This speaker is not bi-amped and the product description should be updated to reflect this. The speakers contains a stereo amp in the right speaker and uses standard speaker wire to connect to the left.

Power is split at the crossover inside the speaker rather than being bi-amped. 100W -> xover -> 35W to tweeter + 65W to woofer

The bi-amping for both speakers happens on the master/active speaker. The secondary is a passive that only gets the high-level signals.

The only connections on my computer are USB connections. How would I hook these up to my computer?
A shopper
on Apr 9, 2022
BEST ANSWER: You should be able to use either bluetooth (normal pairing process) or the USB-B port (white, printer-style) on the speaker, at which point your computer would see the active speaker as an external sound output. When configured to use that, the computer will send digital signal over USB and the speaker's internal DAC will convert that to analog audio for it's own amp (often a better place to do that conversion than the electrically noisy interior a computer)

No worries, you can use these with a USB connection (USB A to USB B) also included on the box. You could also hook them up with Aux cord (RCA to 3.5mm) also included on the box, or you could also use optical port (if your PC/TV supports it) not included on the box.

Does the system have a stand by mode?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it goes into standby when it receives no audio signal for a few minutes. There is a lag of about 5 seconds between the time you resume sending audio to the speakers to when the speakers detect audio and power up. This is true for at least Bluetooth and optical inputs.

Note: This is NOT bi-amplification if there is only one +/- speaker wire pair going to the other speaker. False advertising. Monoprice, based on that, is the amp really A/B?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: "Bi-amplification" has a specific definition in audio. It means that in a two-way system, each driver gets its own amplifier. The MM-5r is not bi-amped, according to that industry-standard definition. We know this, because the left speaker (the one with only speaker terminals) has one set of terminals. One amplifier signal is powering both tweeter and woofer. That is not bi-amplification. Period.

These powered speakers employ an active crossover. That means the signal goes to the crossover first high frequencies go to one amp and and the low frequencies goes to the other. That way each amp only amplifies its portion of the signal. This internal bi-amplification is one advantage of a powered speaker.

The way the manual and speaker description reads, I would think that one amp drives the master speaker and one amp drives the other speaker. It does not mean each amp drives both speakers.

Then why are you calling this an AMT Ribbon Tweeter??? Air Motion Transformers are different things and can produce better imaging but require higher power. You wouldn’t want excessive highs from a ribbon tweeter with only a 5.25” woofer anyway, and for the record, AMTs can produce much more natural sounding highs and better staging than ribbon tweeters WHEN BUILT PROPERLY.

This says “AMT ribbon tweeter.” There’s no such thing. A ribbon tweeter is exactly that. An AMT is an Air Motion Transformer and sounds better than a lot of ribbon tweeters, but these are two different things.

The master speaker is the right channel. When using a digital source, the right-channel signal will always come out of the master. With an analog source, such as with red/white RCA cables, you can always swap channels.

Is that a rear firing port near the top? Will this cause issues if I have these placed 2 inches from the wall?
Daniel R
on Feb 4, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes it is a port - most advice is to have them farther (2-3 feet ideal, 4-6 inches if needed and the port is small) if you can, but 2 inches should have fairly minimal restriction of airflow. The other problem (reflection-induced phase complications) can be mitigated some by treating the surface they're in front of...just some thin foam or fabric to absorb and break up the waves emitted by the port. If it's an open wall, you're mostly ok...if it's a bookshelf or cubby, you'll notice some coloration at 2" (likely in the form of some boominess, which I would tend to avoid with speakers that are already this bass-forward)

BEST ANSWER: So long as the sub accepts standard RCA type single lead cable, then yes, it will work with any Monoprice Subwoofer, or any other brand subwoofer you prefer. I happened to pair with RSL Speedwoofer to great effect. That said, depending on room size and type of music you listen to they are surprisingly bass capable for their size. These are very similar to the Kanto Tuk speaker system. Warmer sounding imo.

There is a USB Type B connector for the signal from your PC. It's what I use, and it works really well. The speakers' DAC also allows you to use its headphone jack when the speakers are connected via USB. There is also a USB Type A connector for charging your phone or whatever. There's also an optical digital audio input connector (TOSlink), plus of course analog audio.

BEST ANSWER: The speakers will go into Standby (energy saver) mode after being idle/no signal for 30 minutes. To prevent this, switch the toggle located on the back of the main speaker to OFF.
Just keep in mind that the speakers will continue to stay on and burn more power in this mode, so it is very inefficient. Allowing them to go into standby when no signal detected requires only trickle power.

Having some issues with my setup with the MM-5R. I connect them to my PC with the RCA cable, and connect them to my Macbook Pro with the 3.5mm audio cable. When both are connected there is a lot of horrible static. If I unplug either one, the static stops. Is this a grounding issue? How do I fix this? I'd love it if I didn't have to juggle cables each time I wanted to switch between my mac and pc audio.

BEST ANSWER: Use Bluetooth to connect the Mac, it’s simple and would remove the ground issues. Sound is still great using it wireless.

Is the tone defeat in these just re-setting the EQ to 0, or is it actually routing the signal differently? Thanks!

Does this have the capability to switch inputs automatically? For example, if the current input is USB, but there's no current USB audio, and the optical signal becomes active, will it switch to that one automatically?

Great speakers and value, especially on sale!
These speakers are a joy. I use them in my living room. Just put on some good music (jazz or classical) crank them up and smile!

Very good
These are not the best powered speakers I've heard, but definitely the best I've heard around $500. When on sale these should be a no brainer for a smaller room or desktop. It has smooth highs, full midrange and punchy bass.
These are forgiving speakers; bad source material won't sound terrible and great recordings will not sound fantastic. Everything I've listened to sounds good.
I also bought the Kanto Tuk to compare head to head. Joe N Tell called these "mini Tuk." That's a good moniker. As one would expect, the Kanto, at 3x the cost is the Tuk is the better speaker in virtually every respect, but the MM-5R are no slouch. I would not hesitate to purchase there's again

A Gateway to Audiophilism
These speakers are so incredibly better than others I've listened to in their class (size and price) that they've made me realize how much I'm missing out on through the other various audio solutions in my house.
I have acquaintances with $20k plus sound systems and I've always kind of rolled my eyes at them. After listening to these for awhile I'm kind of starting to understand. These speakers sound great but highlight a few issues that I now want to delve deeper into my budgets to solve. They are fairly directional, not the best solution to fill a small room evenly with their great sound. They are punchy but lows don't come through as dynamically as in a full 2.1 system. They translate what I send to them so accurately that the difference between 192 and 320 kbps is obvious. Thankfully, I have some other quality bottlenecks to sort before I go spend thousands on stereos.

Best I've heard anywhere.
I have a decent speaker setup and decent receiver, and these speakers blow them out of the water. I used to think that the Monoprice headsets I use gave a good rendering of music, but compared to that they don't. I don't know what it is, whether it's the speakers really or whether it's because their stand points them right at my ears, but the quality is the best I've ever heard. I listen to music pretty much all work day now, they're that good. And now I wonder why Monoprice does not use ribbon tweeters in their most expensive monolith speakers. I don't get it. Anyway, get these on sale if you need desktop speakers, they're awesome.

Best Computer Speakers Around
I have into high end audio all my life. I have had M&K, Canton, B&W, & Sono Faber speakers in my house. Have always been very particular with my listening taste.
When I needed some new speakers for my computer at work I looked around and decided to give these a try. My expectations weren't very high as I have never really found anything for a computer that I have really liked previously. However, I do like to listen to music while working.
These speakers are amazing! You will have to hear them to believe it but they sound better than most speakers costing up to a $1000 a pair.
They create a 3 dimensional soundstage when placed about 5 ft apart. Vocals appear to be right in front of you with guitars and instruments on the left and right. The treble is clean and spacious highlighting the subtle sounds that most speakers simply can't reproduce.. Great speakers can make you hear things in songs that you never noticed before and pick some of your favorite songs and these will do that.
The bass sound leaves something to be desired. Sounds like is is crossed over at about 80-100hz which is not uncommon on a bookshelf speaker. It is clean just not very low at all. However, with the sub out simply adding an 8 inch sub will give you a very high system for around $500. i added the monoprice 8 inch sub and it more than adequate.
These speakers are not super loud and if you are looking to blow the doors out than these may not be the best fit. But if you are looking for a good clean almost audiophile sound for under $500 these are the best thing out there.
FYI I did have the faint humm/buzz people complained about with the 3.5mm jack. However, using the USB connection the sound is perfect complete silence between songs.

Excellent value
I think it would be hard to find something else in this range that brings more value. They easily compete with speakers 2-3x as much that I auditioned alongside. In total I listened to 6 different powered speakers, including from Monoprice, Kanto, Vanatoo, Edifier, and Q Acoustics. There are differences, but they are subtle in most cases. While I ended up opting for another brand with ever slightly more critical listening capability, you really can't go wrong with these. They are a touch warm, and the ribbons sometimes will emphasize poorly recorded (think old rock and metal albums) or sibilant high hats, crash, and ride cymbals. They also require a little more thought in setup because they tend to be somewhat more directional/narrowly focused with less lateral dispersion. But they are fantastic speakers. Superb bass for their size. excellent mid. they are budget friendly Kanto Tuk's imo. Input options are plentiful. Can't beat them bang for buck.

Shockingly good.
I'd had my eye on these for a while, having always had good experience with these folded ribbon/AMT tweeters....what I wasn't expecting was the depth of bass response. As it happened, I first fired these up next to a full THX-certified studio monitor setup with a sub the size of a coffee table, so it was quite a surprise to have these bookshelves covering the audible range of most music, and one of very few speakers I'd be pretty happy to use without a sub (action movie no...music yes).
There's a lot to like: very well-behaved, smooth, just ever so slightly light on highest end (which is often perceived as less fatiguing) but with eyebrow-raising amounts of detail and no standout box resonance or other problem areas. The bass/treble controls sound to me like high/low rolloff and are thus pretty useful in tuning the sound to your liking without creating harsh side effects, and can be adjusted via remote FROM YOUR LISTENING POSITION instead of fumbling behind the speakers themselves. The huge array of inputs, rock solid bluetooth performance, surprisingly nice matte finish (I was not expecting seamless corners) and thankfully subtle branding all round out this package as very likely the best Hi Fi system you're gonna find anywhere under $1K, and certainly the most capable all-in-one solution I've ever heard. And Hi Fi these are - they are not as brutally honest as a studio monitor, but rather more flattering, with just a little extra punch that combines with the buttery smooth and endlessly detailed high end to make you fall in love with all your music all over again.
Oh yeah...and they go to sleep; the standby mode (rare these days, especially with a real amp bypass relay, which you can heard if you listen close) means you really never have to manage these; they turn themselves on when you play something, and back off 10 min or so after you're done. Perfect for smart assistants

Clear and Sharp
The speakers have a clean and sharp sound. The tweeter array provides a clean and detailed depiction of instruments and vocals. If one listens closely you can hear the detail of the instrumentation within the scope of a tune....very nice.
It seems that one must listen to hear the mids, they're there but seem a bit under welming Overall a GREAT setup for the price point of $299!!

Great, lively, open sounding fun! (Very clean design as well)
The MM5Rs sound great! Awesome theatre, gaming, and music speakers imo. The remote gives you bass and treble control but a better EQ would be ideal for lowering the bass response without killing the midrange. Flat response on these make them sound the most spatial and lively to me and I use a dedicated subwoofer for the low end. They get pretty loud and the usb input works great, no hum at all. Heavy as well.
The warranty service is great as well, 5 years no questions asked replacement.
That brings me to my gripes...
Stop marketing the speakers as biamped tweeters and woofers separately! That is simply not possible; advertise that part correctly please.
Use tiffany style rcas jacks and raise the price 10 bucks or something as mine broke once since they are held in by a weak solder joint. (Monoprice replaced it for free but in the time i sent it back and got a replacement I had no set up for a while)
Lastly, and maybe my biggest disappointment, why even include a headphone jack... I mean it is the most crap amplifier I have literally ever heard in my life... The speakers are so good and then this headphone amp is the one thing that you just have to avoid and not think about because it is SO USELESS. My Oneplus can power my headphones with more power... That is a cell phone... Point being it is literally unuseable, quiet and so muffled.
Love the speakers! Would buy in a heartbeat when on sale! Also consider listing the DAC details please!
