Can these grills be painted to match existing wall color?
New User U
on May 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, very easily. You have to remove the cloth behind the grill first (but it's was to do and re-attach when finished painting). I would strongly recommend NOT painting with a brush - use a spray can or paint sprayer.

Yes. They can be painted with a roller or sprayed. If you plan to roll them, use a roller for smooth walls. I used a foam roller with very little paint on each pass. Do not use too much pressure when applying paint. Paint using 3-4 thin layers.

Yes but when painting grills (cause of the tiny holes), you need to use a sprayer and thin the paint with a paint thinner appropriate for your paint. This will prevent the holes from getting clogged. Do very light coats to prevent clogging.

You should be able to - they’re metal, and attach with magnets. Maybe try a spray paint instead of a thicker, brush-on latex or oil paint (something that’s less apt to plug up the small holes of the grille)

Thinking back to when I installed these, I think the 2 dimensions are the physical cut-out (ie the hole you cut in your ceiling) and then the absolute outside of the speaker frame itself. I installed these into a drywall ceiling with no issues (other than a face full of drywall dust). Speakers sound great, using in a 7.1.4 Atmos setup. Hope that helps!

I got these speakers and the rough in brackets. The speakers required a bigger cut out than the brackets, so I ended up breaking out the brackets and cutting the holes bigger. All that said, they are nice speakers.

Why do these speakers need to be so big? Most in ceiling speakers are roughly the same size as the woofer. These speakers have an entire surround making them many times larger then the woofer itself.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your interest in these ceiling speakers. The cut-out is larger than most because of the optional bass port included on the frame. When used with the back can it will greatly improve bass performance.

Monoprice Metal Back Can for 8-inch Ceiling Speaker with Brackets (pair)
I purchased these back cans and played music through the four 6.5" Amber ceiling speakers that I own, two at a time, with port open and port closed. with can on and can off. I could not tell a difference between having a back can or not when the port was closed. With the port open with either a back can or not I felt the sound was possibly worse. I'm chalking up any perceptible difference I MAY have heard to placebo as it was definitely not clearly noticeable like the difference between these speakers and some 8" 4x cost models in base production, and to be honest the additional base from the far more expensive speakers likely isn't worth 4x the cost. Be that as it may I got the cans on sale so the additional cost was about 20% more than the normal speaker price. To say they sounded even 10% better would probably be a stretch. I am no audiophile by any means but that's my uneducated take on them in my own ceilings.

This is incorrect. I have removed the port without back boxes, then installed back boxes with and without the port removed and there was no noticeable effect on bass output on the 6.5". If anything they sounded worse with the port removed. These ports have two screws that make them look like they are designed to be removable but upon removing the screws you will find that they are also permanently super glued on. You can knock them out with some force but clearly they were not meant to be removed as stated above.

If I a putting this in very small home theater (12x12 room) Do I need the subwoofer? I'd pair these with the 8" for the rears, and the matching center. Seems like enough bass in that small space...or is it worth adding you 12" sub? I don't want to overwhelm the space.

I agree with "New User U" in that the purpose of a sub is to hit those really low notes and movie sound effects. Also, a well designed surround receiver removes the low bass notes from the satellite channels and funnels it towards the sub output RCA jack anyway. So you would be lacking in the bass content in these or any brand of satellite speakers.
Also consider that nearly every powered (i.e. an amplifier is built into the sub enclosure) sub has a volume/level control to make 'voicing' match the listening environment.

Can these speakers be used in-wall as the surrounds in a 5.1.4 setup as well as in-ceiling? How would they compare to 24433 for that purpose? Because of the ribbon tweeter, do they need to be oriented in a particular direction to ensure adequate/correct dispersion?

BEST ANSWER: Enclosures for 'bookshelf' speakers are always a compromise in design. If I were mounting these in the ceiling and only had attic above (i.e. not the floor of an upper living space), I'd lay a section of fiberglass insulation over the speaker to keep dust and foreign object from rattling on the woofer and let the attic serve as a "infinite" baffle. Any box you put a speaker into becomes resonant to a certain frequency and its harmonics. If too shallow, say the depth of the ceiling joist (typically 5-1/2") then you risk reflecting midrange frequencies making the speaker sound 'nasal' in quality.

It's my understanding the Amber line is a slightly better line than the Alpha; I'm going between this 8" Alpha angled drivers (#34198) vs the 8" Amber (#24435) ones. Going into our first floor ceiling (so bedrooms above) for a family room with TV. I'm not super concerned with angles and atmos qualification etc, just want good sound to those on the couch and crank some tunes every once in a while without distortion. Thoughts on which is better for my application?

The angle feature is nice but I'd rather have the better components...so if Dave says the components are virtually the same then that'll seal the deal for the Alphas angled for me.

BEST ANSWER: You can use 18 gauge wire, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest 16 gauge as it just makes 50ft at 8 Ohms.

Excellent speakers
Excellent speakers. Recommend 8 inch over the 6 inch if you have the space.

Pretty good for ceiling speakers
These have worked about as well as I expected. Bass response could be better, but mounting was easy and the clarity of the audio is excellent.
In theory, these can be mounted in a can, opening a bass port for better low-end response. I've seen other reviews suggest that doing that makes the speakers *too* heavy on the bass response, which I'd be wary of as well. But maybe one day I'll get curious and try that, even though the port cover appears to be glued on and so may be questionable as to whether the current iteration of the design is really intended to be used that way.
For now though, these have been serving me very well. They aren't in a room where one would expect a "full range experience" anyway. They are in the kitchen, and they fill in the listening experience well enough to get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

Excellent Ceiling Speakers (Height in Dolby Atmos)
I am using these in my 11.2 home theater and they are great. I have 6 speakers, two each for L/R, Sur L/R, & Rear L/R. I paired them with two Amber Center speakers, four Amber Ceiling speakers and two Monoprice 12' subs. I am driving them with a Marantz 6015 and a Yamaha 2-channel power amp. The room is acoustically treated and the system sounds fantastic! The ribbon tweeters produce nice, warm highs just as the Marantz does. Recommend all Amber Series Speakers.

Build Quality Issues
I just received a pair of these speakers and both had similar quality issues that seem like a manufacturing defect. The grills on both were flimsy and started coming apart as soon as I took them out of the box. While unboxing the speakers, I heard something rattling around which is never inspiring with a speaker. It turns out one of the screws in each speaker was stripped from the mounting bracket which leaves a small gap between the speaker and mount. I'm not sure if this will impact the sound quality but I'm not willing to risk cutting holes in my ceiling to find out. I've purchased other speakers from Monoprice and they have been fantastic so it really seems like a manufacturing issue with this batch of speakers. I will return these and try the 6 inch version to see if they are better built. It's too bad because I was really excited about this 8 inch pair.

Great Speakers!
Great speakers! The sound is pretty amazing for ceiling speakers. Installation was easy. My only wish was that they were directional.

Good Sound but cant recommend for Atmos
Great sounding speaker but you can not aim the drivers. For this reason I would not recommend for Atmos speakers.
