My Toshiba tv has a coaxial output and my surround sound has a digital toshlink input. will this device solve my problem?

BEST ANSWER: I used this adapter to connect a digital DVD player to an analog sound board at our church, and it worked perfectly. I'm not really sure what you're trying to do. Are you trying to hook the TV to the receiver? If so, then you shouldn't have a problem since most receivers are equipped with both a coaxial and a toshlink connection , and they are both digital. Obviously you do have a problem however, or you wouldn't be trying to fix it. Maybe someone else can provide the info you need. Good luck! PS Have you tried using a regular yellow video cable (not a TV coaxial) to connect the TV to the receiver?

You’re incorrect. The coax on your tv is most likely an input, not an output. It’s rare for the digital output on a tv to be coax (which looks like RCA) rather than optical (toslink). Verify the labels of the ins and outs before purchasing a cable or adapter.

This unit has optical in and coax out. It works for an Xbox I have connected from optical to a coax into a soundbar. It works perfectly. I think they sell a unit with coax in optical out which I think is what you're saying you need.

Will the coaxial out be in stereo or mono?
Corey B
on Apr 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Both the input and output are S/PDIF digital signals. The input is S/PDIF Digital Optical and the output is S/PDIF Digital over Copper (Coax cable with RCA/Phono connectors). S/PDIF carries a stereo digital signal. You can use only one of the two channels, of course, for mono. BUT the RCA output is not an analog signal, it will have to be attached to a S/PDIF digital input on another device!

My TV's S/PDIF coax connection is screw type, but your digital optical audio converter end requires different type of coax connector, is there a mixed end coax cable? Otherwise I'm out of luck purchased this converter or buy a new TV.

Both Signals are Digital. So yes, stereo. But if you connect the RCA to an analog input, it will not work. Just one uses light (Toslink) and the other electrical signals (Digital Coaxial (RCA))..

Neither, it's still in digital form. You need to convert it to an Analog signal. You will need to use the #6884, as long as the signal isn't encoded in 5.1

Is there a light indicator?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: No there isn't a light indicator. This product has worked perfectly for me. I ran a a toslink cable from an Apple TV to the convertor, then a digital coaxial cable on to my DAC. The DAC's toslink connection was being used by my Macbook, thus the need for the convertor. This device did exactly what it's supposed to do and performed flawlessly.

How do I hook it to my cable box , tv, DVD and sound bar? I know I run the optical cable to the plug on one end, but what do I plug in the other end?
A shopper
on Sep 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is if you have a toslink optical output from your dvd, cable box, game console etc( square-ish looking plug) and you have run out of toslink sockets on your reciever, and all you have are coax optical inputs( round rca plug - dunno if you need a special cable or not, used monoprice for both. I’m assuming your tv/sound bar is the final output, and there is no reciever in between. So- look at the back of your dvd player/ cable box. There should be a digital audio out, if you’re not using HDMI for connecting, your sound bar/tv may have a digital audio IN, either toslink or coaxial. If you wanted dolby digital/dts and you couldn’t use Hdmi to whatever, you could use this. Hope that helps..jb

I used this converter to take an older sound system which required a coaxial input connection (RCA) to connect to a newer device which uses a toslink output. You can use this converter on any device which OUTPUTS audio through a Toslink connection but your INPUT device (sound system) has no Toslink but uses RCA/coaxial. Note: this is a one-way connecter, you can't reverse the connection.
Good luck

Hello, The output from your cable box or DVD player for sound will be carried by the optical cable to this device and this device will convert optical audio to coaxial. The only reason you need this device is if you have an older digital to audio converter that accepts only coaxial input.

Is anyone getting "discrete" Dolby Digital 5.1 passed through this? I believe I'm only getting 2-channel PCM and thus my AVR is outputting it as Dolby Pro Logic IIx. My AVR indicator light is showing PCM. (I'm running a Roku 4400R through this device and I do have the Roku set to output Dolby Digital and not Dolby Digital(+)Plus or plain stereo.)
Ray
on Nov 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I am getting Dolby Digital 5.1 through my cable STB's optical output to my pre-pro's coaxial input. Depending on how you have your system configured, the problem may be that your TV is indicating to the Roku via EDID information over HDMI that it only has two audio channels and thus the audio format out of the Roku is being output as stereo PCM. If I switch my pre-pro's input to the output of my smart TV when watching through the STB's HDMI, the audio format out of my smart TV is stereo PCM. But if I am watching an Amazon Prime show or an OTA channel that is in 5.1, the audio format out of my smart TV is Dolby Digital 5.1.

Thanks. I think Roku senses that I am using both the HDMI out and the S/PDIF out at the same time (one to send video to my projector and the other to send audio to my AVR) and Roku modified firmware to limit the 'channels' out the S/PDIF for some reason....which really bums me out.

So, this has a DC power supply. I would IMAGINE that the wall power plug would be able to handle EITHER the US power system OR the European one (clearly in the latter case a converter plug would be required) and NOT a voltage transformer. Can someone please confirm that the voltage rating on the plug itself says something like: 110 - 230 volts?

It works but isn't well made
I bought one of these years ago and it failed so I tossed it in my parts bucket.
I recently opened it to see what went wrong and it is one of the lowest quality electronic boards I have seen in years. It looks like something from the 1970s.
Hopefully the board quality has improved from when this was originally introduced.

Toslink Optical to Coax converter
This unit works very well. I had a situation where Toslink was going through too many feed-throughs. The optical reflection back and forth at each interface caused the signal to be corrupted, and lost. Going coax through the feed-throughs solved the problem.

Fantastic
Great price, works for converting audio for older AV receiver (make sure you get both pieces for conversion). I didn't want to shell out $400-800 for a new AV receiver, this will give you the audio out from your TV to the receiver.
