Unless it is a bi-directional, this is a DisplayPort to HDMI only. It is not a bidirectional type.

BEST ANSWER: When you say that your desktop has DisplayPort, is that an input or an output? A typical desktop computer does not have video inputs (the required circuitry is expensive and most users don’t need a video input).
Connecting the video OUTput of your laptop to the video OUTput of your desktop won’t work... and HDMI vs. DisplayPort is not the biggest part of the problem.
BUT, perhaps you mean to connect your laptop to your desktop MONITOR? In that case, this adapter still won’t work. It’s the opposite of the adapter you need. This is a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. It allows the output of a DisplayPort source to be connected to an HDMI input such as on a TV or monitor. You want to take HDMI output to a DisplayPort input. Adapters for this are available.
The important thing to know here is that any adaption between HDMI and DisplayPort is necessarily directional.

I have a freesync capable monitor, can I use freesync over HDMI with this cable?

BEST ANSWER: Should work. Depending on the frame rate you're trying to achieve at 4K, I would be more concerned about having an adequate HDMI cable. HDMI 2.0 up should suffice.

BEST ANSWER: No. Mini Display Port is used on a variety of hardware. You need to check which one your hardware uses to know which one you need. Mini is square while Full Size is oblong like in this picture.

I'm dealing with an annoying monitor to dock conversion issue, and I'm hoping this is the correct answer to it. I have two 1080p 75hz monitors with hdmi output ports. My dock only has USB C and DisplayPort inputs. Could I use this to plug into the hdmi port on the monitor and then use a DisplayPort cable from this to the dock?

It works great. I wish it had worked the first time I connected it, but that could be my setup, and not a limitation of the adapter.
I have mine connected to my video card (EVGA RTX 2080 Super). It is then connected by HDMI to my Denon AVR-X6300H, which is connected to my 2014 Samsung 4K TV UN60HU8550 (8 bit non HDR). I purchased this adapter because the Insignia adapter I purchased at Best Buy started giving me a ?No Signal? message when I would switch my AV Receiver to the PC input. I first purchased a Cable Matters adapter from Amazon first that actually costs more than this one. Not long after I started using the CM adapter, I started experiencing sporadic picture loss. I?m still not sure if this was the adapter or a temporary issue with my PC. That is the main reason I purchased this one. I was disappointed when I first connected the Monoprice adapter, because I got a ?No Signal? message. I unplugged and replugged the HDMI and DP adapter several times (which would usually remedy the Insignia adapter), but it did nothing. I reconnected the CM adapter and got a picture, and then swapped it out for the Monoprice adapter. It worked. The Monoprice adapter has been working for over 24 hours with several reboots and turning the receiver and TV off and back on. II hope this continues to work for me. In case anyone is curious... The reason I am using the adapter is because I have to connect my Oculus Rift to the HDMI port of my video card, and need video to the monitor (TV) at the same time. I will say that putting a receiver between the PC and monitor with an adapter for HDMI is a tricky endeavor at best. I am a cable technician and run into HDMI issues on customer?s TVs regularly. I just want to say that I am not at all surprised that I have had difficulty getting this to work. It is working though, and that?s the point.
