With Analog (VGA) input does the converter strip the analog signal or is the output a DVI-I that continues to carry the original data? Basically can I convert a VGA source, run it through a digital (DVI-I) KVM and connect back to a analog projector?
...the likely issue, I've since discovered, is that my video card on my HP 8460p will not support a resolution greater than 1280 x 800 on my Dell 3007 monitor. I purchased a docking station for my laptop and it works but at a less than optimal resolution.
I was trying to connect an analog (VGA) out on my Elitebook 8460p with an old Dell monitor (3007) that only has a DVI-D input. I don't think this was a product failure - I was warned that it may not work. Seemed like a good quality product - just not for my application.

Works perfectly. I needed this to feed the VGA from a server into a modern DVI-D style of KVM switch. Worked first try, no issues. Seems compatible with all of the normal video modes and follows them just fine as the Linux server switches from text to framebuffer to X11.
I use it for 1920x1200x60Hz to a 25.5" ASUS monitor. Quality through the adapter is slightly better than VGA directly to the monitor was, probably due to the much shorter VGA cable that this makes possible.
Did not use the included 1.2m cable purchased a shorter 18" cable from monoprice at the same time, to keep the analog signal path as short as possible. Once it passes through the converter, it's all digital, so cable lengths on the output side don't really matter (within reason).
Excellent product, but pricey.
PROS: Just plug it in and it works. Same kind of circuitry as found inside most digital displays with VGA inputs. Handles video mode switching just like any monitor would. No fuss. Sturdy metal case.
CONS: Expensive. Very expensive. Included PSU is an old-style power hungry transformer type. Ugh. This _is_ 2011, folks.
