How does it zoom?
A shopper
on May 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: First, remember it's a wash, not a spot. However, it does an okay job at zooming. We are using a few of these about 35 feet up to backwash a church stage. It can be zoomed in to isolate one singer.

The front panel of focus lens will move back and forth to zoom the LEDs mounted behind it. This is done via a DMX channel / stepper motor. In auto mode, it will do it randomly based on settings.

Not to terrible. However there is a ring of light that shines when the lens is all the way out. Probably gets down to a 5 ft circle depending on your distance

I need a profile for this fixture in either 12ch or 16ch for GrandMa2. Can one be made?
A shopper
on Apr 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: One can be made but you will have to go through the MA lighting website to have them build one or build one off of their specs. I built one that worked for my LSC lighting board and then LSC took it and tweaked it a little to make it function better.

I have made profiles for the Elation Show Designer and the ETC Colorsource as well. I would think if you had a profile creation program to go with the GrandMa that you could make the profile easily.

Can this unit be wall mounted?
Ian B
on Mar 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Sort of. Because of the way the mounting plate attaches to the fixture, you would need to space the plate off of the wall in order to give clearance to the ¼ turn tabs so you can properly actuate the plate to the fixture. The mount is designed to be attached to a C clamp or some sort of truss clamp. If you want to mount completely horizontally, you would need to pack out the wall where the bottom feet are to keep the fixture level. I would also strongly recommend against going into anything that isn’t sufficiently solid. A traditional stud wouldn’t really provide sufficient strength for the lateral stress

Can this light be truss mounted? If so, where are the mounting points located?
Edward K
on Jul 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Has the fairly conventional u-bracket mount that fastens via thumbscrews to threaded inserts on the bottom of the fixture. Looks a little lightweight, so you'll want to be double-certain to safety cable this fixture up. Also the hole on the bracket is likely going to be too small for whatever clamp bolt you want to use, so you'll have to drill.

Too loud; beam too soft
The fans are too loud for a theatre. I will probably make the choice to forgo the warranty and change out the fans.
The main problem for me is that the tight focus, when used as a beam, has a lot of soft halos - out to at least 45 degrees. I know this isn't a spot fixture, but I expected a cleaner beam. Perhaps it does well in haze, but for a refocusable special, this is not my light.

Lots of bang for the bucks
For the price, these are pretty kick-ass fixtures. Only complaints I have is that they are 3pin not 5pin (personal choice - prefer 5pin gear) and the fans are loud. Otherwise, great fixture.

Good for the Price but stopped working after a year.
I purchased 4 of these 1 year and 4 months ago. Recently one stopped working and I discovered it was the fuse that was blown. Unfortunately, it will blow the fuse immediately as soon as I try to power it on.
I contacted Monoprice (because in the past they have been good about these types of things), and they said they would get back to me after they talk to a manager. I will update this review when I see if they were able to help me or not.
Besides the one not working, the others seem to be working just fine. The fan is a little loud but in my venue its hard to tell they are on when people are here.

Hit or Miss
These seem to be hit or miss. When they work, they work well. The fans are loud, but not a deal breaker. Out of the seven purchased, one had zoom issues, and two blew fuses as soon as powered on. One of the fuse holders disintegrated when removing it from the unit.

Big Light, Little Money
So far, so good with these high-value movers. Four units in our theater for almost a year without issues. Zoom is a major plus. Yes, they are noisy. There are 3 fans, 2 in the base and 1 one in the head. Inserted a voltage regulator to reduce fan motor voltage from 24v to 12v, and have reduced noise appreciably, without any noticeable heating.
