    MHD 2.0 Action Camera - 1080p

Capture all the action with this MHD 2.0 Action Camera from Monoprice!

This camera boasts a full, high-definition 1920x1080p resolution with 24-bit color depth at 30 frames per second. It can also be set to capture at the lower 1280x960p with 30 fps, 1280x720p with 60 fps, and 1280x720p with 30 fps. It features an ultra-wide 170° field of view, so you can really get up close and personal with your shots.

The camera is waterproof to depths up to 10 meters without a separate outer enclosure. It is also shock, dust, and freeze proof, all features that are necessary in an extreme sports action camera. A waterproof microphone allows you to capture the entire audio/video experience. A gyroscopic sensor rotates the image to compensate for different mounting options. Unlike other cameras that can only orient to 0 or 180° mounting positions, this camera can orient to 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°. The orientation change is done when recording starts and is then locked, so you won't get orientation changes while during recording.

The camera weighs only 4.6 ounces and measures 4.3" long, 1.5" wide, and 1.6" high. It comes with a mounting bracket and can also be mounted onto a standard 1/4"x20 threaded mount, giving you maximum flexibility in how you use it.

A one-touch slide switch is used to start and stop recordings. The switch is about 1.2" long by 0.5" wide, so you can easily start and stop a recording without having to remove your gloves.

A locking and removable cap on the rear of the unit gives access to the resolution selection switch (FHD or HD), the hardware reset button, the micro-SD card slot, which can accommodate a card up to 32GB size, the mini-B USB port for charging and data sync, and a mini HDMI® port for direct video output to an HDTV. The internal battery has sufficient charge to allow up to 2.5 hours of continuous recording.

In addition to being used as a video camera, the MHD Action Camera is also a 5 megapixel still camera. A large button on the top of the unit is used to snap pictures in Single Photo, Burst, and Time Lapse modes with 24-bit color depth.

The camera has plug and play operation and is automatically recognized as a storage device by Windows® and Mac® computers. Integrated software can be installed to a Mac or Windows PC to allow access to the internal settings. The software is compatible with Windows XP SP3 or later or Mac OS X® 10.5 or later.

Note: Windows Media Player sometimes has trouble reading the audio stream of the .MOV files created by this camera. If you experience trouble, try installing and using the Apple® QuickTime® Player or the freeware VLC Media Player instead.

    IMPORTANT NOTES:

    1. A memory card is REQUIRED for operation.
    2. A memory card is NOT included.

    Software missing in action

Pros: Small size, price, buttons and tactile feedback good for use while wearing gloves

Cons: Unable to find required software to set modes.
No response to customer support query.

The camera itself seems to work as advertised.
However, the "pre-installed" actionplus software, which is required to set modes on the camera, is nowhere to be found. Per the instructions, once you add the MicroSD card, connect the camera to the PC, and turn it on, the "actionplus.exe" software is supposed to show up (presumably it's in the camera firmware and is downloaded to the SD card), but nothing found. The SD card shows up as removable storage, but the camera doesn't show up at all (I'm running Windows 10). There doesn't appear to be anywhere to download the actionplus software that I've been able to find.
I will revisit this review if I can get some help locating the required software.

    Hello,

My apologies for the trouble experienced when attempting to install the software. We unfortunately do not have a direct link to download it. However, please try the steps below after copying and saving any needed information from the card and it should fix the issue:

First, while the camera is connected and powered on, please press the "windows" key and the "E" key on your keyboard to bring up your devices with removable storage. Locate the name of your micro SD card, right-click it and select "format". For file system, use the drop down box and select FAT32. Then, click "restore device defaults" and hit "start". Allow the formatting to complete, disconnect the action camera, then power it off. Next, power the camera back on on and reconnect it to your computer. Please wait a few moments while the device is recognized and click "open folder to view files" when prompted. Finally, please run the setting_win file to install the software.

Please let me know if you run into any issues and I would be happy to assist you further. Thank you for your feedback and I hope this helps!

Pros: Low cost, good video resolution, many options for mounting at a reasonable cost.

Cons: Audio Volume is really low.

The audio auto volume balance results in very little audio. I have to have the volume all the way up on any sound setting and on the speaker to be able to even tell if there is any audio. I wish there were a way to set the audio record level manually or increase the sound quality

    Hello,

Thank you for your review on PID 12179. Truly sorry to hear about the audio issues experienced with this camera. I see that you have had this camera for a few months. If I may ask, has this been an issue since it was first received? Is the audio low even when the camera is close to the source of sound? Can we try playing the video files on a different media player? When testing, please ensure the volume within the program itself is turned up. Please let me know your results from there and thank you in advance!

    Gabby,

Yes this has been this way since new. I actually have four of these cameras and all share the same problem. By close to the source I will tell you that I use two of them as dash cams and they barely pick up any conversation from the driver or passenger and the same if I am playing the stereo. There is no audio available if using Windows Media Player in the original format. There is faint audio if using a different media player and the same faint audio even if converted to the MPEG or MP4 formats.

    Hi Joel,

I truly apologize for the delayed response. Unfortunately, Windows Media Player has trouble reading the audio stream of .MOV files created by this camera. If possible, can we try viewing the recorded video through VLC Media Player instead? Also, what was the other media player tried that outputted the faint audio? Sorry again for the wait and thank you for your patience.

    Great Action Camera!

    Pros: Light Weight
    Decent Video
Lots of Mounting Options (with additional kit)
    Easy to Use

    Cons: Needs External Microphone Jack
    Short Recording Time (2.5 hours)

I bought this camera to use as a helmet cam for when I ride my motorcycle. The first one I got overheated immediately upon use and killed it's battery. The RMA process was super easy though and I was quickly using the new one. I have had no issues with the replacement camera. It takes good video, decent audio, and is super easy to use.

I mounted on my helmet with the accessory mount kit available through Monoprice. The video looks nice but there is a bit of wind noise. Not too bad, you can still hear things that are going on, but there is a constant background wind noise. An external mic that I could place in my helmet would be perfect.

Note though that this is an action camera, not a dash cam. It does not delete and overwrite old files, when it gets full it stops recording. For what I use it for it is not a problem. Each morning I charge it up and delete any files on it. If I had a file with interesting footage (such as below), I'll save it to upload later.

As to the short recording time, I am looking to see if it's possible to record while the USB charging cord is plugged in. 2.5 hours is plenty for my daily drive to and from work, but if I go on a day trip or overnight trip I could use quite a few more hours.

Pros: Very good image quality and stability
    Simple controls
    Decent options

    Cons: No looping/overwrite of files
    Buzzing during time series photos
    Limit of 32GB storage
Small extra copy of each file

Very good image quality and stability. Simple controls make it easy to use in a hurry, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to remember how it works. Can't really use as a dashcam because it can't loop over older files to keep recording. Two biggest gripes for me are the small extra copy of each video that is created (to facilitate "sharing") which can't be turned off, and when used for time series photography the "buzz" when each image is taken can eventually misalign the image when a mount is used or even shake it off a surface if it is just set down without a mount.

    Functionally Illogical

    Pros: Cheap
    Light

    Cons: Operation is illogical

I have so many problems with this camera, and none of them have anything to do with the quality of the camera lens and sensor itself. I bought the camera, because I wanted to use it as an HDMI output web-cam with an HDMI capture card.

There are several problems with this however. Firstly, the hdmi output only outputs at 1080 you cant have the preview window by 720, no matter what settings you have. Secondly, the output itself is interlaced. Why? If it was 1080p, it would be fine but 1080i? What year is this?

Then there is a problem with the operation of the camera itself. There is only one button, and two switches on this camera. What do the button and switches do? Well it depends... what cables do you have plugged into the camera, is the camera on or off when you push the buttons? The instruction manual only outlines what the button/switches do when the camera is free. But if you have the hdmi cable plugged into it, the functions of these buttons change and the manual doesn't state what they do.

When plugged in, the switch changes the operation between photo capture mode and video capture mode. The button changes the selection of the on screen display. There is no off switch when its plugged into an HDMI cable. Secondly, I mentioned the on screen display and how the button changes the selection... but... how do you actually SELECT the current option? I've had it randomly select the current option even when I wasn't pushing any buttons. Meanwhile, if the OSD is on the screen, none of the switches do anything.

This camera was designed by a crazy person.

    Hi Jaxel,

You would navigate with the camera button as seen on the top above the "Rec" LED light. One press of the button will move the cursor, two presses will confirm the selection.
