Can this control multiple devices or does it need splitters or something to get the IR to different components in the cabinet?
A shopper
on Nov 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can control multiple devices. However, if you have multiple devices in a closed cabinet you may need another IR blaster to distribute the signal. Also the IR plugs into the side of the HDMI and may block an adjacent HDMI on the rear of an AV receiver as it did on mine. I had to purchase a right angle adapter.

You'll need a splitter unless you have enough space to set the transmitter away from the components to send the signal to all units.

One adapter connected with the HDMI output (Jack to be connected at this adapter) and same thing (HDMI input) for another one. Like indicated, don't forget to switch at "IR" position for both of adapters.

Does this require another source to be on the HDMI cable (such as DVD-->TV), or can I use extra cables to run this?

BEST ANSWER: If I understand you correctly, yes, you would need a source device on one end and the tv on the other.
The allows you to control the source device (dvd or cable box) without it being in view of the remote control.

BEST ANSWER: Are you sure the remote is not set to bluetooth or RF in the settings? New fios cable boxes have bluetooth remotes. I use these with the older remotes that are IR only. One quick check is to open your camera app on the phone and face it towards the top of your remote as If you plan to take a picture of it. press a button on the remote like channel up and see if you can see the IR coming out of the top of the remote.

The only thing I can think of is that you have to have the IR positioned just right for the DVR to pick up signal.. I have mine taped right on top of the IR location on DVR

I purchased this and it seems to work very well except (and this is a big except!) when everything is off, it doesn't seem to send the signal. I assume this is because no power is being supplied to the HDMI ports on either end until the system is powered up. Is this the case and what do people do to circumvent this very big issue?

BEST ANSWER: A dual band IR works but you need one that works with your equipment. None of the dual band IR I bought worked with a Comcast box. I contacted Comcast and they provided an IR extender that worked.
The final setup that worked is using a Comcast IR extender on the receiver side and a 3.5mm Stereo Plug/Plug M/M Cable product #644 https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=644 on the sender side that plugs directly into the cable box.

I was able to get this to function wiring a IR kit I found on Amazon that covers both bands.
Only wiring difference is that that the Amazon emitters are 2 wire and the receiver is 2 wire with a USB supply. The dongle style extender has 5 Vdc, Signal, Gnd, so I just made a couple 3 wire to 2 wire 3.5mm patch cables (omitting the 5 Vdc - I likely would have been able to remove the USB connection and tie the power in I suppose). This works great now.
However, I was NOT able to make this work at all with the Wall Plate style extenders (https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8008). The signal does not pass properly, so I'm presuming this is a hardware limitation in the board circuitry.
Hopefully Monoprice updates the design or comes out with a proper Dual Band solution as these are such a great product when they work!

I am using a Blackbird 2:1 splitter from my cable box to two tv’s. One close and one far. The splitter works just fine To both when the IR repeater is not inserted, however, when I insert the IR repeater in line with the longer run ( via red mere) the splitter does not send a signal through it to the tv that is further away. The splitter then shows no power LED to one of its outputs? But again, as soon as the IR module is removed, both Tv’s get signal just fine? Thoughts?

Works Perfectly
This worked just as advertised. I have one device upstairs. The other device is downstairs via a 50 foot run over ethernet using the Monoprice HDMI extenders. The remote works seamlessly; no hassle with unwired devices that used to work sporadically and not always well.
A totally successful way to connect 2 devices!

Great product
The only reason this did not get a 5 star is that it interferes with the volume and on off. We have a Visio TV and Dish Network remote. All the equipment is in a cabinet beneath the TV. Before the device we could not control the satellite at all. No channel changes etc. (unless we opened the cabinet door). Now we have full control of all the satellite features. But because this device is interfering with the signa to the TV itself, we just can't change the volume or turn TV on or off now. Unless we are within 4 feet of the TV. No big deal. Still better than the original problem.

IR repeater that really works
This IR repeater over HDMI works great. I have a cable box in the Den and a television on an enclosed deck. An HDMI cable from the cable box through the wall to the television provides the signal. Operating the box from the deck saves getting a separate box for the deck. It really works and it doesnt affect the quality of the video signal.
