Will this cable work in reverse? In my case, I have an eSATA enclosure that I want to connect to a SAS/SATA port in my server's host-swappable drive bays. The external enclosure will supply the HDD power, only need the SATA-eSATA connection for data transfer.

BEST ANSWER: The BIOS for your exact machines will determine if this will work. I was unable to get SAS to SATA conversions to be recognized on 3 year old ASUS motherboard machines using supposedly certified conversion adapting cables. Never mind SAS to e-SATA which has slightly more BIOS code to get it to function.

No because the SATA / Power connector will block the power port on your hard drive and you won't be able to connect it to the external enclosure's power source. You need a SATA to ESATA cable without the power connector.

Will the eSATAp plug on this cable fit properly and work properly in an eSATA port on a laptop, provided that the device that's plugged into the other end of the cable does NOT require 12v power? For example, I would like to use this cable to connect a 2.5 inch laptop drive to a laptop which has only an eSATA port (but not an eSATAp port). ???

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. You would be able to connect an eSATAp cable to an eSATA port. As long as the device does not require to be powered by port then it would work fine.

Better option than USB
If your machine has eSata+ port, this cable definitely performs better than the USB interface, although cable could be longer and more flexible. Longevity remains to be seen.

A quality cable for laptop eSATA + USB combo port to sata hard drive connections!
If you have a laptop that has an ESATA+USB combo port (also known as esatap, or powered esata) and you want a fast way to externally connect an internal 2.5" drive, then this is the cable for you! This cable well constructed and fits tightly in my esata/usb combo port and on the hard drive sata connector. Data transfers are fast & limited only by the hard drive platter to head interface. If you're a techy person that has internal 2.5" hard drives laying around and you want to quickly access this data without cracking open your laptop or computer, then this is the cable for you.

Great cable for laptop drives -- much faster than USB 2.0, with less overhead, even when SATA II is the interface.

Upgrading to SSD - way faster than USB 2.0 for Data Transfer
If you have one of those Laptops with an eSATAp port and the no USB 3.0 (i.e. just the older/slower USB 2.0 ports) then this is the path to rapid data transfer to SSDs or other HDDs.
Worked flawlessly and fast for image transfer to new SSD form me, way faster than trying to do the same thing withj USB 2.0. Plus it gives me the option to access any other SATA HDDs for backup etc.
High Quality cable with good shielding, exactly what I needed.

A winner for any laptop with eSata port.
Very practical and convenient.
PROS: Many eSata ports generate only 5V for the 15-pin Sata data plug, but that is enough for every SSD. If your laptop manufacturer is generating 12V, then this cable will also power up a 3.5" spinning hard drive.
CONS: None. The only reason it can't do a regular hard drive, is if the laptop manufacturer chose to produce only 5V.

Works Like a Charm
Had a laptop drive I needed the data off, and just plugged this cable on it, connected the other end to my laptop which has a serial port and was easily able to transfer files.
PROS: Fits right on a laptop hard drive, and connects to a SATA port.
CONS: None

for HDD/SSD (not optical drive)
4/5
PROS: Works! good length. good connectors.
CONS: Although this is probably clear to most purchasers, this cable is useful for plugging in a hard drive...not an optical drive (or a hard drive mounted in an optical bay caddy)
Perhaps just as clear, I learned this the slightly difficult way.

Ridiculously Easy!
Had to replace a small hard drive and I did not have Windows disks - researched and determined that I needed to 'clone' my old hard drive, with Win 7 intact - wasn't sure this was without problems, so I got this tool with some trepidation - but it turned out so easy it was laughable. Got a new WD hd and used the free Acronis software that WD provides - Not a thing to worry about.
PROS: Simple to use
Inexpensive
Will probably use again
CONS: ??? Let me think about it for awhile
