Can two of the in wall controls be placed in a double gang box or do they need to be separate?
Ian M
on Nov 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I ended up cutting two holes and using two low voltage single gang drywall rings. The controllers are definitely wider than you standard outlet but not by much. I don't see why not. Best bet, a dual gang switch cover runs about a dollar. If they fit side by side in the face plate, start cutting. Cheaper than patching the drywall.

The controller has RCAs, 3.5mm, and a SPIDF. Any of those would work as a source input to the controller out of your receiver's amp pre-out - for example if you had a bluray player or cable box connected to the receiver and wanted to power the speakers using the controller. If you want to go the other way, your receiver powering the speakers but being controlled by this unit, use the RCA pre-outs on the controller to go into the receiver.

Absolutely! Each zone is independent so it does not really matter how many zones you use. You will just be leaving 2 zones on the table, but at this price point it's probably a great option for a 4-zone system. FYI: mine's been in for several months now and it's working beautifully.

Can any input be sent to all outputs? And does each output zone have its own volume control?
A shopper
on Dec 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes - each zone (output) lets you choose which of the 6 sources it plays, and at what volume (and a few other things like basic EQ) via it's own control pad, which is actually the only way to select these things out of the box. Each pad controls only the zone it's set to and nothing else - so there isn't a "send to all outputs" command or really anything to be done from the amp itself. But yeah, fully matrix-able so any routing you want, so long as you set it up from the control pads

Yes, any input can indeed be sent to any of the output zones. Each output zone can independently select which input (source) it is listening to at any given time. Additionally each output zone does indeed have local volume control either on the local keypad or through automation if you go that route. It is straightforward enough once you have it installed and in place.

While I understand the challenges of installing the wired controllers, I cannot guarantee that you'll be completely successful in controlling the device without them. The app, while functional, is third party. It is well done, and has been updated, but exists in the public domain outside of Monoprice control.

Yes, you need at least one source of input - though you may quickly realize you’ll want more than that - up to the six that it accommodates. If you have music on your phone or iPad you can Bluetooth it to a Bluetooth receiver (or to an Amazon/Google device that can also work as a BT receiver) that is plugged into the amp or purchase a WiFi receiver that works in conjunction with an app. You can use audio outputs on your tv, turntable, old school receiver, etc. it’s just a matter of running the wires to one of the 6 source inputs from any desired device.

With those options the possibilities are for inputs are varied. Personally, I have am Amazon Echo Dot ( through which I stream Sirius satellite radio or Pandora radio) , a Google Chromecast (which allows me to stream anything on YouTube, among others) , a cablle TV box, and a turntable.

This will distribute audio produced by other devices across its six output zones, and those audio sources can be selected independently in any zone. But since this does not produce audio itself you will need to provide those audio sources separately. These could be stereo receivers, chromecast audio, mp3 player, PC/Mac... (i.e. most any device with an audio output can be used as an input source.)

Yes, you need some device to send the signal to be amplified by the Monoprice. It can be anything that you can connect with an RCA jack style audio cable, a 3.5mm stereo cable (e.g. headphone jack connector), or a digital optical cable. RCA jacks are probably the most common and you can connect up to four to the Monoprice.

You can connect multiple units together in a primary / secondary model. I think 3 units max for a total of 18 zones.

I have a 2 post rack from monoprice. The amp does sag a bit on the backside. It's been in the rack for about 6 months now. I'm in the telecom industry and I see this on a daily basis, I wouldn't worry about extra support.

Can this unit play multiple inputs to varying outposts at the same time?
A shopper
on Feb 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. There are 6 inputs, which can each play to their own output simultaneously. Additionally, using the keypads, you can customize which speaker zones carry which input, so any of the inputs can be playing to any number of speaker zones at the same time.
Ex 1: input 1 can play to speaker zone 1, input 2 to zone 2, ..., input 6 to speaker zone 6.
Ex 2: input 1 could be set to play to speaker 1and 2, input 2 could play to 3,4, and 5, and a third input could play to the final speaker zone.

It’s a 6x6 matrix. You can choose from any of six sources in any/all of the six rooms (zones) you connect to it. However, your outpost’s might be a problem if the cable run for the keypad is more than 75ft. My understanding is that it’s intended to be used in a single building, as opposed to multiple buildings on a property.

I personally just used an Amazon Alexa & plugged it straight into the 3.5mm port provided on controller & it works fabulously. The cable spans 75’ as well. Can just tell Alexa on, what music to play, what volume and so on! Can also just connect to Alexa via Bluetooth & play out of my music library from a phone or tablet. Hope this helps & Good Luck!

You may need software, it depends on what you are using it for. I will tell you how I have it hooked up in my house. I bought the following items: 1) Global Cache RS232, 2) Global Cache iTach Flex IP, and 3) Monoprice Whole Home Audio Control (Android App). With this configuration, it allows me to wirelessly turn on any of my zones in the house and stream music to it. Search for that app, and the developer for that app has some good youtube videos on how to do this.

There is an iOS app in the App Store - "Monoprice Whole Home Audio" from that I have been using for a year with good results. With this app, you don't even need to install the individual room controls as you can control all zones in the app and you can have the app on multiple phones/iPads. It does require adding an "Ethernet to Serial" component to your system to allow your iPhone/iPad to communicate with the audio controller, but it works well in my experience.

Input 1 can be used as a paging (all zones) input or a party mode (all zones) input. When a source is connected to input 1 and 12VDC is applied to the PA-IN jack, source 1 will be broadcast in all zones. Other than the aforementioned scenario, you have to go to each zone and control them individually. While I have not tried it, you might be able to set the zone specific dip switches to the same configuration for multiple zones, and that may achieve 'central control' for multiple zones, but it would all be the same input source.

Thank you! That was a very helpful response.
I have one additional question. The fact that the system only puts out 50w per channel (I assume that means only 25w per speaker) I am fearfull that it is under powered.
Most of my listening is casual background noise but if the situation arises I want to be able to crank it up and have a party too.
What has your experience been with the power level?

Enter an answer to this questionThe amps in this unit are pretty efficient and deliver power when paired with decent speakers and 12 gauge speaker wire. I have the monoprice 4104s in ceiling and have no problem cranking it up. It helps to have the speakers installed in ceiling enclosures to improve efficiency and sound delivery. Hook up a monoprice 8248 powered sub and add to the quality and loudness with the ability to have more options for tone control

BEST ANSWER: This is the same situation I faced when installing it, and I wasn't able to do so (though I'm not very technically sound). Since you can have multiple audio sources to choose from, you need a way to select which audio source you wish to play from, and the speaker wouldn't play with just the previously wired volume control since it could not select an audio source.
If your pre-wiring includes the CAT5 cable at the same spots where you have the volume control knobs, then it's an easy transition. Just connect the wires attached to the control knob together (i.e., connect the wires from-the-receiver-to-the-control-knob with correlating wires from-the-control-knob-to-the-speaker) using wire nuts, and then replace your current control knob with the Monoprice control panel.
If your house is not pre-wired with CAT5 for the control panel, then you can just buy some and have the control panel's in a central location near your receiver, in which case you SHOULD be able to utilize your existing volume control knobs.
Lastly, it's possible to control the entire receiver via a smartphone APP, but that requires some extra gear which I have not set up yet. If you do this, then everything can be controlled on your phone, and you don't really need the volume knobs or the control panels. Hope this helps.

You will not be able to use it without some modification. Each switch needs a Cat5E wire to connect it. If your volume controls have that (unlikely), you can change out to a Cat5e 8 pin connector at each end and use it.
Otherwise, you should look to an amplified system that allows individual end-of-line volume controls.

If you are going to use the key pads you are going to need cat 5/6 wire run out to where the volume control knobs are. The keypads fit in a single gang box. I was lucky that my house had the correct wires already run and the system really works great.

Can anyone provide specific instructions around how this unit is used with bridging functions? Each zone has a "bridge" switch - but does it bridge it with the "next" zone or the "prior" zone? What connectivity is required in terms of inputs to two (or more) zones that have been bridged? Are speakers connected across the zones? Does a single keypad control a zone that has been bridged?
The manual doesn't cover much about bridging things....

In stereo mode the 4 opening will accommodate the + and - for the left and right speakers assigned to that zone. This is a 6-zone amp but is it is a 12 channel amp (6 stereo zones = 12ch). If you look real close or download the manual (page 4) you will see underneath the Euro Blocks it show you your wiring diagram; R -,+ L -,+, under that it says Bridge with the far left opening for the - and the far right for the + of you bridge connection. Be sure to only use 1 8Ω speaker for bridged operation as using multiple 8Ω speakers will damage the amp.

Bridging is a term that is used to describe a joining, in this case, of the left and right amplifiers of the single zone in order to more power to a single speaker. I will also give you a mono singal if this is needed as opossed to stereo.
If you want to join multiple zones that is done through the key pads by simply choosing the same source on each keypad (location) that you want to hear that source in.
Hope this helps you. I've used several of these units. Great bang for your buck.

Bridging refers to the left and right channels being bridged. It does not bridge anything across channel numbers. There should be a picture indicating how to wire the left and right channels in bridge mode. Typically in bridge mode either the left audio channel is usedoing or the two channels are blended into a mono stream.

Hi Darin
Bridging an amplifier summs the two (stereo left, right) channels into one, more powerful mono channel. It does not link the zones in any way.

Bridging bridges L & R of a single channel. Bridging does not let you bridge adjacent channels, just L & R of the same channel.

I understand what bridging is. I'm asking:
Zone 1 and Zone 2 have bridged and non-bridged dip switches.
If you set Zone 1 to "bridge" does that bridge it with zone 2?
There is a keypad zone control. Does keypad 1 control the bridged channel (zone 1) or do you need keypad 2 also?

There is a new Android app available from the Google Play Store for $4.99. It requires the purchase of a Wi-Fi to Serial interface. The developer specifies which interfaces will work and is working on a lower cost hardware alternative. This app works really well. There is another app for Apple devices that I have not used. I am thinking about getting a basic Android pad w/Wi-Fi and configuring it with this new app and other apps for control of all my devices. The pad then becomes my very capable dedicated remote control for television, receiver, and my Monoprice multi-zone amplifiers. leaving my phone charged and ready for travel.

How is the sound output? I've already bought alpha series ceiling speakers to go with my yet to be determined whole home audio system.
The amplifier power output seems very low.
Does this amplifier have enough power to do these alpha speakers justice?
Also looking at HTD mc-66 with a separate amplifier

Hi! Let’s just say I never leave feedback or answer questions, but on this one I’m so impressed with the multiroom controller I wanted to take the time to say don’t hesitate on this one. I’m not exactly an audiophile, but I have some experience & I know what I like to hear & how I like it to sound & for the $ & flexibility this is absolutely the right choice! This control box has no problem driving a pair of 20yo (Polk rt55’s) that the experts back in the day said were the best, but hard to drive. Will also note, on extended play at fairly load volume, the controller doesn’t get anything much more that warm to the touch. You won’t be disappointed! I will also note, look for it to be on sale at mono price. Good luck!

I had a low voltage guy install it do to new construction
He was responsible for the Tv's as well
For now sounds great. Only one problem I have not
Checked 6 zones yes but 4 analog inputs ? 2 optical digital
So 1 zone " TV" I designated for music channel
I can play that in all the other rooms
For sound quality and price you can't beat it.

Hi. I think that the amount of amp output is largely dependent on listening style. If, for instance, you're trying to drive HipHop loud, then you might consider bridging two outputs on this amp. If, however, you're just trying to listen to music at even the higher range of home audio, then you should be fine. Mine drives two 8 inch outdoor loudspeakers well enough to annoy the neighbors at about 75 yards away:-)

I have installed this unit in multiple customer homes and I have to say for the price you get your money's worth out of it. The volume is loud and I even bridge a few zones and it worked just fine. The only deference in the higher end models is better wall keypads and better interfaces with third party devices. I highly recommend installing google audio with this unit to cast music.

Here's what I want to do. Please tell me how. :-)
Run whole house audio with 6 zones in the house with 2 ceiling speakers each (any recommendations?!) + 2 zones inside with 4 ceiling speakers each. Then I want to run an outside zone with an additional 8 speakers (and REALLY want to include at least 1 if not 2 underground subs) and THEN bring the sound to my barn that will have 1 more zone but will include around 10 wall or ceiling speakers (again recommendations please).
A) is this even possible with this system (or multiples of this system)
B) How would the wiring diagram look for this project?
I'm willing to send a $100 via PayPal if anyone can help! :-)

BEST ANSWER: So.
6 Zones inside with 2spkr each
2 Zones inside with 4spkr each
1 Zone outside with 8spkr + 2 subs
1 Zone to barn with 10spkr
You will need 2x 10761 linked. This gives you a 6x12 set-up.
6zones with 6 13683 Alpha 8", good sound, no subwoofer required
2zones with 4 13684 Alpha 6.5", 10761 amp can run 4 spkr per channel
Outside with 2 31034 Sycamore system w/ 2 more 31037 Satellites. You should run a bigger amp for these, I like 18514, puts 200W into each system.
The barn will also need more amps. I would look at how nuch power and what the vibe is for the space. Look at our Unity amps (450W, 200W, 100W) and Alpha speakers.
Hope that makes sense to you.

In order to run more than 6 independent zones you will need 2 of these.
In order to run your subs you will need a "Monoprice SWA-200 200-watt Subwoofer Amp with Crossover and Phase Control" https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=31030.
Another option is to mirror a couple of the zones. Each zone is amplified through this Amp but there is also a line out where you can hook up an optional amp for more power/speakers. I have 4 speakers running through 1 output bridged and it is plenty of power for the 4 speakers.

Thank you Dave! I'm looking to make the barn vibe one that can be turned up and have a lot of sound (probably add a sub here as well). It's a 30x60' barn that will be a workout gym/ pickleball court - but I do like to listen to my music loud! :-) I'd look to add 10 8in Alphas into the ceiling and that sub. What amp(s) do I need to have out there to power everything? Apologies for my ignorance. Also, each zone is going to need to be a Cat6 run plus individual speaker wire to each speaker from the 10761 correct?

You want to get two of these amplifiers (giving you 12 amps (24 speakers)) and run the second one as a "slave" to the first.
The amp is not particularly powerful, so if you care about the sound quality/volumn I would not recommend running more than 2 speakers per amp/zone. Either use a second zone, which can be annoying because they are controlled separately, or use the pre-amp out on the zone to power additional speakers for that zone.

This amp only lets you have 2 speakers per zone. You can add more zones with another amp to make it easier. I'm sure there's a way to do what you want with this amp but there's only so much power this amp has. I would recommend buying 2 or 3 of these to run all your speakers. System is great and simple to hook up. For the price you won;t find anything better. Good luck

I currently have an outdated Speakercraft MZC 66 running six zones in my house, it is working fine now but as most know the MZC 66 is prone to issues as it ages so I am considering replacement. The keypads are all run using cat5e, so from what I can tell this would be a fairly simple conversion, almost plug and play...does this sound about right? Also, do you happen to have an app that can control the zones in addition to the keypads?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Dan. I installed this kit last fall (2019) after having run Cat-6 as part of my basement build-out. I would think as long as your cable connections are working fine, your Cat-5e should work as well. The kit comes with a hand held remote control with a pretty long range (it has worked for me in 10-15 foot spans with a line of sight). I don't know of any app to control the zones. It does allow for the plug-in of 3.5mm IR receiver cables (stick the pads to your equipment IR locations). Supposedly, you can then use your equipment compatible remotes (or a programmed universal remote) at the keypads to control your sources connected to the controller. I say supposedly, because I have not done that yet. I have an old CD player with one slot connected to the controller, so I have to go there to change discs. I purchased a 2ch inexpensive audio receiver (4-source inputs + phono for a turntable) with Bluetooth connectivity. Got it mainly for the Bluetooth, so I can push music from my iPhone or later from an MP3 source. I can walk anywhere and push music from my phone and conveniently control output at each keypad. Hope this helps.

Hi Dan. Yes! This would be plug and play for you!
There is a part that you would need to buy on a DIFFERENT online store. You need the “iTach Flex”. Make sure to also buy the correct connection wire. If I remember correctly, it is the RS232 serial cable. Other 9 pin serial cords will fit, but they won’t work. The app is $5 on android, and $10 on iPhone. Youtube will have all the videos you need for setup.

The keypads communicate via Ethernet to an Ethernet hub that connects to the controller. Cat5E should be sufficient so you shouldn't have to change out your cabling. Unfortunately, this controller doesn't have an app. The most "remote" connectivity it has is via an IR remote controller. High end zone controllers from like HTD has an app, but the price difference is considerable.

BEST ANSWER: You shouldn't have much of a problem, however unshielded ethernet cables can produce small amounts of RF interference that normally aren't detected by most of the devices in your house, but might get picked up by your speakers if you run your speaker wires right beside the ethernet cable. If you have the same pathway but almost 2 separate pathways, you should be fine.

I had no issues using the same chase on doing the exact thing on expanding my system to the basement. You will run the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet splitter to your wall controller and the speaker wire from the unit to speakers. Hope that helps

No need for that, We ran ours parallel to each other and have had no issues at all with any crosstalk. I did use Cat6 cable instead of the Cat5e. FYI, you will love this setup... We use it in a automotive workshop daily and have no issues at all

Do you mean, can you run the ethernet and speaker cables in the same bundle or chase?...of course.. they are all low voltage, and all the signaling is isolated to just the amp.

Everything is low voltage so you shouldnt have any issues running it together. I ran mine in the same chase to the basement and havent experienced any issues.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, you don’t have to install keypads to use this product. However there are two other ways to use this. Either with the included IR remote control or with iTach Flex IP module ( then you can control it over a paid app ($10) or thru a browser on the same network. Sesrch for this device on Amazon.

No you must use the keypad to power and control a zone. There is no smart phone App for this product and you would have no way of controlling any features. You could install an RF extender and use the included remote to control a keypad from a different room in the house. The remote has a very dated appearance though

Not manually, you will need some way to control the unit via RS232 - so you will control it through whatever control system you are using - ie. I control mine via Home Assistant, I do not use the keypads.

BEST ANSWER: The main device plugs into one wall plate (the one with the one Ethernet Jack on front) via Ethernet. That wall plate breaks out to the other Ethernet jacks on the back, which you can then connect to all of the the keypads via a Jack on the rear of each

There should be 7 keypads. One for each zone and one with 6 connections in the back. The one with 6 connections is jacked into the amp. Make sure that each zone’s controller has its dip switches set according to manual.

That keypad input, on its back had 6xethernet inputs into which you connect the ethernet cables from the wall keypads. The ethernet input on the front is what you use to connect it to the amplifier.

BEST ANSWER: Dear user, the cat6 runs for the keypad hub uses a different protocol to that of your standard home network. You will have to run a spare cat6 for the keypads.
Also, as the Manuel says no crossover, you can ether use all A type configuration or all B type. As long as you don’t cross it. So you B configuration will still work, just don’t run it to you home switch/router.

There is a separate cat-5 switch that you plug the 6 cat-5 keypads into and then there is a single output from that switch that goes in to the receiver. You can mount the cat-5 switch in single gang box for a cleaner setup. Good luck

The sources connect into a "central hub wall plate" that you end up installing into you wall near the amp. From the hub, you then run a CAT 5/6 cable to the back of the amp

Tested it and everything works as promised. Did notice some slight sound "bleedover: when I selected a source next to the source the radio was connected to - a little odd. Wish it had a few more optical connection options for sources.

Great for basic multi room controller
Bought this to replace a 6 zone NRC amp which failed. Fidelity and power not as good, but works adequately. Havent figured out if there are any wireless control options but it works well manually with what is provided. The Remote control logic is taking awhile to figure out. If the ethernet wiring had been installed(the NRC used the Niles app so only speaker wired was installed previousl) the remote room control would be great.

Response from Monoprice
Hey there, thanks for the review of the Controller and Amplifier Kit! I'm glad to hear that it's working adequately for you, even though the fidelity and power are not as good as your previous NRC amp.
I know you're looking for wireless control options for this kit, and unfortunately, we don't currently offer any. However, I'm hopeful that we'll be able to add wireless control options to future versions of this kit.
In the meantime, I hope you'll be able to figure out the logic of the remote control. It can be a bit tricky at first, but it's worth it once you get the hang of it.
If you have any questions about the Controller and Amplifier Kit, please don't hesitate to contact us by accessing: www.monoprice.com/help?pn=contact. One of our representatives will be glad to assist you. Thank you!

This system is incredible. Works like a charm. Great sound, easy to install and use.

Good Amp and easy install
Bought this multizone amp to replace my JBL system. What a big difference. This amp is so superior and its great to have bass and high end options in each zone.. It was very easy to setup. Its worth the money especially if you get it when its on sale.

Great value, a few bugs
I don't think you can beat this for the value, I got it on sale for a great price, so I gave it four stars. But, I was considering just three stars, there are a few annoying bugs / issues to be aware of, and the fact that I spent HOURS troubleshooting it.
First - Powering off each zone sucks, you have to hold the button for about six seconds. The remote helps, but. There should be a faster way.
Second - I ran into a weird bug when I hooked up my fourth zone. The blue LED came on for the keypad but it wouldn't power on, it also made up some of the other keypads malfunction. I spent HOURS trouble-shooting, and even re-ran my CAT6 cable through the attic (which turned out to be fine). Eventually I sent the unit back for a replacement. I believe it had something to do with the length of the run for the fourth zone. If I used a shorter cable, it worked fine. If I used a longer cable, it ALSO worked fine. Additionally, if I hooked up the fifth & sixth zones, it all worked fine. There was something buggy with just four zones and the exact length of CAT6 cable of that fourth zone. The return was a huge hassle, and it took weeks to get my replacement, so I just didn't bother testing to see if it malfunctioned with four zones when I got the new one. I suspect it would.
Third - I have a 50' RCA cable to zone 5 where It's hooked up to my Onkyo amplifier for my home theater. I get a massive amount of hum from the speakers when the RCA cable is plugged in, and it even bleeds into the zone 4 speakers. I fixed it with a device that converts the RCA cable to an optical cable that I then plug into the receiver, but the audio quality seems poor with this workaround. I suspect I'll end up just not using zone 5 much.
