are the grills and frame on these speakers paintable? I need black speakers and mono price doesn’t seem to offer black.
Dominick M
on Jul 24, 2021
I installed them in a white ceiling, however, I would think they are paintable with a few precautions. If you want to use a rattle can pick a paint like Krylon Fusion that is designed to adhere to plastic. The grIlls are removable so painting them is easy, painting the surrounds will require masking the speaker cones.

Yep, I painted the grills on the ones I put in my last house (flat black, btw). Make sure to spray and not brush, otherwise you might clog the holes in the grill. The frame is fine to brush though.

I used 16 gauge for a 30 foot length driven by a 20 watt / ch. amp which I sometimes play fairly loud (power used and wire length are the factors at play). IMHO 18 may be fine also for such a distance or less.

I used 16 AWG wire. I had a short distance for the speakers. If you have a longer run, say 40 or 50 feet you might use 14 gauge wire.

If you have batt style insulation, install like normal. The speaker will be fine touching it. If you have blown-in insulation, cut a big piece of batt insulation and slid the batt insulation up in the hole right when you finish cutting. It will hold up the blown-in insulation and keep it from getting in your speaker.

Blown in insulation can be placed directly against the back of the speaker. I cannot recall exactly, but the speaker back might have come with a polypropylene cover to go into the ceiling to keep insulation off the speaker cone. Either way, I do not see it would be a problem to have insulation against the speaker back.

I wouldn't recommend blown in insulation on top of them without some type of barrier. I have installed mine up against roll type insulation, but the electronics are exposed, so blown in would coat the electronics, which probably isn't the best idea.

It would probably be best to keep the insulation off of the cone. See one of the other questions/answers for how someone made a cover using popcorn bowls and pipe. This was not a concern for me because I had insulation batts installed.

What do these weigh each wondering if I have to reinforce drop ceiling?

If you have an unconventional drop ceiling or are unsure, we would recommend contacting a professional installer for your specific application. We also recommend paring this speaker with our drop ceiling installation kit product # 6033.

Just as an estimate from holding these I would say they weigh around 8 lbs. They work great for drywall, but I don't think I would put them in a drop ceiling. The clamps are made to squeeze the drywall to hold the speaker in there, I'm afraid they would go right through drop ceiling material.

Most drop ceilings material will support the weight with no problem. However, you can cut out some thick cardboard or thin lumber to spread the load over a bigger footprint.

Monoprice Caliber In-Ceiling Speakers, 8in Fiber 2-Way with 15° Angled Drivers (pair)
BEST ANSWER: Both speakers will Mount flush in the ceiling, however the speakers that have a 15 degree offset will allow you to better construct a listening focal point and sound stage. If used in a surround sound application where all or most speakers are in ceiling, you can aim the speaker to your listening position to create a sweet spot for the sound, whereas the only adjustment on the other speakers is the tweeter angle.

The angled set will allow one to 'aim' the driver towards the listening position. Mine work great, I am using them for side surround speakers and the angle allows me to point towards my couch, you can hreally hear the difference (I have both types of speakers). They do require a much larger hole in your ceiling however so make sure they will fit before you buy.

BEST ANSWER: they should be fine. I have them in the ceiling of my Screened porch and while they wouldn't get the same level of moisture that occurs with steam from a shower they are out in the humidity of VA weather and are standing up just fine. The cone and foam are all poly product anyway so they are resistant to moisture. IN time you may see a little rust on the screen but if you install them properly and don't ding up the screens exposing any bare metal they should last for quite some time with no issues.

For the installation, how thick of material can the speaker clamp to? I have done it on 1/2 drywall before but want to use outside in my soffit and it is an inch and a quarter thick
George S
on Jan 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I installed in my ceiling through 3/4 thick material. 1 1/4 inches is pushing the edge of the speaker clamping limits. However, if the limit of the speaker built in clamps do not accommodate the thickness you can remove the screw tabs and put screws into your 1 1/4 material. Or if material will not hold screws you can obtain longer screws of the same size (guage/thickness) and place the clamps onto these.

You will have to measure the maximum clamping distance on the speaker. You can also make a ring, mount the ring to the soffit then mount the speaker to the ring. Also, you will need to verify that they are rated for exterior use. For my patio, i purchased MP outdoor speakers. Consider the speaker projection as well, it will be pointing down to the ground and not into the landscape. I get that they are not as clean as a wall or ceiling mount but if there is a market for them then lets push MP to develop!

The switch is for ohms, this does not effect bass but rather the power resistance with your receiver. Make sure you match this properly or you'll burn up your head unit.

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your interest in these ceiling speakers. These , as all of our installed speakers, work great as stereo pairs or as single units. For mono operation it is recommended that you have mono capabilities on your amplifiers. Many recordings use the "stereo" effect heavily, many Jimi Hendrix recordings have his vocal in the right side and the guitar in the left. As a paging system you'll have no worries.

Certainly they will work, but the bigger question is, for the room where you will only have one, are you going to wire them as MONO, since I'm sure the source is in STEREO? Mono is fine, but you would need to get a stereo to mono adaptor placed before the amp or sound source. Follow the wiring diagram that comes with that.

If you do not have the use of your first finger, it's also possible to use the second finger and thumb. In any case, you just gently point it where you want it to go, and it doesn't put up much of a fight.

"With over 100,000 pairs sold worldwide, our Caliber™ Series speakers speak for themselves. This new lineup gives them a slim and sleek design update, while maintaining all the classic features and incredible sound of the originals. The aramid fiber and titanium silk drivers return for that light, rigid, yet powerful and clean sound reproduction. The refined bezels can still be painted or installed as is to fit perfectly blend into any home or office setting, yet they are still compatible with our current Caliber accessories, like the Rough-in Brackets, ABS Back Cans, and Installation Kits. In short, the Calibers got a face lift and they've never looked or sounded better."

I have a 9.8" cutout hole already from my Klipsch 3800-ii's that I moved into my theatre room. I am now looking to put a less expensive set in these existing cutouts. Would these speakers work with those dimensions? Are the retaining clips long enough to make up the .2" additional width?

I got up on a chair and measured to the outside edges of the outer ring and it's eleven inches, so my guess is you should be good. you could glue a paint stick or something on the side edge if need be on the backside of the drywall

This or Caliber series speakers?
If my rooms have two speakers in the ceiling, meaning I don't need to run a single speaker in stereo, why would I choose this versus the Caliber series - 4103 or 4104 for instance? Which is the better option if I am going to have two speakers in the room already?
thanks

If I want to run just 1 speaker in the Laundry room would I be able to pickup both channels or would I just have a Left or a Right?
New User U
on Oct 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You would run one speaker cable (2 wires - typically black and a red or one wire with a stripe and the other without) you would connect it to the speaker like normal, one wire to the (+) and one to the (-). At the receiver you would connect the (-) to the Left outputs (-) and then the (+) to the Right outputs (+). This would be considered Mono and you would hear both Left and Right channels.

I assume your amp will support a 4Ω load. The Aria sub has 2 inputs, left & right. Both are 8Ω. The 4104 are also 8Ω. You can run 1x 4104 and one side of the sub in parallel, run the other 4104 to the other side of the Aria sub. Your amp will see a 4Ω load on each channel. Wiring speaker in series is generally a bad idea. The wiring is messy and lose a lot of power, this config will show as a 16Ω load to the amp cutting the power at least in half and then splitting that in half to the 2 speakers.
The satellite output from the sub will support up to an 8Ω load, the 3" satellites are 16Ω. The satellite load will not effect your amp so you get full power to the sub.
If you run the 4104 first they will see full range signal. If you run them from the satellite our of the sub they will only see 250Hz and above.

Audio quality could be better
If you plan on using these to play music in a room, you will definitely notice these speakers leave some quality to be desired.. After testing them with a reference mic, a lot of EQ and filtering was required to get these speakers into a passable response (even still they could have been better). Overall, the base extension is very weak and the highs roll off too fast. Out of the box they have a muddy, boomy mid-range only response. I used a professional grade Crown CDi 1000 amplifier for my testing (I highly recommend ordering refurbished on eBay if you are doing a whole home install. They do 2-8 ohm and 70V loads and have a 7 band parametric EQs per channel built in).
They will probably work fine for surround/atoms speakers which don't play continuous, critically listened to content.
Also be very gentle with the mounting mechanism and use a hand screw driver to snug up the speakers. One of the screws snapped (yes, the metal part, not the plastic part!) on one of the four speakers I ordered. It still held in fine with 3 wings (no rattling).

I purchased these to replace a 15 year old pair that originally cost several times that of the calipers. They sound much better than I expected and we're easily installed.

Clear and Crisp
Overall a nice sounding speaker. Be nice if it had a little more bass sound. I used them in the ceiling of my shop. I also used the ABS enclosure through Monoprice. The Enclosures made the installation a little trickier because the wire stripping wasn't adaquite. The sound on the speakers is very crisp and clear, just lacking a little bass. Mid's and High are great. I would definitely recommend the enclosures for in-ceiling because you can loose a lot of sound on the back if you don't. I could only find 2 manufacturers with in-ceiling enclosed speakers, Monoprice being one. Definitely worth it.

Great speakers
I have 6 pairs of these speakers installed throughout two homes and they are great for distributed whole house audio applications. They take a beating and match specs with 'high end brand' two way speakers at about 1/4 the price. Mates well with the Monoprice MPR-6ZMAUT Home Audio Distribution System.
