Do I need to purchase a mounting kit to install these in the ceiling of a 1-story home?
Jason J
on Mar 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No you don't the speaker has built in brackets that you tighten with a screw driver and locks it in to the Sheetrock. These speakers are large, make sure you have enough space between joists, the hole is about 12" wide. They call these 6.5" speakers but they are a lot bigger than the 8" I have installed in the kitchen. You need about 5-6" up into ceiling as well if your attic space is not open. There is a hook to install a cable to make sure it can't fall but it is very secure mounted through 1/2" Sheetrock.

No, these speakers have self-activated plastic tabs that swivel into position as you screw the pre-threaded screws in the speaker's chassis onto the edge of the hole you pre-cut (using the provided template) for the speaker.. These speakers are completely flush-mounted into the ceiling cavity so you need to be able to run speaker wire IN THE CEILING CAVITY from your amplifier to your ceiling speaker.

Nope, the speaker has tabs that swingout pinching it between the drywall. Use the included template to trace a pattern on the ceiling. Cut the pattern , connect your speaker wires and place the speaker in the hole. Tighten the tabs with a screwdriver and your set

No mounting kit required. However, be aware that these speakers are quite large and require a 12" diameter hole and 13" of clearance between ceiling joists to have room for the mounting tabs.

I bought two pair of these a few months ago. There were no back enclosures made specifically for this speaker at that time. Be aware they are quite large, 12" diameter mounting hole, plus another inch required for mounting tabs.

This speaker has a press fit speaker grill that holds firmly to the speaker. It also has a removal tool that comes with it to remove the grill from the speaker. I have not had problems with these grills. The finish is tight and true.

No, and is a bear to get off and on. I wrote in my review to use a metal spatula to position the tabs on the cover in the rim, then cover with a board and bang with fist to seat. This prevents point dents in the cover

Yes, I would say you should be just fine. Make sure you have some insulation batting to each side of speaker and above it. That way it doesn’t give off an echo type sound.

Do you connect these with banana plugs or directly connect the wires to the speaker - or can you do either one? I'm using 14 gauge wire if that matters.
A shopper
on Apr 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I used banana plugs but you can directly wire them up. They sound really nice as my rear surround speakers in a 7.1 system. You do have to make a very large hole in your ceiling to accommodate them though. Installation was pretty straight forward once the hole is the correct size, just be careful to not over tighten the screws holding the speaker in place.

If you are referring to banana plugs that you use to connect speakers to the back of amp or receiver, no you can't use those. You'll need the speaker pin plugs or use bare wire. I used speaker pin plugs with 14-gauge wire which worked great for me.

Monoprice Caliber Ceiling Speakers 6.5in Fiber 3-Way with Concentric Mid/Highs (pair)
Monoprice Alpha Ceiling Speaker Dual 5.25in Carbon Fiber Surround 2-way Vari-Angled (single)
BEST ANSWER: I have both of those the wall and the ceiling speakers. The ceiling speakers (6.5" PN#7605) should actually work pretty well in your situation. If installed with the tweeter at the top, it would probably face almost straight down. You just have to know these speakers are 13" in diameter, and are larger than they may appear in photos.

there is a switch inside the speaker, what is it for and what are the different settings for ?
A shopper
on Nov 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The switch is high frequency attenuation. It is to compensate for extra "lively" rooms they may be installed in. If your room has hard floors and lots of windows the high frequencies of your audio playback may be hyper extenuated. Without resorting to DSP in your system we can mellow the speakers sound with this switch.

When a speaker driver only has to deal with a limited range of frequencies, it's more efficient at doing so. In a three way speaker, each driver can be more specially designed to reproduce a narrower band of frequencies. That's how these speakers can cover a greater range (particularly in the lower register) and not lose clarity.

Would it be possible to install these speakers in a drop ceiling or should I be looking for smaller/lighter speakers for such a situation?
Ryan F
on May 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I installed mine in my basement ceiling between joists. Where they have a fair amount of weight to them I would recommend some support if they are installed any distance from ceiling supports or joists. As long as your drop ceiling is built well these speakers will do fine. I would also recommend insulation around the installation spot to keep sound from traveling through the ceiling which may create an echo or less desirable sound. My basement ceiling is insulated which helps keep the sound tight.

Why is the crossover for the tweeter so high (4.9kHz)? A 5.25” driver starts to beam at ~2500Hz. Crossing over almost a full octave of what’s ideal seems odd.

BEST ANSWER: Originally, the modelling said 3K as most of our tweeters are. As we rolled the tuning around and listened to what sounded best. This is what we landed on as the ideal tone and function.

Trying to decide between these 3 way Calibers and the 8" Alpha's for my ceiling Atmos/surround speakers. Have a vault so using either of these angled will help me reach the desired listening area... Also am going to use the M-215 sub as well with the in wall THX-465iW's for front. Which speakers for ceiling would be the best for this situation? Thanks!

I just installed 4 of these in the ceiling of a room with 8' ceiling and tile floor, one big window and drywall walls. what setting should I set the switch inside the speaker?

BEST ANSWER: I would leave it at 0, pending actually listening to it (and possibly tuning the output of whatever amp is driving them.) Leave the grilles off until this is done.
That switch is an attenuation switch for the tweeter.
I've installed a few sets of these, and have yet to find myself needing to move that switch from the 0 position.

Nice Speakers...Not so good covers
I recently installed these in my new construction house basement. I wanted the bigger speakers as the room has 10ft ceilings and a very wide open space. The speakers themself were easy to install, although I recommend two people to do the job. One to hold the speaker up while you secure it in place.
After the install which took minutes, the installation of the grill covers was a complete pain. You need to mark or look just right to see where the slots go in. As you put them in place, the fit is so tight I would have to use a flat screw driver to nudge the last one or two slots into place. This took 5 times as much time as actually installing the speakers.
You might want to opt for a smaller, easier to handle and install speaker

Work great! RCA input allowed me to adapt as AirPlay 2 enabled speakers!
We recently moved into a newly constructed house. The builder did a fantastic job, and went so far as to wire nearly every room for ceiling speakers. He installed a power outlet with each pair, and ran high quality speaker wire between the openings. In the upstairs, he also ran home-run wires to a closet for a more centralized system. Due to supply chain issues, he wasn't able to get the speakers he wanted, which turned out to be a good thing for me. I took the credit on the purchase price and designed the system myself. We are fairly entrenched in the Apple ecosystem at my house, and I wanted speakers that were AirPlay 2 compatible, so I could stream the same thing to multiple speakers throughout the house, or pick and choose.
Based on my research, the options for ceiling speakers with AirPlay capability is quite limited. A company in the UK makes a product that claims to be the only option in the world, but they cost over $600 a pair.
I found the SoundForm Connect Adapter that features AirPlay 2 compatibility, with headphone and digital optical audio outputs. The Monoprice Caliber speakers feature a RCA input in addition to built-in Bluetooth, which fit the bill perfectly.
I initially connected the SoundForm Connect to the speakers using a headphone jack to RCA adapter, but it seems that the headphone jack on the SoundForm in underpowered, and the max volume was rather low. I replaced this with a digital optical to RCA adapter, and the improvement was impressive.
I use a WiFi plug for all the components so that they don't have to be powered for the 98% of the time I am not using them.
I hope someone finds this useful.

Could use a little better high end detail
They could use a more dynamic Tweeter. I run a 9.2 with these ultimately rebuilding the LCR channels. Interestingly, the shell looks MP was considering a 1.125" Tweeter. As there is a space marked with mount screw location. I put in a Dayton transducer here with 2uF cap in series with the positive terminal. That is the icing on the cake. I totally rebuilt the speaker however including crossovers. Sorry Monoprice...
