The unit has small terminals that require small gauge wire to be installed and tightened with a small flat blade screw driver. Please note that this unit cannot handle large gauge wires or high power output from the amp.

All of the terminals, input and output are screw-type for bare wire. Relatively easy to work with. Unscrew the very small screw, insert the wire into the terminal and tighten the screw.

It will work fine with your in-wall speakers. If you have more than four pairs of speakers, you should look for a box with more outputs. If there are volume controls in the wall for the speakers, you can use a box without volume controls.

Monoprice 8-Channel Speaker Selector
That's exactly what I did. I used the A channel on my Sony to one box and the B channel to the other. I used the A channel on the boxes but you could use either. The volume control works great with speakers having different efficiencys. It is a killer setup and well worth the extra money. They replaced a pair of Radio Shack splitters without volume control. I used a label maker to get larger print to identify the stations. When our house was under constrution the builder laid lamp cord from each of the rooms in which the speakers were to be located to a cabinet containing the amplifier. You just have to be careful about identifying the wires. Hope this helps.

I have four speakers at 6 ohms each. I want to wire them together as one zone and use a Sonos Connect Amp, which doesn't recommend less than 8 ohms per speaker, to power the speakers. Can I use this product for that application? Will it protect the Sonos Connect Amp?
Jorge F
on Jul 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this will be no problem. This unit has load leveling, meaning you can hook up multiple speakers and the amp will still have an 8ohm load on it. With 4 speakers, you would only need a 2 channel unit if you wanted, as each zone is in pairs(stereo). For both pairs of speakers to play the Sonos source, you would just select the same input on the selector.

I would look at monoprice part # 9995 instead. If you don’t need the separate volume controls I’d save the $$$. I will do the impedance matching and protect the connect amp. It will also give you the ability to toggle individual pairs of speakers on/off. Or leave them all on together.

Had it been working or was it not working from the beginning. I'm assuming you have checked the position of the A/B switch. Also checked that no wire had come loose from the back connectors for that set of speakers. If not there is no fuse inside the box. It is possible that there is a poor solder connection. I have found that in a box from another company.

I don't think there is a fuse, but you would have to ask Monoprice. I assume you have made sure the switch is pushed in. If you have not done so, you could swap zone 3 with another zone to see the problem is with the speaker selector.

I will have 2 ceiling speakers in the rear of the family room that I want to double as rear channel speakers for movies and stereo speakers for music. So for this application I would need 4 inputs to the MSV-4 switch (two from the rear channel connections and two from the B Speaker input.) Additionally, we will have 2 speakers in the kitchen (which is next to the family room) that we will use for music as well. So if we can connect the B speaker input to connect to MSV-4 and switch both the family room rears and the kitchen island speakers on at the same time (assuming impedence matching) then the MSV-4 is the product we need? Please let me know. I wish your website had a schematic (didn't see one.)

Yes, this switcher will accommodate your needs to switch two sources. Source A for connection with your surround receiver for movies. Source B for connection with a stereo amplifier (can be the same receiver if needed) for music.
The MSV-4 is impedance matching so no problems for your amplifiers. Remember, you may need to switch off the kitchen speakers when watching a movie. Both sets of speakers are always connected to the source you select.

100 watts is the "nominal" rating, meaning this is the average between peaks and continuous (RMS). None of this really matters for this switcher. Unless you are using a commercial or pro amplifier, you will be fine. A receiver such as Denon, Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer, etc will not be a problem. It is a robust design and will work great in home (consumer) applications.

Zone 1 works great, but the same speakers plugged into zones 2-4 are not nearly as loud. Is this as-designed or does my selector have a defect?

I'd like to use this for mono ceiling speakers. Is it possible to bridge each channel to power 4 mono speakers?
Jamie Q
on Jun 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Mono is left channel, just use left channel only. Im not aware of the internal circuitry, but attempting to bridge could cause a change in the resistance overheating your amp.

U probably can but u will need to use a “jumper” wire to connect to, due to the small size of the terminals on the back of the unit

It is impedance marching so I would assume it wouldn’t work for 70v setups.

I have one of these it works great. I have 3 zones connected currently but have a single speaker in a basement washroom. Can I bridge the 4th zone to get mono for that speaker?
Matt C
on Aug 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, bridge selection needs to happen at the amp, usually a dedicated switch. You'll need a dummy load for the other channel.

What are the decibel steps of the volume controls...or are they infinite?
A shopper
on Sep 13, 2020
They are infinite -
But.. It all depends on the amplifier output into the 4 channel control. We set ours at 12 or 1 o’clock and use the main amplifier remote control.

Is the master volume maintained when switching sources? I'm trying to set up my system so when going from one source to the other one doesnt come in blasting loud
A shopper
on Jul 27, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This device does not control a master volume between the two sources. Each source volume is independent and determined by the source output before being input into this controller. This unit works very well but does not have internal circuitry to moderate a consistent input between sources.

I think it really depends on the source output. I only purchased this because of the volume controls, I just use source A.

Is 14AWG adequate for long runs between rooms? I currently have two rooms and an amp in each (one is movie room, one is LP listening room) and I want to combine both amps with this and output to three or four rooms.

Pleasantly Surprised
Is this thing actually making my system sound better? I've heard that switches can potentially adversely affect sound quality. My experience with this unit is quite the opposite. Very impressed with the sound and construction. The connection points are challenging to work with, but not nearly as bad as other reviewers make it out to be. One note: for some reason, when the zone knobs are dialed all the way up, right channel sound disappears on each zone. This is only at the absolute highest setting, which you probably should not be doing anyways.

Monoprice Dual Source 4-Channel A/B Speaker Selector w/ Volume Control is what I have been looking for and that it surpassed my expectations on what it would be like and how it would function. I clearly endorse this item and will gladly encourage others to by it.

Nice works great, wish it had LED indicators
Works great. I wish each channel had it had 2 LEDs - one that indicates if the speaker is on or not, and another that indicates if the input channel is A or B. It would then also be nice to have a button that could turn on or off all LED indicators as well, so it could still be dark if required.
