Does the rubber-looking tubing negatively impact sound quality at all? And does the speaker wire go inside the rubber tubing?
A shopper
on Jan 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The rubber tube is heat shrink. It is there as an added strain relief should your cable need it. You have to remove it to use the jack, the wire will not make contact with inside of the jack if you do not.

the black and red pieces appear to be hard plastic. They are threaded to mate with the banana plug just behind the plug. The gold plated connector runs almost all the way to the tail end of the colored shield. The wire goes inside the gold plated part. There are two set screws in the base of the gold plated piece -- I presume one is intended to make electrical contact with the wire and the other grabs onto the end of the wire insulation. The colored shield fits over the back of the gold plated part and covers the set screws. I don't hear any distortion, but I'm no audiophile.

No, I remove the rubber tubing. I think it’s there to keep the screws from scratching the item during shipping. My wire won’t fit with the rubber tubing in place. The key is good contact between the copper wire and the plug.

I believe the rubber-looking tubing inside the plug is to keep the set screws in place during shipping/handling. Take it out and discard it before inserting your speaker wire.

I just took it out when i installed the wire. i think its it just there so the crimp screw doesn't loosen up in storage and shipping.

The heat-shrink tubing included with each end is not explained, it is likely that the heat shrink was intended to give pressure against the set screw so as not to fall out during transport. My other thought on this is that can be placed and shrunk "up to" edge before the exposed wire portion (which gets inserted) for a finished look or, discard if you wish. Do not cover up the exposed wire with the tube as you will not get any electrical contact in that way.
In case this was about the plastic grip portion: The connector is a metal barrel with a hole in the center that the wire inserts into, and a set-screw screws down into the exposed wire. The plastic holder then slides up "over" the metal connector, threading onto the outside of the barrel connector.

Rubber tubing is meant to clean up the stripped ends of the wire insulation - normally you’d slide it over the stripped edge of the insulation. I didn’t use it at all. Do not leave it in the location it is shipped to you because it will get in the way of the electrical contact points.

Do you mean that little black fold of rubber that came inside the plug? I think that is just to provide some resistance for the metal screws during shipping. I removed it prior to installing the plugs on the wire and have had no sound issues since. Everything's worked fine.

Frankly, I had the same concern which is why I decided to go with high quality spade connectors, instead. Also, these banana plugs were/are a little shaky when connected; not the solid contact I've had with other brands.

The Tubing looks like rubber but it's actually metal. The only purpose of the tubing is to cover up the screws underneath that attach the wires on the inside. I'm very pleased with this product, you wont be disappointed.

The colored shell is actually made of metal - it unscrews off of the plug end. Speaker wire is clamped in the inner portion of the plug using side-mounted set screws

It was unclear what purpose the tubing served. With that said, I removed it from each of the plugs. My Klipsch speakers sound awesome.

Is the outer colored sleeves conductive? Magnetic?

BEST ANSWER: The outside sleeves appear to be aluminum (not plastic, as mentioned above), anodized or painted. They are not magnetic.

If the finish is intact, they measure as not conductive. But I scratched the finish on the inside to reach bare metal, and then I could measure much lower resistance. I would not depend on the conductivity one way or the other, given that it could vary based on the integrity of the finish.

They are actually plastic, although they look metallic. Non-conductive, not magnetic.

The ferro-manganese tip and likely the set screws are attracted to strong (e.g. rare earth) permenant magnets but are not inherently magnetic by themselves (i.e. won't stick to a fridge or a steel door). The sleeve is non-magnetic.

Great quality, reasonable price, versatile
Banana screw type with outer shell works great. If my speaker cable is too thick (10AWG or less), I don't use the provided screws because the shell doesn't fit over the screws. In that case I solder the cable through the 2 screw holes; no screws used.
This is not an issue if you use 12AWG or smaller speaker wire.
Overall very pleased with this banana connector.

Easy, tool-less, inexpensive, sound good
Very easy to install. I followed the recommendation of someone on another forum regarding the two inner screws in the banana plug:
The screw further from the banana plug end should be used as a strain relief. When terminating your cable, leave enough shielding so that this screw can hold onto the bit of shielding that goes inside the banana plug. Worked well.
The one downside to these is the red/black part of each plug won't stay screwed in. I find myself tightening these all the time. Only reason these are 4 star and not 5. Granted, I'm probably handling my cables more often than the average person would but nevertheless.

Be careful when handling
These banana plugs appear well designed and work well as long as there is no stress on the actual plug (bannana) section that inserts into the female receiver the male purchased piece plugs into. If not handled with care, the male plug end pulls off and can not be reattached without inordinate effort, if at all.

Works very well, but nothing on the back of the plug to secure the wire, if that makes sense.

Get them
I like that fact they are copper with gold plating. They're easy to use, securely keep wire in place and good sound quality. I cannot speak to durability or anything longevity related as I've been using them less than two months.

Great Plugs - Could be Improved
These banana plugs are great in most respects. However, like their predecessor, the collar 'unscrews' itself easily and the collar can short out the terminals to which they are connected. Loctite or other thread-locker is required to inhibit such action.

Better quality, more secure connection and easier to use than Monoprices standard Banana plugs. They fit more tightly into the speaker terminals as well.
