Do these need an amplifier?

Running it on an amp (such as if your sound card has one) or using a LG V20 or V30 phone will definitely make them sound better, but even on my Samsung tablet, they do pretty good.

Are these over-ear headphones sound isolating closed style or are they open air?

They do cover your entire ear, so they will block out outside sound. I use them in a lab with plenty of fan noise, and they do a good job of reducing the ambient noise.

These are closed headphones. They clamp lightly to my head, which makes them more comfortable but perhaps less isolating than headphones that clamp more tightly. In case the comparison helps, I find them to isolate less than Beyerdynamic [DT1350 and DT1770] and Shure [SRH840] closed-back headphones, but more than any open-backed headphones I've heard. Their soundstage is above average for closed-back headphones.

I wouldn't recommend doing that. These are 32 Ohm, about 4 times higher impedance than the speaker output of a guitar amplifier. Also these are stereo and guitar output is mono. Monoprice does make a Headphone Plug-in for guitars product: 611502 = https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=611502

But without knowing the exact setup of your amp I cant' be sure - make sure you have an 1/8" or 1/4" headphone jack.

These headphones look similar to the AKG K240. Has anyone compared the two? Thanks.
A shopper
on Oct 15, 2018
BEST ANSWER: These headphones are really bass heavy, the AKG K240's are more accurate and have much better build quality. I have listened to both and it is clear that they both have increased bass and treble with less midrange, but the monoprice headphones have far more bass. I really like them for EDM, not so much for anything else. In the end it really depends what you are looking for in a pair of headphones. I'd recommend listening to both with multiple songs and keeping whatever you like more.

Yes, I have original pairs of K240/600 phones. These are not as accurate and don't have the spatial sound field you get from the 240's, but they are decent enough for general use. I wouldn't rely on them as final mastering/mixing headphones, but they sound fine.

I'm a student and I listen to music all over campus. I have been using apple earbuds since they came with my phone, but i wanna step up from that. I got the Modern Retro fit headphones thinking they would do what I needed, but quickly realized that 1) they were bulky and 2) the wire was so LONG! It was longer than I am tall. I want to ask you if they are comfortable to wear for along period of time, comfortable around the neck when I am not using my headphones, and if the cord is a manageable length?

Monoprice Modern Retro Over Ear Headphones
Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ Style Over-the-Ear Pro Headphones with Mic
BEST ANSWER: As a long-time user of the 8323 and new owner of the 16150, I went the opposite way. So far, I personally find the 8323 to be slightly lacking detail in the mids and highs and to be somewhat less comfortable for long-term wear, though these are pretty subjective criticisms. However, the 8323 is extraordinarily portable, relatively comfortable around the neck given the size - though it's easy enough to just use them with an ear cup off, they pivot and fold in many handy ways - and the cord is detachable, so if it isn't a manageable length for you, you can use any male-male 3.5mm cable and make it manageable. They're a good fit for me when listening to music while out-and-about or while working around the house - that said, they're still not truly small, these are over-the-ear headphones for everyone I've let try them.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The 16150 will have a little larger ear cups than the 8323.
The 16150 inner ear cups will have a inner diameter of 59.5mm. Where the 8323 inner ear cups will be 40mm wide and 59mm tall. I hope this helps.

How does this headphone compare to the 8323? Is this a newer model of the same headphone and is it basically the same drive with larger/different pads etc? How does this compare in Bass response and noise isolation?

BEST ANSWER: The Retros have a 50mm as does the 8323, but it has a wider frequency response range allowing for a wider range of sounds. You are also looking at a Sensitivity rating of 100dB vs 94. With a lower impedance rating for the retros you are also going to get better sound quality.

Is there a non leather version coming out?

The description indicates the earpads are split-leather. Can the manufacturer confirm if they are truly leather or rather "synthetic leather"? It may be helpful to clarify for those interested in avoiding leather.

Goood sound headphones
Comfortable if to use extra bought XL round earpieces.
Good sound good isolation.
They are not designed for wireless battery powered applications and do not have active noise cancelling. This is the reason they sound much better than expensive SONY or BOSE or Audio-Technica or Sennheiser when those are used in power off mode.
Good for static setup with wired connection, not fording, the cable is not detachable, may not be a good fit for rough environments or. travel (take a lot of space.)

Can't be beat fr the price
While not high, the sound is pretty good for the money. Still in the break in period so who knows how they will sound afterwards.

Sound good, little isolation
Sound great but I bought them to practice drums with and they just don't have enough isolation to make that possible. Otherwise great headphones for chilling out and listening to music.

Not as good as I hoped it would be. I'd like to return it for a refund.
It looks nice. A clean design and it's comfortable to wear. However it's not as loud as it should be. I compared it with two old sets I have. My Koss pro/4 A11 plus is much louder but uncomfortable. The AKG K240 is the best. Visually it's similar tp the Monoprice but with a much bigger sound and the best fidelity of the three. The Koss is the loudest but the least accurate.
I'd like to return the Monoprice if you'll pay for the shipping. It's in all the original packaging. The 3.5 mm adapter did not come with it.
