Are these meant to be used in a vertical orientation, or 'pointed at' the sound source?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: These are end address microphones. The cardioid pattern capsules would be most sensitive along the long axis of the mic, not coming from the side. (The term for that type is "side address.") The omni capsules would be more or less equally sensitive from every direction.

Pointed at the sound source. (With the omni capsule it wouldn't matter.) I have used these for sound reinforcement for instruments like harp, hammer dulcimer, and violin.. Considering the affordable price, these mics exceeded my expectations.

Depends on your application.
I use them to record accoustic guitar in an 'X' patern so that is a horizontal orientation.
You can also usethem on drums in a vertical orientation for overheads.

These microphones come with interchangeable capsules.. the omnidirectional capsules can be used in a vertical orientation and the unidirectional ones should be pointed at the sound source.

The cardioid pattern capsules should be pointed at the source, but in theory with the omnis it shouldn't matter, since they pick up sound from all directions.

Are these mics effective for small stage performances?
A shopper
on Jul 20, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is yes. I used a pair of these to reinforce the sound of a piano in a church setting. As well as for recording the same. They have not been used for much else. I like the quality of the product. For vocals I would lean towards Product # 600058 or whatever replaced it, perhaps the DM20.

The mics have two capsules with different patterns. This could be helpful depending on your use. The mics are phantom powered so they create a good output signal. They seem to be very sensitive. I have used them with a quartet with acoustic guitar. I have been very pleased with their performance

Yes-depending on your application. I'm using them as ambient mics for a band that uses in ear monitors. I've also used them as drum overheads and to mic a string section. I would say they are roughly comparable to Shure KSM 137.

Yes. They have a narrow peak at 7 kHz and and a bright sound that you might be able to equalize out. Otherwise, they are very good mics, especially for the price.

They are a bit harsh. They are OK for small rigs, etc - dont expect them to sound like SM81 or even Behringer C2/4.

What are the differences of each type of capsules (circle and oblong shape) and purposes?
A shopper
on Jan 6, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Circle: omnidirectional, picks up sound in all directions equally. Heart-shape: cardioid, more sensitivity in the direction the mic is pointing towards.
Google "cardioid polar pattern" and "omnidirectional polar pattern." A full answer would be book-length.

The circle is for omni, meaning the microphone will pick up sound from all directions. The oblong shape is for a cardioid pickup pattern, which picks up sound in the direction the mic is pointed but rejects sound from the rear of the microphone. Having interchangeable capsules makes these microphones very versatile because they can be used for more applications.

Circle means its Omnidirectional, and The oblong shape means its cardioid. A very basic description - Omnidirectional should pick up from all directions, and Cardioid picks up directionally what is in front of it the most and then less on the sides, and almost nothing from behind.

circle is omni, the other shape is called cardioid and refers to the polar pattern of the same name and shape.
The polar pattern is off the end of the mic. Cardioid attenuates sound pick up from behind, while omni- picks up all the way around.

Basically, the circle shape indicates the microphone will pick up from all directions equally. The oblong shape indicates the microphone is directional and will pick up only from the front.

Are these electrets?
Peter J
on Jan 5, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Electret microphone capsules are inherently "condenser" microphones. The diaphragm assembly is permanently polarized with a chemical material as part of their construction. The 48 volt phantom power supply simply provides power for the impedance conversion of the condenser capacitance and very high impedance value to a low impedance voltage source output. A concern with some electrets is that high temperature exposure will gradually reduce the output levels of this type of microphone over time. Otherwise, if properly designed they can be quite impressive as the benchmark DPA 4000 microphone series has proved.

Without even looking I'm sure these are electret "condenser" mics. You cannot build a true condenser for that price.

Where is the user manual for this microphone that includes full specifications like frequency response?

BEST ANSWER: Hi there - my name is Philippe, and I recently purchased a pair...they came in a black case, and the external box the case came in has all the information on the bottom. If you threw away the box, maybe you can call customer service, and see if they can make a screenshot/photocopy...the P/N (part number is 625907. I hope this helps. I wish the pair would come with a little booklet - as you are "suggesting." I'm going to take a pic on my phone, and then print it, and put the paper in my case with the mics. I haven't yet tried the mics, but I'll bet they're pretty great!

Punch above their weight!
I own a recording studio and these punch well above their weight. Pretty much just live as room mics, picking up drum ambience then getting smashed by compression / saturation. They were solid on acoustic plucked instruments as well, if not a little bright. Solid little mics!

Deserves nothing less than 5 stars
I've had them for a couple years. The quality on these things are great! I use them for instruments and drums. I usually prefer these over my PVM 480s and cost much less. They can make a professional sounding recording. The fact they can include the case and all the gear as well as 2 quality mics. You can't afford not to get these if you have a music studio.

RF interference issues
These sound great but I've found they are particularly susceptible to RF interference. I've tried different interfaces and cables and through process of elimination determined it's something in the build of the mic. Using any other mic in my studio solves the issue. I like the mics a lot but unfortunately it looks like I'll have to use them for field recording only. Depending on where you record they might work great.

A very good value: flexible and great sound.
These mics have sounded exceptionally good on everything I have tried them with - almost always using the cardioid capsules.
Acoustic guitar. Conga drum. Vocals. Sax.
I've never been disappointed by these - very detailed but no harshness.
Like a lot of Monoprice gear, these mics punch WAY above their weight class. Excellent value.

More foam please...
I'm no Steve Albini, but these mics do the job. One issue; the foam in the case isn't thick enough to hold the mic, extra capsules, and mic holders in place, so one of my omni capsules arrived with a dent and wouldn't screw onto the mic body. Ye olde "save a penny, cost a dollar".
