is the Monoprice Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps) USB-C Cable, 100W, 2.0m compatible with 2017 macbook pro?

BEST ANSWER: It should be as long as one of your Thunderbolt 3 ports work. I have a Macbook Pro 2019, Lenovo X1 Carbon and a Dell XPS 15 with Thunderbolt ports. They can all connect to my Caldigit TB3 and Lenovo TB4 docks with the cable with no hiccups.

Yes, I used this cable for our office 2017 MacBook Pro graphics computer. As long as you have the right power brick wattage you should be all good.

So strictly for Data transfer, is 60 enough?
William B
on Oct 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The power rating (100w vs 60w) refers only to the cable's ability to power your laptop and charge its battery. If you're plugging in a charger separately, you probably don't care about the power rating of this cable.

Does this cable support the DisplayPort 1.4 protocol?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: I can't answer the question directly, but the 6ft version of the cable does work with two of my monitors over DP alt mode, one via 4k@144Hz. So I'm quite certain the answer is "yes."

Monoprice USB4 Type-C Gen 3x2 40Gbps 100W, Black, 0.8m (2.6ft)
BEST ANSWER: USB4 is not the same as Thunderbolt 3. In 2019, the USB IF announced it had completed its standard for USB 4. While not seemingly out of the ordinary, the announcement unexpectedly revealed that the next generation of USB 4 was effectively Thunderbolt 3, though with small tweaks.
Like Thunderbolt 3, USB 4 uses a Type-C connector, has a throughput of up to 40Gbps, power delivery of up to 100W, support for 4K and 5K displays, and backward compatibility with USB 3.2 and USB 2.
It also includes support for Thunderbolt 3 itself, though it is technically optional. A device can be set up not to have support for the standard, but given the benefits, it seems unlikely that a hardware vendor would disable it.
As a further upgrade from earlier USB generations, USB4 also supports PCIe tunneling and DisplayPort 1.4a, which can help take advantage of the higher throughput. However, if there's no support for PCIe tunneling in the host or device, the maximum bandwidth for non-display purposes is limited to 20Gbps.

Dreamy 30hz
Using a 2023 MacBook Pro and a Philips 4K monitor, which both support 4k 60hz over USB-C, this cable maxes out at 30hz.

Good product
Use it to connect my laptop to an external screen. Graphics and power in one cable. So far so good.

2m doesn't work with USB-C monitor
I bought the 2m because it was on sale and I wanted to put my Asus Zencreen on an arm. Supposed to be TB3 USBC but the Asus Zenscreen doesn't recognize it with my M1 Max. Zenscreen works with the original cable

Works great
I mean there isn't a whole lot to say since it is a thunderbolt cable that works as specified. So I have this between my M1 MacBook pro and a thunderbolt 3 dock. The connector seems to nicely fit without easily falling out, and I get reliable data connectivity. The cable is nicely flexible.

Passive Thunderbolt
Not an active cable, but that is my mistake. Wish it was more evident in the product description.

Inconsistent
I feel like most of the "it's a cable!" reviews aren't using this as a Thunderbolt 3 cable. I wanted to use this to move a noisy RAID array farther away from my desktop. It worked most of the time, but the other 10% of the time it wouldn't mount the array and the RAID enclosure would show an error (blinking light in my case). When I daisy chained thunderbolt devices via this cable it never worked. And, if you have a cable for data transfer, you need it to work 100% of the time. I assume it's not transferring the full 40Gbps or causing another issue. I haven't had these issues with any of my other TB3 cables (shorter versions supplied with my various G-Drive products).
I'm switching over to the (enormously expensive) Apple cable, which is more reliable. For the price, I could see this cable being great for many uses. Just not fully implementing it as a TB3 cable. I'll probably keep using it as a normal USB-C cable.

Pleasantly surprised
I really did not expect much at this price point. I?m using it with my Targus dock which has 100 watt power delivery and no issues. Cable is very flexible and feels of great quality. Highly recommended.
