No. I highly recommend building enclosures from MDF material to install these into. I did so and they sound really great!

Will these work with common 2x4 and 1/2 inch drywall construction?
Christopher H
on Feb 10, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. I have 4 or these mounted in my house with 2x4 and 1/2 drywall. They sound really great as surround speakers.
The only caveat to be careful of is that mounting "wings" that hold it to the drywall can be a bit fussy and fragile. Make sure you look at the mechanism carefully before tightening the screws. Make sure that the wings swing out as you turn the screw. Also, if you feel any resistance before it is tightly mounted stop. I bent the screw and nearly broke the plastic wing on one of mine. If you're careful, they're just fine, though.
Aside from the slightly funky and fragile mounting system, they are highly recommended.

Chris is right and I HIGHLY recommend tightening and then loosening each tab once BEFORE you go to install it in the wall. This exercises the plastic / metal and deals with any burrs beforehand so that your actual installation goes more smoothly.

How does this speaker compare to https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24433 ? I'm torn which is better option for Front R/L. I've also hear people say they preferred the sound of the Calibers... hard decision. I understand that the ribbon is more directional, but having trouble rating everything against each other.

I can only speak to the 24432 with is the 6.5" two way ribbon and it has to be the best buy in in-wall anywhere!
In my opinion ribbon tweeters are superior to any other form of tweeters. They are smooth and extended and do not have the typical sizzle I've grown to hate from many other tweeters especially metal domes.
I bought the pair of the 24432's a couple of weeks ago and they continue to sound better as they break in. I use two 10" subwoofers with them and they sound amazing for the money, at $90. a pair on sale you can't go wrong. I also prefer a 2-way speaker to a 3-way and a 1 way would be even better if you could manage the frequency response.
All that said I did not really answer your question, sorry...TJ

The ribbon tweeter is nice, but, I purchased the silk dome tweeters due to sound preference. You'll want to pay attention to a term called 'timbre matching' to assure the sound from all your speakers sounds the same. If you already have ribbon tweeters, and can match the sound, go for a whole set. I personally like the silk dome tweeters because they sound warmer. Both speakers should be great quality, I'm impressed with the price vs performance of the Monoprice product line.

Will these connect via wire to a soundbar and used as rear speakers?

BEST ANSWER: Hi, thank you for your question. These in-wall speakers require an amplifier to work. If your sound bar has a built-in amplifier with L/R speaker ports, you may use this one. However, most of the sound bars in the market only offers RCA input/output. I hope this helps.

These speakers require an amplifier, so either the soundbar would have to have 8ohm amplified outputs for L and R on it, or you would have to run through a small amplifier that can take the audio out from the soundbar and amplify it for these speakers. If you're soundbar only has RCA or 3mm audio outputs, then you could purchase powered speakers which have a built in amp that can take RCA or 3mm input.

Unless your soundbar has a built-in amplifier for external speakers, as well as the capabilities of interpreting 5.1 (or more) channels and separating those; no. These speakers need an amplifier. And in your case, in order to also use them as rear speakers (properly, that is), you'll also need a decoder to separate the front channels from the rear.

I will be placing these in a wall that is open on the back side. I'm planning to box it in. What would you recommend for enclosure volume?..... "How big should I make the box to get the best sound."
Travis S
on May 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: If the T/S parameters given are correct, a box with an internal volume of about 0.7 ft3 seems to give the best balance of power handling and extension with a Qtc of .787. Assuming built into a 2x4 wall with studs 16" on center that would mean the "box" would need to measure around 3.5"x14.5"x24" on the inside dimensions. At 50w signal with 80Hz crossover you should be able to keep from reaching Xmax of the woofer and still have good midbass punch.

These are great speakers. Don't let the low price deter you, they are plenty loud and clear. I use my Denon 3700H as a preamp and power these with external amps. They punch way above their price point.

Awesome sound, only after break-in.
In the beginning, I wasn't impressed at all. They sounded terribly out of the box. Too bright and ugly sound. But after setting up the right crossover settings on the receiver and by the end of the break-in period, they started to sound amazing! Make sure to follow the break-in instructions. Now, after that, I really love them! They are simply the most awesome in-wall/ceiling speakers for the price! These are way better than the Micca ones I have in my bedroom. The sound dispersion and clarity are awesome.

Better than I thought
I bought these without too many reviews but I have to say they sound great and were easy (as possible with an in-wall) to install. No regrets. Hopefully they last a while as now have a pretty large hole in the wall. I hooked them up to two different receivers. An older large stereo receiver and they sounded good, a little bright and not as much bass but clear and louder than I would ever want to go. Then I got myself a small 100W amp off amazon that had adjustments for treble and bass. This smaller amp can't get the volume as high but with maxed out bass and a little bump for treble they sound awesome for music and can still get louder than I would ever want to listen to music. I would recommend.

Take your time, and these will be great!
These 8" Alphas did take time to break in. The included paperwork asks for 80 hours of low volume use before turning up the power, and I'm here to tell you that you NEED to follow this instruction.
Do NOT judge these speakers' audio qualities in the first 20 hours; its going to suck and that is pretty normal. Bass response will be awful because all the materials are so stiff. But after 20 hours you will notice a significant warmup and its almost ok at 40 hours. At 65 hours I had "normal" speakers and was beginning to love them! I finished out the 80 hours with more "medium" volume and it was just fine.
If you can, build an MDF enclosure (back and sides) into your wall to help bass response. I did and wow I basically have "normal" cabinet speakers in wall. These 8" woofers have ALOT of capability. You've seen all the online reviews about how in-wall speakers suck, right? Well, a simple MDF enclosure solves 70% of that, and the size and build quality of these Alphas solve another 20%.
No, audiophiles are not going to recommend these for your main left / right / center channels. But especially with enclosures, every non-audiophile will have no problems doing so; they are THAT good. 8" is a helluva lot of power.
Lastly, another reviewer here recommended taking the time BEFORE actual installation to tighten each of the 6 screws (mounting tabs) and then return them back to the original position. That reviewer gets my kudos and I strongly recommend the same. The factory just screws the tabs onto the screws about 1/4"; they are crazy stiff and you want the install to be easy. By "exercising" the tabs up and down once, any kinks or burrs get worked out BEFORE you go to the wall.
Bottom line, these 8" Alphas are a good value and will work well if you just take your time pre-install and be patient while they break in. Highly recommended!

Exceptional value
I highly recommend these speakers. I've also got a pair of the Caliber in-wall speakers (both are 3-way, 8"). I will say that the Carbon Fiber Alphas sound better to me. Granted, I am using these speakers for surround sound so most of what they do is ricochet sounds, jets flying overhead, bats flying all around, etc.. However, I did play some music through them and they sound amazing for $143.00 a pair.

So far, I'm impressed.
I purchased the 3 way 8" Alphas. These are currently running as my left and right sides and surrounds to finish off my 7.1 surrounds. Marantz receiver set them as large using Audyssey. My front maybe are JBL S38s and an S Center. So far, these Alphas seen to have higher effiency over the JBLs. The mid and highs seem a little brighter. Still need to break them in, I'll try to report back later. So far, I'm pleased and may come back for more Alphas to add height speakers to complete my Atmos 11.1 surrounds.
