I still haven't installed these yet but, pretty much any speaker can be used for music. I can't recommend speakers to you, but these seem like a nice middle ground for the speakers I already have for my home theater.

Yes, I installed these for music only. I have HTD whole house audio system but if you just want local control, you can also use any amplifier like sonos or a wall-mounted pyle wall amplifier.

I think these would be fine for just stereo music, can’t think of any reason why not. You might want a separate sub somewhere perhaps.

I'm using the 6.5 inch ceiling speakers as surround sound for a home theater. In order to minimize sound transfer to the floor above, are there specs for building out a box in the ceiling joists and any recommendations on how to best do that and actually be successful in minimizing sound but not causing the sound quality to suffer? I saw reference in another question related to this and it said specs would be posted, but I could not locate. I know there are boxes monoprice sells but looking for another low cost solution that would assist with this.

I built boxes using rigid foam insulation, cutting a piece as wide as the joist bay, and making two cuts allowing me to "fold" down the sides next to the speakers. I attached and held everything together using spray foam insulation - I was able to do this for the speakers (as well as all my ceiling mounted lights, cans and wafers) because I had access to the attic and wanted to keep loose cellulose from the tops of them. on a ceiling between floors, you could use smaller pieces of rigid foam to build a box from the access hole for the speaker. Just be aware that these speakers are relatively "deep" and be sure to leave room for wiring access etc above the speaker depth.

I can't speak to the noise transfer to an upstairs floor however they are very directional. With them playing television sound at normal listening level while in my attic you really can't hear them much. I used roll insulation to cover when installing and that will help too. Run your wires, cut the whole, stuff that round and a piece of insulation in that whole leaving the cutout round in the attic and wire. No mess and likely minimal noise transfer. I do have a dedicated sub for low frequencies and that will make a difference too. Lower frequencies running through them will likely be heard above but very little if at all.

The best thing to do is to put insulation up into the joists above the speakers if you are finishing out your basement and have the luxury of adding this prior to putting up drywall then you are golden. Otherwise just stuff some batt insulation around the speaker.you may want to stuff a bit more along the sides running parallel with the joists. You won't be able to completely eliminate the sound but it will greatly help.

I've used some thermafider high density soundproofing insulation. I tried to stuff as much as I can with out removing lots of drywall. Theres a huge difference , but you still hear muffled sound but as bad as without. Its cost effective for 15 buck per roll you can't go wrong.

No know specs to build a box but what I’ve done is install mineral wool insulation (Safe&Sound) and i’m grabbed a large empty container of ice cream and glued it to the back of the speaker. It sounds amazing and adds good bass to it.

Not too sure about angling the woofers , but the tweeter sits off center of the woofer. I point the tweeter towards the center of the room, as close as i can get it. Not sure if it makes much difference, but it makes sense to me!

no you can't really angle anything, You can spin the whole speaker in your ceiling hole to move the tweeter a little, but probably not noticeable.

The specifications on the Alpha Ceiling Speakers 6.5-Inch Carbon Fiber 2-way say the cutout is 8.66" x 3.43" (220 x 87 mm). Shouldn't it be a round hole? If it is should I assume that it would be an 8.66" round hole?

Honestly I'm guessing, but the 3.43" could refer to how "deep" the hole must be into the ceiling. For instance, I have a bulkhead under a heating duct with insufficient depth available.

Yes. Thicker gauge wire is for lower impedance speakers that require more amps and/or longer runs. If you're installing 8ohm speakers then 16awg wire will be fine up to 50ft.

Is the woofer itself actually 6.5" as listed in the specs? Or is the entire speaker diameter roughly 6.5" (with what, I'm guessing, would be about a 4" woofer)? Because that's what it looks like from the pictures. Also, what are the tweeter and woofers crossed over at?

Maha,
The number in the description is the diameter of the woofer, so for the 6.5" that is the diameter of the woofer and the cutout for mounting is roughly 8-inch diameter. There is a cardstock circle template in the box for the cutout. I however do not know the crossover specs.
Enjoy!

I am building a 7.1 system in my basement, but don't have space for any wall speakers. I am thinking to install four of these angled to the best listening position and combine with the alpha center channel and the 8 inch alpha's without the angled drivers. Will that create a good sound, since all of the sound will be coming from the ceiling. except for the subwoofer?

BEST ANSWER: I used the 6.5 angled speakers for my L&R front channels and the standard 6.5 that have the pivoting tweeter for the Surround L&R speakers. Since the rear isn't as pivotal I feel these work great however if I was to do it over again I would use the angled driver for all speakers. Just to ensure my listening position could here them all very well at all times. If you tune your amp properly the sound will be great. Meaning, the right percentage of sound coming from the center, front and rear speakers for what your listening to/watching. They look great and sound great.

I bought these speakers for my new basement and they do sound great. I used the wall speakers for the rear channel though. having 4 ceiling speakers may sound well if positioned properly? but I am not an expert. perhaps having the rear channel (wall) speakers further forward and further out to the sides than the rear surround speakers? I am debating doing the same thing on a remodel I am later this spring. Good luck on your project.

BEST ANSWER: It depends upon how many Ohms in total you are trying to accomplish. Identical speakers in series (similar to Christmas tree lights) add up with each speaker sharing the applied power. The other method of parallel connection of speakers lowers the total resistance as seen by the driving amplifier - a far more dangerous and damaging type of connection if too many are connected in parallel improperly draws excessive current from the amplifier. This would be the best application for a 'speaker selector/impedance matching" device. Those have 'transformers' that 'upscale' each speaker's impedance so that the driving amplifier is not overloaded. The downside of those devices is the labor and wiring necessary to bring each speaker's cables back to one location - a lot of attic work!

I need to run as many as 8 speakers per zone. How do I make that happen?
- Reply
- Jonathan W on Nov 10, 2017
I just want to confirm 4 speakers can be wired to each zone(or 2 speakers per channel). Each zone has a 4ohms, 70v, or 100v wiring option. 4 of these Alpha speakers wired in parallel would be 2ohms of total impedance, which to much for the 4ohms label. I don't see a connection for both left and right channels on each zones output, so I don't understand your prior answer of "2 left 2 right per channel". Just on the input do I see left and right options. If I understand it correctly, both the left and the right channels are combined on the output. How should I connect 4 of these speakers on a zone when the label says 4ohms is the impedance? In parallel? which terminal, 4ohms, 70v, 100v?

on Nov 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: For architectural speakers, low end response will depend on how and where you're mounting them. For example are you going to install a "backerbox" behind them, if not how large is the stud/wall cavity, is there insulation in the cavity, is there any cavity at all behind the speaker (e.g. an attic space), how close are they to walls/corners? These are just rhetorical questions of course. If you're trying to avoid adding a subwoofer you'll want to go for the 8" model, but even then it's impossible to say specifically for your room and preference. If you're planning on adding a sub it's your discretion whether to go with the 6.5 or 8".

Just keeps getting better
I bought these speakers 6 years ago during a phase of doing all the things I ?couldn?t? when my ex was around. Back then I had them hooked up to the Monoprice tube integrated (predecessor to PID:16153) in my office and they did adequate duty as something I could play around with. Nothing offensive about the sound but also nothing to write a review about either. For many reasons I?ve since changed the setup several times, ultimately leaving them hooked up to the Monoprice 100W (PID:18513) for years.
Back then I did notice a change in the timbre, but I chalked it up to the amp change. All of that has changed recently, after purchasing a new integrated amp these speakers have truly reinvigorated my listening. Yes, this could be also a review for the amp, but it also shows just how neutral and dynamic these can be. They can play LOUD and still be articulate when I?m rocking out and closing the week on a Friday afternoon and they are the perfect conferencing speaker for those long conference calls when you get tired of your monitors? speakers. Mid-range is fantastic and brings a warmth that I didn?t hear in any of my sources before. There is decent low extension by themselves, but a sub helps them play in the frequencies they like best.
Pair them with the best amp your budget can sustain, and they will reward you in kind. If I could give them 10 if I would.

I used these primarily for Atmos in Ceilings and they work great. Easily fill the sound stage effortlessly and also have tweeters that can be angled. So far no complaints and the price was perfect!

Works well for Atmos
I have a 12 year old Hsu ventriloquist system. I have always been impressed with the front stage but sides and rear were weak with the small satellites. My old receiver bit the dust 3 months ago and I replaced it with a Yamaha 7850. This gave me the ability to build a 7.1.2 Atmos system. I chose the monoprice 6.5" ceiling speakers for the job. Cannot tell you how loud they are because they are used to blend into the entire system and they blend well without overpowering or distorting movies or music. The Atmos effect on my small basement theater sounds great and music sounds better than ever.
2x2 drop ceiling tile install. Used 1/4" plywood slats to reinforce strength of tile.

RR & RL home theatre
I installed these as my rear channels for my 5.1 theatre. They are roughly 9ft from the listening position with the tweeter facing said position as much as possible. For their purpose their great. Clear, bright, decent mid (they'll warm up with break in) and good quality. Pair with a good sub and you won't be disappointed. Easy instal and they look great.
