Is the power adapter necessary, or can the hub be self-powered when plugged into a laptop or vehicle?

Does this have overcharge protection?
A shopper
on May 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Smart devices, like phones, tablets, etc. control charging inside the device... when the battery reaches full charge, the device stops accepting power from the charging device. "Dumb" devices with batteries that are usually replaceable and often look like conventional AAA or AA batteries, may not have overcharge protection and it's up to you to stop charging after some period of time. Also, USB 3.1 transfers data twice as fast as USB 3.0 so a USB 3.1 expander may be a better purchase for many people as it will be compatible with USB 3.1 in their next computer even if their current computer does not have USB 3.1.

Mine works with windows 10. It doesn’t require a driver so I’m not sure why it wouldn’t work.

Can I purchase the ac adapter separately? If not, can you give me the model number?
My usb hub came with the wrong ac adapter but I found out like a year later when I actually needed it to power more devices.

BEST ANSWER: I purchased the "4" not the "4x1", mine does not have ac adapter. Until you asked question I never paid attention, although I did want one that did not require using ac.

Works fine right away - no hassle!
It worked like a charm when I plugged it in, both on a Mac and a PC.

Pretty good
Used it to connect 4 controllers to a laptop, and later just to keep track of my bluetooth chip. It's solid, works pretty well without external power as well.

Does the right things for the right price.
Small cheap and solved the problem of limited ports on a new laptop.

It works, but
The only complaint is the overly bright LED, and on my hub, the USB ports must be misshaped somehow. I have to insert the male USB connection at an angle, and then push in forcefully.
Otherwise, it works well once everything is plugged in.

Works well, but is noisy
While the device itself works quite well, it does throw off lots of EM / coil whine when powered by the included wall wart. When bus powered it does make any noise. Fortunately USB 3 delivers much more bus power than USB 2 meaning low energy devices (keyboards, mice, and even a USB audio interface) can all be powered without the need for an additional power input.

Good Monoprice purchase expanding my USB 3.0 ports!
I like it! Now have cordless mouse/keyboard, flash drives and computer hard drive plugs, which frees up the two USB 3.0 ports in front of my PC. Looks good too!
