why is it called a pedal tuner? Is this a simple plug in type or do I need some pedal?

BEST ANSWER: It is a pedal because you can put it on the floor, plug your instrument in to it then use the output to connect to your amp or PA. By clicking the button you mute the output so your audience doesn't hear you tuning.

You have two plugs, one goes into your tuner from the guitar. That other goes from the tuner to the amp. It's simple. All that you do is press the footswitch and the guitar's signal is stopped from going to the amp (until you press the switch again.) During this time, with the guitar muted you tune your guitar using the digital readout on the pedal. To use this tuner, which I and others refer to as a pedal, you just need a couple of 1/4" plug guitar cables, and the tuner pedal. It's easy. It works well.

You do not need a pedal. A "pedal" is a generic term for any guitar device that is constructed so it can be turned on or off using your foot. In this case, the device has a button that can be stepped on to activate or de-activate the device. It is not necessary to use your foot. I keep my pedal tuner on a desk and use a finger to press the on/off button. You do need a cable into the pedal from your guitar and, if you want the guitar's output to go to an amp, a cable from the pedal to the amp.

Effects pedals are used to create tone effects for guitar and bass prior to feeding into a mixer or amplifier usually in an array on the floor in front of the performer. This item does not create any effects, but is used to tune the instrument. It is activated by stepping on the button, hence ‘tuning pedal.’ No special equipment is needed except for a 9v charger, which comes with it and a second short cable to run from the tuner to the next effect pedal or the amplifier. Good luck.

It's a pedal because you would operate it with your foot. This would typically sit on the floor and can connect in with other floor pedals such as distortion, reverb, delay. etc and use your foot to turn the devices on/off. This is a stand-alone unit and does not require any other parts to work accept a batter (it might even come with one). I use this exact tuner and it works perfect for over 1 year now. The large display is awesome! I'd buy another when the time comes!

This pedal device accepts an instrument source (e.g. guitar via 1/4” mono jack) and displays the pitch (e.g. A, B, ..., G with sharps or flats). You can use this device to tune your instrument. The pedal device also outputs the input signal, unaltered, so that you can easily connect to an amplifier, mixing board, etc... the device is a ‘pedal’ because it typically sits on the floor and is activated or disabled with your foot.

This isn’t a tuner pedal. It’s designed to sit on your pedal board between guitar and amp. You can choose how you use it, either it’s always on and shows your tuning, or you can select the bypass mode which cuts the guitar signal so you can tune silently. It’s Pretty straightforward, and it works well.

This is called a pedal tuner because you operate it with your foot. Just put a battery in it, plug in your guitar or bass and step on the switch to see if it is in the on or off position. The rest is automatic. We are really enjoying our pedal and have not seen a better price for this type of pedal.

It is a pedal. You plug your guitar into it, and come out of it to your amp or other pedals. You can leave it plugged in because when you step on the switch it toggles from tuning to bypass mode. Tuning mode is visual only, as it mutes the output signal.

So this is the pedal. All you do is connect it to your guitar and/or amp. This pedal is designed to be used with more pedals and an amp but I believe you can tune your guitar without any of that if you connect it directly.

The tuner is the pedal itself. In other words, it's an automatic tuner in the form of an effects pedal. You have to plug into it's input and stomp on it to turn it on.

Does this happen to have a strobe tuning mode?

BEST ANSWER: No, it doesn't have a strobe tuning mode. If you want true strobe tuning you have to shell out the $100+ that they cost. What you expect for $20???? I have 3 basses and the MonoPrice does , so far, excellent work at keeping them tuned to standard. I have a Fender tuner that doesn't come close to my MonoPrice.

This pedal does not implement strobe style tuning. This pedal does a great job for the price. Most extremely accurate strobe tuners, like Peterson Vss-c Stomp pedal) go for around $175. Like I said, for the price, this inline pedal tuner is hard to beat and works well.

It does not. It's just a standard a tuner that lights up red for sharp/flat and green in the center for in tune. It is quite responsive, though. In my set up, it's always on and other players can often see my melody notes by looking at the tuner.

Thanks for the clarification. It can be found for well under $100, which I don't think is outrageous, but just thought I'd ask, because it seems they are copping the look of the Korg Pitchblack, which has strobe, and it shouldn't be that hard to add that feature as well.
The Korg and similar are more of a "lite" strobe tuner vs a professional full featured one (ex. Peterson 490) which are much more expensive. It all depends on your needs. I'm happy with the monoprice- fast, accurate, easy to see, sturdy, inexpensive, better than any clip on tuner I've tried.

Is the case plastic or metal?

BEST ANSWER: The case is metal. It's very sturdy looking, and has a good sized digital display (You can see it easily from standing above it.) I've used mine many times. It works well. I wouldn't be without it. This is one of the most practicle things that you can have, as a gigging musician. I use it as a mute button, too, when I want to unplug, re plug in my guitar without a big buzzing noise (before the plug seats itself.) I highly recommend this pedal.

Can I run 2 guitars through this tuner, where I could switch back and forth?

BEST ANSWER: No. The true bypass signal is always on. The regular output cuts the signal off while tuning. While you could run signal to two amps (with the amp connected to bypass always on, even while tuning), but there is no true switching function. You want a A/B/Y switch for that.

No. Some A/B switches allow you to use them “backwards” - ie two inputs to one output rather than one input to 2 outputs. If you put one in the chain before the tuner you could probably accomplish what you want, but that is an extra expense.

Can both outputs be used simultaneously?
A shopper
on Jan 6, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Aside from the 9V power supply port and the guitar "IN" port, there's a "BYPASS" and a "OUTPUT" port. The Bypass always lets the signal through. The Output depnds on the Tuner function; when the tuner is On, no signal comes through the Output; when the tuner is Off, signal does come through the Output. Again, signal always comes through the Bypass, independent of the tuner.

After watching several videos, it appears to me that the bottom left output (bypass) let's the signal through 100% of the time whether or not the pedal has been activated as a tuner (no visual, just black screen when off - tuning is visible when on). The top output mute's the signal when the tuner is activated (clicked on = silent tuning).

Does this pedal double as a splitter if you both the bypass out and the switched output (set on)?
A shopper
on Aug 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The answer is actually yes. On my bass board, I have this after my wireless receiver, so effectively first in the chain. I built a simple A/B switch and put it 2nd to last in the chain (before my Monoprice DI) to switch from dirty to clean. The dirty input is fed from my effects loop, which comes from the main output, and the clean input is fed from the bypass out of this pedal. So when I have more than one effect going, and want to immediately switch to a clean sound, I can get that sound out of the "bypass out" from this pedal.

The bypass always allows signal to pass through all the time. The Output only passes signal when the pedal is turned off. You can use the output to tune silently. You can also use this to split your signal into two. One (bypass) Two (output). The catch is that the output will stop allowing signal through when the pedal is on. So if you have no need to have the pedal on while performing then Yes is does split the signal.

Why would you want to tune to 432hz? That is just conspiracy theorist propaganda . Don't fall into that trap. Just tune to 440 and detune a 1/2 step lower if you want the sound of less tight strings. There is no "432hz standard."

I tested the current draw using a Uni-T UT61E multimeter using a Duracell 9V alkaline battery. While actually tuning a guitar, my meter read a current draw of about 38mA. While in bypass mode (i.e standby mode) I read a current draw of .03 mA. Consider these numbers, a quality 9V Alkaline battery should last a very long time.

I believe the site has it listed somewhere and it's in the manual. I don't have mine handy but IIRC it's pretty low, under 50 mA I think?

Yes please do. I found the green tube overdrive at Wally online and grabbed it for $20. Saw three at the will call store last June for $29 (delay, compressor and OD) and I didn't know anything about them so waited and when I came back they were gone. Should have snatched them up.

I don’t know but I wish they would bring them back. I bought pretty much one of each of them while they were available, they are a great value. Their tube screamer knockoff is virtually identical to the Ibanez. I do wish Monoprice would expand their musical stuff.

This, like most tuners is very precise when it comes to A440. Rigid tuning like this can sound a bit off for certain guitar chord intervals. You can find lots of videos online to sweeten your tuning. Guitar tuners that can automatically be set for sweetened tunings, like the Peterson , Stobo stomp cost $199.00. Even the Peterson clip-on version with sweetened tunings cost $59.99. The mono tunier is effective and inexpensive at $19.99. Just watch the videos and learn how to temper your tuning yourself with a standard tuner if you want a cost effective solution..

Will this work to tune an electric autoharp? Not a harp... an autoharp. It has 36 strings.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, this fully chromatic will tune most instruments that can plug audio from a 1/4" connector. For best results you may have to adjust the volume to ensue you are getting enough signal but not distorting the inout of the tuner. Some deep bass frequencies are out of range and may not register.

Is it buffered?
A shopper
on Apr 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No. This is not buffered. It is true bypass. It has two outputs. One is always bypass and the other cuts the signal when the pedal is on. I use it as a signal splitter. The always bypass goes to my amp and the other to my RockSmith cable. It allows me to play rocksmith but monitor my signal through my amp and pedals.

Does this tuner pedal has Input buffer?
A shopper
on Nov 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No. It’s a little noisy. One of my pedals has a dry out and just have it connected to that so the signal stops there with the pedal. That’s probably the only application I’d recommend. It also doesn’t work with a dedicated tuner output if your amp has one.

Which of the outputs -- the "output" or the "bypass" should be used to go to a direct box? My Kustom bass amp cannot go to a direct box because then it won't function as my monitor. So I need to put one output to the amp and the other to the direct box so my bass can be mixed in the church sound system. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: If I recall correctly, "bypass" mutes when you have the pedal on (tuning mode), while "output" is an always on "through". When the pedal is off (no lights on) (regular mode) both outputs have audio.
So the question is, do you want the audio of you tuning going through your amp only, or the PA only?

The manual says you have to unplug it completely for it not to draw power, and so far I've found that to be true. I've tried connecting inline with a kill switch pedal, and even with the kill switch on, it still lights up, so I'm assuming that if I turn it "off" it's still drawing power, I guess through the kill switch. While I understand that this is completely lazy, I don't want to unplug it every time, and I don't want my guitar electronics to be powered all of the time. Has anyone else with more experience run into this, and what do you recommend?

It works
I did not notice any significant change in signal when used, but I also did not have a chance to use it within a complicated signal chain, but only when feeding into a modeling amp so YMMV

This Pedal Is Great.
I use this pedal everytime I go out and gig. It's the first thing in line with my guitar (follwed by an EQ pedal, and a looper.) This little pedal makes tuning easy. You don't have to get out a tuner. Just step on the pedal, the amp goes quiet (when you step on the switch), you tune up, then press the pedal again to go back to the amp with the guitar's signal. I also use it when I go on break. I don't want my guitar sitting there prone to feedback, so I just press the tuner pedal and it disconnects the guitar's signal from the amp. I like this pedal so well, I bought two of them. The one thing that I will say, like any display, if you get it in direct sunlight, it can be a bit difficult to see, but that's true of any display (the red ones) on any product. So, it's not unique to this pedal. This is a great pedal.

Great for the price
Course resolution compared to other tuners I've used, so "creeping up" to tuned condition not like what I'm used to - but when hit, it agrees with the other hardware and app tuners I tried. Oddly, there seems to be a bit of a delay when using it with my Monoprice Acoustic-Electric (Product ID: 610830). Perhaps it takes it a while to find the fundamental note within the harmonics an acoustic generates? Does work though. As others have noted, it has a big, bright display & being able to tune without the signal going to the amp, when kicked in, is my preference. Haven't used the bypass output, as I want it muted while tuning, but it's nice to have the option. All in all, for $26.99 & free shipping - really hard to beat.
