How do I increase the volume (for balancing purposes) when the length of the wire for one set of speakers is 200' vs. the other speaker wire at 50"? Is this accomplished with the "Matching Settings" impedance correction?

BEST ANSWER: The matching feature of this controller does not effect wire length. Volume difference between 50' & 200' is pretty minimal. If you need both sets to match you will need to have a separate run to the amp with volume controlls for each run.

Agree with volume difference. In fact wire resistance is a DC condition and would really only be seen by the total looking back impedance of your amplifier. It really has nothing to do with volume. Technically the difference in DCR of the wire at 150' is ~0.379 ohms for AWG14 wire and 0.603 ohms for AWG16 wire. The fancy answer here is for best amplifier balance, the wire lengths should be equal.
So, only concentrate on the impedance network of your speaker array. Example: On each amplifier run (200 or 50 feet doesn't matter) with 2 parallel 8ohm speakers on each amplifier run, the net impedance for each would be 4ohms. If the amplifier you are using is rated for a strict 8 ohm impedance only, the volume control for EACH channel would need to be set to the 2X position. The transformers inside the volume control balance the impedance load to the amplifier.
The only tricky thing I've found with the monoprice VC's is the input terminals are hooked to the amplifier. The output terminals are hooked to the speakers. This is displayed in the instructions but if reversed your sound will be diminished. Advise here is to double check the connections.

Ive only ever heard of keeping all wires the same length so you can most precisely match the stereo volume. This would unfortunately mean that you'd have 150' of cable wound up behind the close speaker. Perhaps a heavier gauge wire on the long run will help by reducing the resistance?

Add 150ft of slack to the shorter run. We do this with DC motors that need to turn at the same rate.

I have an older receiver amp with outputs for 2 sets of 2 speakers ea. No amp control for individual channel volume control. I have one set of speakers wired to go outside. They currently play at a lower volume than the set I have inside. I want to be able to make the outside speakers louder without changing the volume of the inside speakers, and be able to control from outside. Will this controller serve my goal?

I have to have the volume on my amp really high for this to work , almost maximum then I have to turn this volume controller almost to maximum too. Is this normal?

BEST ANSWER: That isn't normal. Make sure that your wiring is in phase. Also, make sure your jumpers are in the #1 position. You're losing a lot of power somewhere.

Speaker Volume Control
I have used this product before without issue. I ordered 4 units and 3 of the 4 were defective. The screws holding the unit to the box pulled completely through the holes when either removing the screws to attach wires or re-inserting screws after assembly. The units were then unusable. Customer service was fantastic in addressing my complaint. The issue is a manufacturing defect and should be addressed by them.

Faceplate screw holes failed
When I opened the controller by removing the faceplate screws, the landing for the screw head on the faceplate failed and broke off. It appears that the landing is a separate piece that is joined to the faceplate instead of part of the molding (probably a mold design limitation). I just used some much larger screws with a big head that the actual faceplate would hold. Too bad I had to 'rig' a brand new part, but it functionally works for sound.

Great Volume Control, BAD housing
The volume control works great but these are not ready for outdoor use unless it is inside of a shed or the garage. The plastic is fragile, cracks easily if you tighten the screws and then it leaks....

Worked well for almost 2yrs, then done.
I installed this in the summer of 2016. Worked very well through two summers. Was installed under my deck so not exposed to direct weather, but outdoor and would get wet. It wasn't perfect, as the adjustment levels were limited, but it did the trick by allowing me to adjust the volume without going in the house. Fast forward to yesterday when my receiver kept shutting down and saying "check speaker wires". I checked every connection inside and out before inspecting this control. Nothing looked off but there is a distinct "burnt plastic smell". I assume something inside is fried but couldn't see any obvious failures. I may buy another one as they are really cheap. Will need to consider a better quality option though.

Great value, Tight Fit, but functions as expected
Works as I expected. I mounted the housing with the opening at the bottom rather than the top as shown. There is not a lot of space in the housing with all the wires in place, but after a bit of time fiddling with the placement of all the wires I got the cover plate with volume knob to sit properly and tighten all four screws. Satisfied with my purchase, especially for the price.

Poor quality
I have purchased two of these in the last two years and have had the same issues with both. One channel (left on one unit, right on the other) doesn't send output signal. Pretty frustrating.
Other than basic non functioning issues, the build quality is rather poor. The screws to secure the faceplate have gaskets that don't hold and the actual water seal gasket around the perimeter is flimsy and ineffective.
Very disappointed in this volume controller.
