BEST ANSWER: What you're referring to is called a ferrite core. They're added to cables (all different kinds) to reduce electrical signal interference. They're not necessary, but if you're having issues with your picture, you could buy the pair (like the ones on Monoprice Product #4155) and add them to a cable at a later time.

Going on 10 years strong
I routed these in-wall in front of my fireplace 10 years ago for 1080p content, and they are pumping out quality 4K to this day! My only complaint is that I didn't get them a bit longer.

High-quality cables, great price
These seem to be high-quality cables. I had no trouble with data transmission between my 4K-capable devices and my 4K TV. Picture quality is crisp and at the desired resolution. Highly recommended.

Active HDMI Longer Run Cable
It works as well as a short HDMI cable doing a short distance run. It is much less expensive when you can do 75 Ft HDMI runs with a cable rather than purchasing extender kits and Cat5 or 6 cable.
