BEST ANSWER: HDMI (which is DVI + digital audio) is a data stream. DisplayPort is packetized data (like Ethernet). This is what lets you cascade multiple monitors since each is individually addressable. An optional component of the DisplayPort spec allows streaming data however it is not required. This is why some computers will work with passive adapters and some require active ones.
Now that you have a bunch of completely useless data the answer to your question is no. The DisplayPort on the monitor needs to have packetized data coming in which the HDMI port on your computer does not provide.
If the monitor has a DVI port that will work just fine with HDMI as they are electrically the same.(single link DVI)

I saw that several people had this question but no one answered, so I picked one of these up and it is not bi-directional. Your source (computer) will need to plug into the Display Port, and the target (Monitor/TV) will plug into the HDMI side. This will not work by plugging your computer into the HDMI side.

Will this cable support 2560x1440 resolution?
A shopper
on Aug 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It likely will, just not at the full speed like Display Port 1.2 (4 lanes at 5.4Gbps each). Of course, if your monitor and/or GPU DP ports are of the 1..1 spec (unlikely with modern GPU), then it's going to run at the speed of the lower spec. There's many perfectly working monitors which has a DP 1.1 port, as long as you don't plan to upgrade to a new monitor with DP 1.2 (or higher, there's DP 1.3 & 1.4 ones available now), it's OK to use this cable. But if you upgrade, then will have to purchase another expensive cable to meet the spec. DP cables tend to cost more than HDMI, especially 1.2 or higher. 2018 isn't the time to be considering the purchase of DP 1.1 or HDMI 1.4 cables.
Just keep in mind if you buy a newer monitor, you'll have to upgrade to get the best speed (DP 1.2 provides 21.6Gbps, compared to the latest HDMI, 18Gbps). You may want to research your monitor specs before purchasing a cable to ensure you're getting the right one for your need, may be of the DP 1.2 spec & you not realize it. You'd then be losing speed. There's those who says that all HDMI & DP cables are the same, well that's not true. Yes these plugs in & should get a signal, yet may be missing features, in the case of HDMI, many new monitors & TV's has HDR built in & requires the latest spec for everything to be right.
So it's not just about the resolution, am 100% sure it can 'do' 2560x1440, yet if it's a DP 1.2 capable monitor, you'll have more blur. One last thing, a DP cable should be only 2 meters or 6.6 feet. Longer than that can cause issues. Look up VESA DP specs & you'll see these things. In fact, am on here as of now & looking for a DP 1.2 cable & why I seen your question.
Good Luck, it's my hope that you're a bit more informed & please research what you have & the spec of what you're considering before adding to cart.

I have a KVM with HDMI ports and a Dell docking station for my lapotop with DP ports. I used HDMI cables and bought HDMI-DP adapters on another site ("Warrky 4K DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable, (2K 60Hz, 1080p 120Hz) Uni-Directional Display Port to HDMI Monitor Converter Compatible for HP, Dell, GPU, AMD, NVIDIA, More. Male to Female. Passive"). It works fine 99% of the time, but for every hour or so the monitors attached to my KVM blink off for a second or two. No data is lost (if it happens during a Zoom I still hear sound on the speakers attached to the KVM and they can still see my on the webcam attached to the KVM). Is it the adapters that don't work and this cable would solve it?

BEST ANSWER: My wife was having a similar issue with pretty much the same setup you are working with. Changing the laptop's refresh rate solved the issue. However the settings intermittently revert. So I have to change it back. It could be OS and or firmware updates, but I have not validated the cause. For step by step directions search the internet for "Enable Dynamic Refresh Rate on Windows" or Microsoft's support page for "Change your display refresh rate in Windows".

I had a Dynex brand HDMI to DisplayPort, was working ok for a few months, but just recently, I started getting a high pitch noise on a nearby pro audio system (rack). Through a lot of troubleshooting I determined first, that the noise was only occurring while the computer was on. And finally, I determined the noise goes away when I unplug either end of the cable. So I trashed the cable and connected a regular d-sub which isn't great. So my question -has anyone experienced any type of noise or interference caused by this cable in nearby audio systems? Thanks.

Poor build quality
Honestly it is not that great. The build quality is terrible. The cover came off the HDMI end the first time I tried to plug it in. It functions as long as I don't jostle the monitor in anyway, which actually isn't that hard. But if I want to move my monitor at all it loses connection more often than not. While my other DP to HDMI cable has none of these problems.

Solid Cable
Good quality, solid construction. Solid performance to date, providing extended capability to my 3 monitor setup.
Working great for connection from Geforce RTX 2060 to standard 27in LG IPS PC monitors.
Prices may have gone up, but as long as Monoprice maintains the quality, I'll keep coming back.
30+yr Tech, and I would buy again.
