Repeat for each speaker.

Step 2: Prepare Bare Wires (If Not Using Connectors)

Strip the Wire:

Use a wire stripper to remove about 3/8-inch of insulation from each lead.

Twist the Wires:

Twist the bare wire strands tightly to prevent stray strands.
Ensure no stray strands are sticking out to avoid short circuits.

Types of Speaker Terminals

Spring Clips

How to Connect:

Press down on the clip.
Insert the speaker wire.
Release the clip to hold the wire in place.

Compatible Connectors:

Bare wire.
Pin connectors.
Note: Does not accept spade connectors, banana plugs, or dual banana plugs.

Binding Posts

How to Connect:

Unscrew the collar to reveal the hole.
Insert the bare wire or pin connector.
Screw the collar back down to secure the connection.

Using Banana Plugs:

Insert banana or dual banana plugs directly into the hole in the center of the binding post.
Tip: New banana plugs and speakers may require some pressure to insert due to a tight fit. This is normal and may require extra force the first time.

Using Spade Connectors:

Slide the spade connector around the binding post's collar.
Secure it by screwing the collar back down.
