Yes. Simply plug your speaker cable (not instrument) into one of the 8 ohm speaker jacks. The labeling on the back of this amp is a bit confusing, it will be either one of the left jacks as you look at it from the back, and then the other end into either of the jacks on the back of the cabinet. Do this before you power on your amp; never run a tube amp without a load, ie. speaker cabinet plugged in.

Does the Standby switch need to be in the On position on your unit to get any volume? What is the purpose for this switch?
James R
on Oct 9, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The standby switch is common on tube amps - it cuts off the amp to the speakers so the amp doesn't have to be turned off. The switch has to be up on this amp to get volume to the speakers. This is labeled as "on" but I would thin it should be labeled "off" as this position turns off the standby, but turns on the speakers!

This is an all tube amplifier, the standby switch is to allow the circuit to warm up without sending signal through it. You will need to turn the standby switch on to play through the amplifier. I would recommend you turn the master power on without standby for 1-2 minutes every time you turn on the amp, and then leave it on standby a similar amount when you're powering off.

The standby switch allows you to turn the amp on and warm up the tubes before you play. When you are playing you can use the standby switch to shut off the output of the amp without turning it off completely. One of my favorite features of this amp. I hope that helps.

I'm asking why it says "On" in the up position and why it needs to be "On" in order for the amp to function. I find this confusing. Thank you for the help.
Think of it this way. .. The power switch controls the electricity going into the amplier from the power cord, and the standby switch turns on guitar signal going into the speaker. You need to turn on the electricity first (power), and then turn on the output to the speaker (standby). Keeping the power on and the standby switch off allows you to tune your guitar ar adjust your pedals or unplug your guitar without having to adjust the master volume control to turn down the volume. You can set all of your knobs where you want them and then use the standby switch to shut off the guitar signal going to the speaker while the amp is still on. I have was taught that letting the tubes in the amplifier warm up before playing is a good idea.
The most wear on your tubes is when you turn the amp on. The stand-by switch allows you to take a break during your gig by muting the amp without shutting it completely off, prolonging the life of your tubes.

Standby switch allows tubes to warm up while putting amp in the muted stage. I always turn standby on first then the on switch. After amp is warmed up and standby is off the amp is then audible.

Its not worth the chance it has two 16 ohm output and one 8 ohm output. You could destroy your your speakers or both. If you have a 4 ohm speaker get a 2 speaker cab and put in another 4 ohm spkr wha-la you have a 8 ohm set up.

BEST ANSWER: I own a Peavey Classic 20 head. It has EL84 power tubes like Vox AC types or a Fender Blues Junior. This amp uses 6L6 power tubes which have a more American sound. More bass and less bright. Many Fender amps use 6L6. Usually takes more volume to break up into a distorted sound.

Do they make this tube amp for Bass or will this one work for Bass ?
A shopper
on Dec 24, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Ok, any amp head or any amplifier can be used on bass or guitar. The trick is to use a BASS SPEAKER made for bass guitar. They are constructed differently and can handle the low frequencies. Also required ohms must match. Any amp will work as long as you keep the volume down, as to not cause the speaker to distort. All this info can be found on u-Tube. good luck.

This one is not intended for Bass and when I first received the SB20, I measured the low-end frequency response and it drops off rapidly below the low E on a standard 6-string guitar. It looks like the output transformer is not intended to support an Electric Bass.

BEST ANSWER: There is no headphone out on this amp. You'd need some type of attenuator with a headphone jack. This is a wonderful amp. I'm seriously considering a second one.

How do you adjust the bias? If power tubes need changing how do ypu adjust the bias?
A shopper
on Jul 29, 2022
BEST ANSWER: bias is adjusted internally in the chasis there is a slotted screw that increases or decreases bias but if you use the same value tubes that are in it in the power section you shouldnt have to adjust and you would need a meter to read how hot or cold the tubes are running get used to seeing the color of the power tubes when the amp is running then if you have tochange tubes and thats more of a want then a need the brightness or dimness of the tube and how it sounds will tell you wether they are runningtoo hot or not hot enough in any event if that becomes a problem let an amp tech play around with the insides also before you go poking around make sure the standby is off and let the amp sit 24 to 48 hours so you know for sure the electricity has bled off as amps asthe transformer and capacitors still retain enough power to electrocute you after its off

Good morning, what are the differences between 30 watt Stage Right #611898 & the Stage Right SB20 50 watt #625914? Please advise
New User U
on Jan 26, 2021
BEST ANSWER: 30 watt uses 4xEL84 output tubes which, if like the 15 watt, have midfrequency punch and bright top end. Bass response will be tight but not so deep.
50 watt uses 2x6L6 output tubes for smoother low mids and deeper bottom end. Probably more clean headroom.
This is speculation from experience with other amps with these configurations.

Hello. What does the model SB20 stand for?
Also, who really builds/makes this amp? I really, really like it. I've owned it for about a week now and am very curious. The price, sound, and build quality is very impressive.

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for the question! I haven't used the line out yet, but I am amazed how good this amp sounds!
I would love to see an EL34 version of the SB20 (SB34?) and possibly an EL34 powered 100w version (SB100?). I know Monoprice would do well wither either.

Can you plug in a preamp pedal to the EFFECTS RETURN jack and bypass the preamp in the head? For example, I have a Tech21 Liverpool pedal I would like to use as a preamp. Can I just plug that directly into the EFFECTS RETURN on the amp? Will it cause any problems? Thanks..

BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can do that, but the main amp section is always at full power and the preamp is what controls your volume. So when using a pedal like you are then the pedal will become the volume control. Hope this is helpful.

I bought this amp 4 months ago and I believe one of the Jj 6L6 tubes is going bad. On the distortion channel the volume will drop suddenly and then return to normal gradually. Also the bass/ low end is much stronger on the clean channel. I figured I’d just replace both tubes with a new matched set. I have watched many amp reviews and thought I would like to try a set of JJ EL34’s but do t know if they will work. Does anyone know for certain if they will work in this amp? Has anybody tried it? I’m assuming it’s one of the two larger power tubes because the volume drop only happens on the distortion channel and one of the tubes has a lot more dark soot at the top of the tube than the other. Seems like 4 months of light use shouldn’t have caused a tube to wear out so soon but there were several times I left the amp in Standby for hours at a time. Any owners or Monoprice techs out there that know about this ?

I’ve spent many hours learning about tubes and tube amps since I asked that question and I think you’re right and so did Monoprice. They replaced the amp under warranty. If indeed a tube was causing the problem it would more likely be one of the preamp tubes. The tech support guy Cyrus was very helpful in solving the problem by replacing the amp but I don’t think I’ll ever know what was the real issue.
Thanks

I use it in my Gigs and its an amazing amp
It's really hard to find a dependable all tube amp for less than 500 bucks...no seriously it is. I play this amp through a WGS 200W 12 inch 8 ohm speaker mounted on to an Avatar 1X12 cabinet. In addition I also run the amp through 4x10 Avatar cab with two 10F150 weber speakers and two 10F150T weber speakers(each speaker is 50W, 10 inch, 8 ohm). My primary guitars are the solid body ESP EC-1000 LTD Deluxe (Seymour Duncan JB and 59 pickups) ) and the hollow body Peerless Renaissance Custom.

she runs really quiet
No hum! This is the quietest tube amp I've ever had; I got right on the speaker in my first 24 hours burn-in and could barely hear the slightest of hum. No hum from 3 feet away! Great clean tones, with real bass, solid midrange and sparkling chime trebles. Significant variation in tone control of each channel; it's like playing two different amps. Big bass tones with my one 15 BW sealed speaker enclosure on baritone guitar. However, I would like more wet reverb (like my Fender Super Reverb); I'll try swapping out with another reverb tank. Probably not best for metal, but that is in the province of pedals anyway. Mine was on-sale and didn't come with the JJ tubes pictured on-the-web, but they were 6L6 power tubes and ran oh-so-quiet.

You absolutely can't go wrong on this amp at this price point. I have played on it for a month now and have let my other amps sit idle. Been a player for 35+ years and can't recommend it enough.

Great Amp Especially when on sale
Got this amp and didnt expect much... wow I was pleasently surprised at the tone of this monster!!!! It has a great clean channel for my pedals and I think the drive side sounds amazing as well. Seems like the negative reviews on here expect perfection which you wont find with any one amp. It fits my style and I think will work for many genres, but to each his own.

Well worth the price
This is a very nice amp for the price. The clean channel is fantastic, and the drive channel is solid. It reminds me a lot of silverface amps. Takes pedals really well, so if you get your dirt from pedals you will be extremely pleased. Is it capable of modern high gain....not really, but everything from country to hard rock and old school metal are in there.
