I have a wall stud dead center of where I want to mount this in the wall just below the flatscreen. Would I be able to use two putting one on each side of the stud ? Can you wire two together ?

BEST ANSWER: using two center channel speaker the way you are describing will not sound good. You will get a lot of comb-filtering (phasing) as you move through the room. Cutting and bracing the stud in question is not terribly difficult. There is a lot of instruction out there to show how to properly do it.

Yes you can, however I must admit I'VE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD A SYSTEM WITH 2 CENTER CHANNEL speakers and considering what they are typically used for when watching movies, seems like that would be a waste. I would consider using something like the Monoprice Caliber 6.5 or 8in Fiber In-Wall Speakers 3-Way (pair) as my front speakers and maybe an external center channel speaker. You can always cut that 1 stud and create a cross brace connecting the cut stud to the 2 studs on the left and right sides. The one thing to consider, is that wall a "load bearing" wall. Hope this helps!

You would not want to wire them together. If it is not a load-bearing wall and the tv is not bolted into that stud, you might be able to cut it? Another solution might be to cut the stud and put in a couple 2x4 braces just above the cut stud, screwed into the other surrounding studs. A bit of surgery though and would probably require a hole bigger than the speaker that would need to be patched.
Can you move the tv one side or the other to the stud?

I would not advise two speakers- never heard of one feed from receiver to 2 speakers.
Instead, either mount vertically, if space allows (closest to center) or else you’ll have to cut out a bigger hole to cut the stud, and possibly run two horizontal bridge 2x4’s to connect the two upright studs - in essence, building a bigger 2x4’ box to house the speaker dead center.

The single speaker is very powerful alone. The 2 might draw too much power from 1 channel causing distortion or short your receiver. Maybe a smaller round pair, one on either side of the stud would work. Good luck.

There is a zip tie on one of the components of this speaker. Should it be cut off prior to installation?
Steve
on Jul 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't think so. It has been a while since I installed these, but most speakers use zip ties to secure the crossover components to the crossover mounting board. Don't ever cut those zip ties; they are important to holding the components together. Sometimes you also see zip ties used to tidy up some of the wiring between components. Again, don't cut those. The only thing I would cut or remove would be packaging that prevents you from installing the speaker.

Do not remove the zip tie. It hold the induction wire core to the speaker body. The wound wire and the capacitors are the crossover network which blend the sound of the tweeter and woofers.

Can this speaker be mounted into a custom cabinet unit below the TV?
A shopper
on Feb 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes...I built a custom cabinet / AV wall with 2x4s overlaid with antique barn boards. Turned out incredible and I get many compliments on it. Do note, the depth of some of these speakers is a little substantial, so make sure you take into account that dimension and factor your wiring, other components, etc. when laying this out. The way I designed mine, I had originally planned on a hidden power strip internally that I could still get at, and I had to revise that location based on the depth of this one speaker because of it's location.

Yes. It is designed with 6 screws (see dark spots in the picture) that attach to plastic tabs that when rotated lock the speaker into 5/8" sheet rock. They may also work on 3/4" material of a cabinet. If not, you could remove the screws and tabs and just screw into the cabinet.

There are 4 tabs ( one at each corner) that will stick out about a ½” inch that you use a screw driver that will tighten the tabs against sheet rock or wood. So as long as those tabs have something to cinch the speaker up against then yes it will work.

I have had pioneer and Polk before my last house and I installed these carbon speakers in my loft. I'm more of an automotive audiophile so I am never satisfied with home theater no matter how much I spend and for the money these are on point. They sound great for home theater but need more fill if you want to really crank it up and listen to music at concert levels.

Can this speaker be placed behind a Projector Screen? Will there be any issues with sound If I do?
Rajesh B
on Jun 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is a really good question. My understanding is that it depends entirely on the screen you are talking about. Some screens are "acoustically transparent". The name suggests that as far as sound goes, the screen lets sound through. The name suggests that there is no alteration to the sound, however not all acoustically transparent screens are created equal. Do some research on the screen before purchase. Acoustically transparent screens generally have a perforated appearance because tiny holes are needed to adequately let the sound through. Some people don't like the visual effect that the tiny holes produce. Not all screens have the same size holes, or hole pattern both of which will affect the picture quality. Seating distance from the screen will also affect how noticeable the holes are. Also consider that acoustically transparent screens cost considerably more than regular screens. I would NOT recommend placing a regular screen in front of the speakers because the sound quality will be noticeably degraded. I hope this helps.

The answer to this depends not on the speaker, but on the screen. Some screens are perforated and designed to be somewhat "acoustically transparent," a relative term. But, if your screen is not a perforated screen, then putting speakers behind it is a very bad idea. It will have a very negative effect on the sound. It will sound muffled and the highs will be significantly rolled off.

Specifications seem identical to the Alpha in-wall center at 100w, 5.25" carbon woofers, 1" silk tweeters, 70hz-20khz, but with the adjustable angle. It doesn't seem to have the narrow bezel of the Alpha line. I have an above fireplace TV and I'm looking for an angled in-ceiling center. Can anyone else comment on using this successfully as an above TV angled center channel?

Monoprice Alpha Ceiling Speaker Dual 5.25in Carbon Fiber Surround 2-way Vari-Angled (single)
BEST ANSWER: I'm using this in that same scenario. It works well but does have a very narrow 'sweet spot'. Viewing/listening from in front of the TV and the angled direction of the speaker works very well, but it is not as great off to the sides, where a standard center channel would work better. I would suggest a narrow center channel sitting on a mantel if that would work, but this would suffice if that would not work.

I am currently using the Alpha Vari-Angled ceiling speaker as a center channel speaker in my home theater system and it’s working very well. I’ve had this set-up in place for approximately 18 months and I am very pleased with the speakers performance. It has handled everything thrown at it without fail or issue. If I ever need to build another system, I will use this as a center channel speaker again.

it will certainly work in that application, but I expect placing it in the ceiling will be a disappointment. Even if angled (And you have space in your ceiling at the required location) it will not be facing the listener sufficiently. That is so important on a center channel.

In the horizontal orientation, will it fit between wall studs that are of the standard spacing?
Mike R.

BEST ANSWER: It depends on the stud spacing in the wall you are installing it in. The standard stud spacing in the US is 16" on center. Subtract the width of one stud 1 1/2" and you get 14 1/2" cavity spacing. The cutout width of this speaker claims 13.31". So it will fit in a standard spaced stud wall.

The cutout width is 13.31", however the given overall width is 14.7". The extra width is for the clamps used to hold it behind the sheetrock. I have not yet installed it. IF it is an option to have the clamps swing vertical instead of horizontal, it seams it would. However, if they swing out and clamp parallel with the floor, it may not.

Hi Dave - it seems you have all the answers regarding the Amber ribbon speakers. Are there any more details you can provide on the upcoming ribbon in-wall and ceiling line? I am mostly interested in dimensions. I have contractors finishing my basement and I getting close to needing to run low voltage and I have already purchased Alpha speakers (13683, 13616, 13618) for my home theater and would like to replace them with these ribbon speakers when they become available - can't wait until October to install though. I have depth limitations for the rear surrounds (3.5" total clearance) which is why I had to get the 6.5" alphas. My concern is that I don't want to have a larger hole in my wall than what the ribbon will need.
On another note, does anyone use these speakers (15700) as left front and right front speakers? I want to get these but am concerned they will overpower the alphas I will be using everywhere else. It would be great to know all the dimensions (depth included) of the upcoming ribbon speakers so that I can make sure I future proof my setup and have my contractors allow for them. Thanks!

This is speaker ranks 8.6 out of 10. Voice is clear and I love the bass I get from this speaker when I listen to music through it. I will buy it back from you if you don't like it!!!!!

What is the minimum required wall depth for the Alpha 6.5" and Alpha Center? I'm seeing some reviews on Amazon stating that a standard 2x4 wall cavity is not deep enough.

No. It is a center channel only.
you need a separate left and right speaker placed in the wall at the center height of your TV screen.

Are the Vas, fs and Qts correct on this? I ran the numbers using an online calculator and get a sealed box that's almost 10 cubic feet and that seems a bit large. When I ran the numbers on the Alpha In-Wall 8", I got a more reasonable number of roughly 1 cubic foot.

Great Center Speaker
This speaker was easy to install and sounds very good. It does need to be broken in before it sounds it's best. I really like the adjustable tweeter and option to paint cover to match wall.

Insane value and sound...
Bought this for my media room 7.2 system, and ended up using a stand alone MP Center speaker instead. I sold this to a friend setting up his finished basement tv room and it kicks some serious ass with the rest of his set-up.

Great center speaker
I bought this because the other version was out of stock. I love how the center grill is magnetic and pops in and out easily. I don't know why this isn't specified clearly, but prior to purchasing I had the hardest time determining if the tweeter adjusts or is fixed. For the record, the tweeter adjusts and I have mine mounted above my wall tv. The range of adjustment is exactly the same or slightly less than all the other wall speakers. Sitting from my couch, I cannot localize the location of the speaker as being above the TV. Voices seem to come directly from the TV itself. Definitely do NOT mount it below the TV if possible. Highly recommended
YES, the center tweeter can be adjusted. Hope this helps someone on the fence.

Great speaker!
Watching movies and playing games with this center and the matching LCR and in ceiling makes it so enjoyable! This sounds way better than my Polk center that cost around $250.

Great looking and pretty good sound for an amazing price!
These are pretty nice. I had to run two centers since I have a stud directly in the middle of my fireplace mantle, and rather than doing more wood work, considering the low price, I just bought two and straddled the stud. The sound is good overall. They do not exactly match the sound of the Alpha 6.5, but are pretty close. They seem to have a little resonance that creates almost an echo effect on voices though. I sealed the back side of the wall and have tried running them in parallel and in series, but I still cannot get the sound just right. Not as nice as my B&W center, but at 1/10th the price and beautifully mounted in the wall, Id say you cant beat them.

Good speaker - Attachment terrible
Speakers sound and look good. Magnet cover sits flush, a great look. However, the dogears are terrible, broke two in the install process.

Clear voice projection
I have enjoyed this center speaker immensely. This speaker is installed behind a perforated screen (therefore no photo attached) my last center speaker was hard for me to hear speech on some movies. This speaker has totally resolved this issue. It is part of a 7.2 system and voices are clear and understandable even though it is behind a perforated screen. I would recommend this speaker.

This is not just a speaker that relays sound. But this speaker relays feel. You can feel the sound as well as hear it. I am very happy with this purchase.
