California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar - Black

You know it when you hear it. That distinctive California Classic sound made famous by artists like Dick Dale, David Gilmour, and Ritchie Blackmore. Whether it is the surf, blues, psychedelic rock, country, or classic hard rock, this California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice is the perfect axe for your daily practice and performance needs.

This full-sized, 22-fret guitar features a double-cutaway body made of basswood, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses three single-coil pickups in the bridge, middle, and neck positions. A five-position selector switch allows you to use each of the three pickups individually, while the 2 and 4 positions combine the neck and bridge pups with the middle one for that distinctive "quack" sound. A tremolo/whammy bar is included for note bending.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune.

    Incredible Value!
Own several name brand guitars. Can not beat the cost for value of this Monoprice guitar.Considering purchasing additional Monoprice guitars.

    Amazing value for the price
This was a $90 guitar reduced on sale to $75 and I used a 15% coupon. So I got it for $60 actually it would still have been a bargain at $90. Squier type axe really, really well set up, and no blemishes of any kind. It doesn't compare to my Carvin neck throughs, but then it shouldn't have to . If you're looking for a good beginner guitar, then this is for you. I'm not a beginner but needed something to practice on, and for that it's perfect too. Unlike some reviewers, I would not start getting busy by changing the electronics or whatever take it for what it is and you'll be well pleased. I'm reviewing this on that basis really not fair to put this up against expensive guitars and to ding it for not measuring up.

PROS: Well constructed, beautifully set up. Comes with serviceable gig bag. Astonishingly well priced. For a beginner (or practice) guitar it really is unbeatable.

CONS: Comes strung with 9's (I think). Nothing wrong with that, but they don't seem to be of very good quality - my top string broke almost immediately. Recommend you re-string it on arrival. Slightly buzzy on the sixth string, intonation ok but not perfect, stays in tune only reasonably well.

This is an excellent basic guitar. For a basic studio riff, or practice guitar that you're not concerned about leaving in the office, car or at a friend's house, taking to the beach, etc., I think it's great. I've been quite impressed with the general build quality and components. It just works. The stock strings were scratchy on the frets, but that seemed to disappear when I put a new set on. br brMore experienced players using sophisticated playing techniques may notice some quirks. At first I felt the fingerboard was too flat, but I've gotten used to it. It feels good and works well overall. br brOne of the reasons I bought this guitar was so that I could mess around with it, practice setups and modifications, etc. I wouldn't want to do that kind of messing around with an expensive guitar. This is and will continue to be great for those kinds of projects. For the first time, I did truss rod, bridge saddle, and intonation adjustments, and I'm thinking about trying pickup, tuner, and neck changes. It doesn't *need* those things, but they could be upgraded. No flaws that make this guitar unplayable, and if you're using effects and a decent amp, I wouldn't even worry about the pickups, which are fine. The more time I spend with it, the more I personalize it with various mods and relic-ing techniques (i.e., beating it up a bit), I'm finding the sound opening up and I'm getting used to the fingerboard radius, and it's taking what I'm throwing its way. And ultimately that may be the nature of a guitar like this. Whereas a insert famous brand name and high end model here may come stock with its own "magic", this guitar is the blank slate for whatever magic you are willing and able to put into it. That's not necessarily a bad thing and I am glad to have this as part of my collection.

PROS: Low cost, minimal commitment easy to feel comfortable with practicing mods and setup. No worries about loss of damage. Perfectly good for practice. Comfortable to play like most S-style guitars. Not a toy.

CONS: Lacks impressive brand name. Components not the highest quality, but they do the job. May need some setting up or mods to make it feel great (like many guitars).

Great Guitar Very Happy With It
This is the 1st review I've ever bothered to write for anything. I couldn't be happier with this guitar. I'm an intermediate player. I used to have an american strat. I loved that guitar but I had to sell it. I picked up an Epiphone "SG" Special off craigslist with an amp for $99. It was terrible! I sold it for what I paid and bought this and a Honeytone amp for the same price. I couldn't be happier with this swap.

The action, feel and look all surpass it's price by far. It's easy to play. The knobs are nice and tight, switch is clicky. The input for the cord, solid. The finish looks great. I was concerned about the tuners due to other reviews but these are great so far. It stays in tune very well. Even the strings are fine. I had another set ready to go but I'll play it with these until they're worn. If you're thinking about it, stop thinking and go for it. I can't give a really true assessment of the pups but they play well through the Honeytone and it's a great set up on a budget. I'm very happy I will never sell this guitar! I may upgrade the pups in time. I would every confidence in buying any of the other models based on this purchase.

    Good luck!

    Nice, but......
Let me preface this by saying I've been playing guitar for less than a year, so there is a good chance I don't know what I'm talking about. I bought this to replace a gift guitar that was really, just really crappy. My friend bought an introductory Ibanez at about the same time. This one plays just as well as his, and even has a better feel in my hands - more like a real guitar and not some toy.

The finish really is beautiful - I got the black and it just looks sexy. (Except for the name on the head stock. I love you Monoprice, but really?)

The shipping was super fast - California to Georgia in about 4 business days. Nice! Packaging was nice, too.

The only real complaint I have so far is some really annoying neck buzz on the low E string - frets 1-3. There is some on A as well, but not as bad. Like I said, I don't know much about guitars, so maybe this is something that can be easily adjusted. I'll keep fiddling.

Overall, much improvement over what I had. I recommend for anyone wanting to learn on something that looks really nice and plays well (other than aforementioned buzz.) If you're not ready to fork over a bunch of cash for someone new (including yourself) but still want a quality guitar, I recommend.

    PROS: Beautiful.

    Great price.

    Fast shipping (typical Monoprice)

    Light weight

    Plays well

CONS: Really bad neck buzz on low E - especially frets 1-3

    frets are a little prickly

This is a great guitar. It is set up perfectly, the attention to detail is amazing, the pups sound great....

It's the one I keep reaching for. These will make great Christmas presents!

PROS: Excellent build quality and finish. Neck feels just right. Good balance. Sounds great

    CONS: None!

    MonoPrice has a winner
Beautiful guitar, plays as good as any strat I have ever picked up, very fast action with precision intonation all over the fretboard, stays in tune after playing hours of heavy hammering on the guitar.
Neck feels good as does all the hardware, sounds like a full priced strat after putting some DR 10's on the guitar.
Every part I have looked up from a strat MIM will fit on this guitar, Hmmmm?
If you are looking for a good playing guitar then you have found it right here on MonoPrice this is a outstanding piece of musical equipment and by the way the neck feels fantastic and has blazing fast action right out of the box without not even the slightest fret buzz (Thanks, Roger Gresco) who would have thought all this for under $90, for all you skeptics out there who feel you have to pay a small fortune for a great sounding quality built instrument you might better rethink this one and give it a shot you won't be sorry.
How are you doing this MonoPrice? Who are you getting to build these guitars? they a top notch.
By the way I bought this "California Classic" and the "Route 66" and both are equally as good in their own distinctive ways.
For those of you on the fence come on over you will not regret this purchase, if you can't tell I am mind boggled in how in the world MonoPrice can produce, sell and make a profit on such a nice guitar this is no el cheapo like you find on auction sites and pawn shops trust me I know.

PROS: Beautiful Guitar(Finish)not a bad spot nowhere on the guitar, Quality build, parts and sound.
These guitars have it all, I have some very expensive guitars and equipment and this guitar is no slouch or sacrifice to any of my other instruments.
    Beautiful craftsmanship.
Basswood sounds brillent with great tones and undertones.
    Maple Neck and Rosewood Fretboard.
    Triple pick-guard

CONS: Strings are not the best and I will replace the Nut with a Tusq®.
    Included pick sucks

PROS: Great sound for the price. I purchased this as a starter guitar for my kids and myself to learn on.

    Impressive
Others have stated, how can they do this for $90? I agree with the sentiment, hard to imagine this quality for under $100. I honestly could imagine this guitar at $250 or more. The pickups sound decent if a bit thin but you can find a cheap used Lce Sensor or similar for $30-40. Strings need replacing immediately and have a decent pick before you play, the pick it comes with is a throw-away (it grabs the string and is not playable).

    You can't go wrong here.

PROS: Solid construction, good tone, better than average playability

CONS: Noisy pickups, a little thin, stock strings are cheap

Great California special strat style guitar
Very good guitar! Better than a Squier bullet and equal to or greater than a Squier Affinity. First thing I did was check intonation and its right on. It plays well, sounds good and a great value foir the money.
