How's the audio latency? I bought a different extractor to connect between Apple TV 4k and my stereo (Sonos Play 5), but there's a noticeable audio delay.

BEST ANSWER: There isn't any. It's actually the reason I ended up with this one. Everything passes though with no issue. The only thing is if the source (like the apple TV) changes from 2CH to Surround, there is a 1 second pause of no audio (could also just be my older receiver).

I use it to extract audio to my stereo system. There is a slight delay if I have the TV volume on at the same time as my stereo system causing an echo effect. All I do is turn down the TV volume.

You’ll get a delay with a Play 5 no matter what, they’re not made to sync with tv audio like a playbar or playbase is.

Will this unit pass through the audio over the HDMI cable to the TV AND ALSO output the audio to the line out or optical jack? Or does it strip the audio from the HDMI output?

BEST ANSWER: I have this unit so I can watch and listen to my TV. When I want better quality sound, I pipe the audio out from this device to my stereo system. It doesn't strip out the audio from the hdmi signal, it just sends a copy of the audio out the line out jack or optical.

The unit does not strip the audio from the HDMI stream. It simply extracts the 5.1 audio stream and outputs it to the optical output OR extracts the stereo stream and outputs it to the analog mini jack.

I have not used this feature myself but, from the Users Manual and other on-line information: "Supports stereo analog and multichannel digital optical S/PDIF audio". So, if your fiber optic audio supports S/PDIF then, Yes, it will work for you.

I need to extract Atmos sound to the sound bar, but since this doesn't have a HDMI audio out, am I correct that it won't work? Are there any options to separate 4k 18gbps and Atmos/DTS:X?
Jaro S
on Jan 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: So there’s a couple options that look similar to the pic of what you were inquiring. First, there IS an hdmi out, must be on the other side of the box that the pic doesn’t show. But if you zoom in, you can see the light for “hdmi out”.
So I’ve used these quite a bit to get 2ch analog audio out on blurays for distributed audio. Where you ask about ATMOS, I see there’s PID 24478 that looks like it holds the 18gbps but it doesn’t say if it’s 5.1 or 7.1! The pid 13348 mentions 7.1, but only 10gbps.
Monoprice has amazing support, but it’s only on their chat deal on their website. But ask a few of those more technical questions with them to figure out the best option.

It will pull the full audio signal out of HDMI and send it to the optical out in the Blackbird. I get full surround processing in my setup (no downconversion to bitstream, although that's an switchable option). But I don't know why you wouldn't just go SACD optical/toslink or coax straight to your amp. I've NEVER seen an SACD deck that had HDMI, but not a toslink or coax output.

Can I run hdmi from my laptop to this extractor and optical out to some powered monitors?
A shopper
on Jan 30, 2024
BEST ANSWER: HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) is the acknowledged connection standard for transferring video and audio digitally from a source to a video display device or other compatible home entertainment devices.. The HDMI signal contains both digital audio and video signals.
The "Monoprice Blackbird 4K HDMI Audio Extractor" device extracts the video and audio signals into two streams: HDMI Video out, that contains the video signal, and Optical Audio out that contains the audio signal.
From your question it appears that you need to take the HDMI signal and distribute it to two or more monitors. For this you will require a HDMI Splitter. An HDMI splitter is a device that allows you to split an HDMI signal from a single source to multiple displays. There are many different types of HDMI splitters available, ranging from simple 2-port models to more complex 8-port models.

Yes if your powered monitors accept any of optical formats LPCM 2CH, LPCM 5.1, Dolby Digital 2/5.1CH, DTS 2.5.1CH which this extractor's instruction sheet says it supports. Of course, it also provides conventional Left and Right conventional electrical audio signals via the audio jack. For what it's worth, this extractor works perfectly for me!! Good luck!

BEST ANSWER: Yes, but you must have a monitor connected so that the source can determine what type of audio to output on HDMI. It works great with Windows PC's because Windows Audio Device controls the volume of the HDMI data.
The analog output can drive headphones to a comfortable level, or you can route the analog output to an amplifier.

Question related to Blackbird 4K HDMI audio extractor (#24278). The switch in the Input section has three options TV, Bitstream and 2-CH. What does setting to TV mean ? Thanks in advance for the answers

The Bitstream option passes the audio output from the video source device and the 2CH option sets audio to 2-channel stereo." There's no mention of up or down conversion; just straight pass-through.

The Bitstream option passes the audio output from the video source device and the 2CH option sets audio to 2-channel stereo." There's no mention of up or down conversion; just straight pass-through.

BEST ANSWER: I can confirm the unit can extract Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC-3) from and Apple TV 4K unit via HDMI. I believe the Apple unit can output both AC-3 as well as E-AC-3 (7.1). I have no data on E-AC-3.

Monoprice BitPath AV HDMI over Ethernet Extender Kit
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
We would not test our extenders and extractors together so we cannot guarantee it would work together at all.
If they were to function as long as you keep the HDMI cables short (6' or less).

Is this extractor backwards compatible with HDCP 1.4 for playing 1080p content? The HDMI signal path will be: Roku ultra > This audio extractor > BenQ projector (HDCP 1.4). If I plug a hard drive with 1080p videos on it into the roku, Will the video make it to the projector? Also, if the 1080p video has either AC3 or DTS 5.1, it will come out of this extractors optical out, correct?

I am trying to find a way to send simple stereo audio files (WAV, FLAC) from a PC to an older stereo system while being controlled by a phone/tablet. My thought that I would use Plex with a Chromecast Audio thing, but Google has discontinued the Chromecast Audio product. Would this device work with a Chromecast Ultra to provide the same function?

It works!
Bought it because my 10 yr old bedroom tv doesn't have any audio outputs. The sound bar I had had an HDMI in and an HDMI out to the tv and it went bad after 6 years. So This unit taps the audio from the ROKU streamer I have via the S/PDIF to my new sound bar.
It works fine. No degradation in the video signal. The only thing is it also passes the audio signal to the tv. So I have to keep the tv sound volume to 0 so only the sound bar plays.

Getting TV sound into hearing aid streamer -- problem solved!
I donate a fair amount of time to volunteering in the blind/low vision and deaf/hard-of-hearing communities. One blind veteran I help needed to get TV sound into his hearing aids via streaming since he's not only blind but now nearly deaf. His TV had no audio output! I put one of these little "black boxes" in the HDMI connection between his satellite TV set-top box and his TV. It produces perfect sound for his hearing aid streamer transmitter. Plus, for sighted hard of hearing folks, it preserves "lip-sync!" I'm a happy repeat customer -- it's a great "black box!"

Not really working - still havent heard from support
Pros: great small form factor, easily attached to the back of my tv with a strip of heavy duty velcro. The audio to the analog output (L/R) sounds clean, clear and its full range. 4:2:2 runs from AppleTV into our SonyTV without issue.
Cons: after going through all the settings have yet to get any response from the optical out on the device. The manual is not at all clear regarding which setting to select based on the input. After selecting all three of the switch settings none of them produce an optical signal that my Denon can consume. My optical cable lights up, and the device indicator light says its getting a signal. But nothing on the other end of the optical line. Just ordered an 8ft RCA to 1/8" cable because the analog output is the only one that works.
The entire intent of this device was to use the optical line I already had running through the wall. Now I have to run another line. Support email from over a week ago has gone unanswered.
So, YMMV with this device. Good luck.

Well built and performs as advertised
The Monoprice Blackbird 4K HDMI Audio Extractor, 18Gbps, HDCP 2.2 is well built and performs as advertised. I only wish that I had recognized its utility years ago. One caution, I discovered the existing and working driver for my graphics card was out of date and would only do 2 channel output. Fortunately, I stumbled on the updated driver to make the board output5 channels to the gizmo.

Works as expected allowing me to continue using my old but good sounding surround receiver. Got it paired up with a HDMI switch for added flexibility. Unit is smaller than expected and feels solidly built.
