it comes with a foot switch input jack but no foot switch. I tried to ask customer service and they became very cagey about an answer saying it might mislead people? What's going on? The jack on the back of the cabinet says fs1 so if they don't offer one they should at least recommend one. It must have been designed for one! I tried two different NEEWER switches but neither worked. I'll have to keep trying. The neewer had a nice little light. Any suggestions?

No, mine didn't, but any on/off switch with a 1/4 inch jack works and they are very inexpensive.
I own Vintage Marshalls, Traynors and hi-end boutique amps, and now 2 of these for playing in true stereo. Very sparkly 3-D sound you can only get with tubes.

The Amp has an input for a foot switch but does not come with one. You can purchase a Fender single button foot switch from Amazon that will work well. Also, the Fender Blues Jr. Amp covers fit perfectly.

It probably uses a simple on/off momentary contact switch - very cheap and easy to make.

I see that there is no "standby". Do you need to wait for the tubes to warm up before they work?
A shopper
on Mar 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You always have to wait for tunes to warm up. the standby switch doesn't have anything to do with that. The standby switch takes the tubes out of the signal path so that you can change guitars or something with any "popping" when you pull out the patch.
This is a great amp. Great value. I have several name brand amps. This one keeps up with them pretty well. Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Tubes do need time to 'warm up' to sound good. I normally wait for a couple minutes at least before plugging my guitar in. Also you will notice no sound for 30 seconds when you first power on. Not a problem as tubes need to heat up to start working.

Yes. Please note, however, that you would have to wait for the tubes to warm up with or without a standby switch. Once warmed up, you can go in and out of "standby" on an amp "with" a standby switch, without waiting for the tubes to warm up again.

True, and yes you do need to wait for the tubes to warm up, and the need to warm up gradually is important. I can't be certain but I think there is an internal circuit the allows the tubes to receive power incrementally.

Yes . . . Tubes need at least 30 seconds to warm up enough to function. 12AX7s and EL84s, being small tubes, warm up quickly so not having a standby circuit is not an inconvenience.

It's only set up to run on 110v. The power cord is not removable and there's no selector for different voltages on the back. The only way you might be able to get it to run out of a 220 volt supply would be to use a Variac, or get a new power transformer rated for your country, but that would almost cost as much as the amp itself. Hope I was helpful. :)

My son also plays bass, and I, too, tried to start him out on a starter amp that didn't do the trick. I traded him up to a 50W solid state amp - and that was JUST enough for him to practice with one other guitar and drums. I personally use the 15W Monoprice amp with a five-piece band and have NO TROUBLE keeping up with the other instruments (I play lead guitar), BUT, I wouldn't try to use this particular amp for a bass guitar. I do not think the circuitry will serve the bassist in any way that would be satisfactory, or long lasting! I would recommend a used Gallien-Krueger of some sort, or something similar!

This is my first tube amp. I play guitar through it, and I've got to say, it is very nice. For bass, it works. I just tried it and of course keep the gain down, but don't expect anything more than bedroom practice. But guitar, I think it could handle it's own on a club stage easily, and sound pretty sweet. For the price...for the options...for the quality of build and components...definently a winner. I wish I has started out with an amp like this 30 years ago when I started playing. Hope that helps.

For bass, no probably not. Bass frequencies require significantly more power than the mid frequency registers that the guitar typically occupies. While this amp is practice worthy for guitar, it likely wouldn’t solve your son’s issues on bass. For the most part, modern bass amps are often solid state, either completely but generally at least for the power amp, because solid state circuitry can produce the 200-2000w more reliably and efficiently that full size bass amps tend to need to be heard.

"keeping Up" is really relative to what he's trying to keep up with. This little gem will not be heard much above a loud drummer. But on a church stage, miked up to a PA it would be great, or in a small venue such as a coffee shop or even a small fellow ship hall (40 people) it would do fine. This also depends on the type of music to be played. The amp will be much louder if driven, that is to say with the gain cranked up :) It'll be louder than any 50 Watt solid state amp for sure. Good luck

It is an excellent sounding amp for a guitar. I don't know how well a bass guitar would sound through it. I'm probably the exception but the first amp failed after eight months of bedroom use. Monoprice did pay the shipping both ways on the replacement. Now the replacement has failed after about six weeks. I have not contacted them yet on it. They have a one-year warranty. A great sounding amp, but I can't speak for the quality.

I wouldn't hesitate to use this amp for double-duty guitar/bass practice at home -- in fact, I do just that. I also use it for bass in the studio. I would NOT use it for practice with a band, And I wouldn't let an electric bass anywhere near it on-stage. Fifteen watts is usually more than enough for guitar, but pushing it that hard with a bass will be asking for trouble. (thinking more about the speaker than the amp itself...)

I can't comment on this for bass, as I do not play that, but this is a fine starter to intermediate instrument for guitar. The 1W to 15W flexibility is a great feature, The tone is nice and warm and the reverb is a good spring reverb. The speaker is in amps 2 to 3 times the price. All my fellow players who try it come away impressed. You cannot go wrong for the price as you note.

I just checked my monoprice amp and it does the same thing. In my experience this is not normal for a guitar amp (I own 4 other amps and none of them operate this way). My guess is it’s a cost cutting way to insure the resistance load (ohms) is correct for the amp? There’s probably away to modify this but I’m not sure how.
You also should know that there is a fuse on this amp that is in the chassis and if it blows you have to take the chassis out and replace the fuse. I actually had an amp tech move the fuse access to the back of the chassis but that mod cost almost as much as the
Amp. I paid for it because I like the sound of the amp.

Yes, it is normal. Tube amps are sensitive to the speaker loads hooked up to them, so to keep it simple, many amps are wired to drop out the internal speaker when you use an extension.

Yes, it's one of my favorite amps (I have several, including Fender and Marshall). It's my main amp for playing out because its relatively light (easy to transport), sounds great (it sounds REALLY good plugged into an external speaker cabinet) and it's quite loud (definitely loud enough!).
I just wish it had 2- channels.
If you're not in a hurry, wait for it to go on sale. I think I paid just over $200.
Good luck.

Mine indicates 16 ohms. There is a plug for an external 8-16 ohm cabinet. I am very pleased with this amp: it sounds great and it is both bedroom quiet and can be switched to 15 watts loud enough for band practice. Great classic rock tones.

What does the tone knob do?
A shopper
on Jan 19, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The Tone knob does some VERY SUBTLE roll off/on of the highs. Don’t expect a huge swing in tone. But I have to say it adjusts just the amount the amp wants. I have seven amps from high-end boutique Italian to Mesa Rectoverb and Fenders and this little amp is now my favorite because it works so well with all my guitars. I use it on a clean setting and use a pedalboard for all my effects. This amp worked great for rehearsals with a live drummer. GREAT AMP!!

Not a whole lot. I do notice a slight increase in higher frequencies when turned full right, and a slight muting of the higher frequencies when turned full left. Sort of fine tuning of the overall EQ'ing using the bass, middle, and treble knobs. I did replace the no-name tubes with JJ EL84's and JJ 12AX7's. That helped the tone considerably.

It is an overall tone. All the way to the right the high ends are accentuated all the way to the left below end. You can also called a high-end cut like on a box amp. Also it could act almost as a presence knob. Enter an answer to this question.

Its kind of like a "presence" control you would find on some other amps. Its exactly as it implies, just an overall control almost like..brightness, but not a treble response. I keep mine at about 6, but that's just my preference.

As I understand it from the manual, you still adjust the bass middle and treble to your satisfaction and the tone knob is kind of a volume for the tones. I hope this helps and maybe monoprice could improve the manual.

The tone knob controls the amount of treble and bass added to the sound. The 12oclock position is neutral. Turned to the right increases treble, turned to the left of noon adds bass and reduces treble to the sound.

When the “Tone” knob is set at “5”, the tone is considered “flat”. Turn the knob clockwise to “brighten” the sound with higher frequencies, turn the knob clockwise to “darken” the sound with lower frequencies.

It is for USA 115-120 volt application. Just buy a european power strip converter to use in Europe and you'll be fine. I just played a theater gig in Atlanta with this on the 1 w setting through a vintage Marshall 4x10 cab. sounds sparkly, clean and excellent string definition. I'm not affiliated with the maker. Just giving you a heads up I get compliments on a strat or LP plugged directly into it. Been playing since 1980 in bands.

Can I get a good clean tone from this amp?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: Yes you can, in my opinion. Keep in mind this is a real, 100% tube amp so it will always have a "tube character" sound. It is a really good amp for the price actually. Great for blues, classic rock, alt pop and such. But if you are looking for "crystal clear tone", or play amplified acoustic, I'd suggest to get a high power (100 watts) solid state amp, that would give you plenty of headroom for really clean tones.

Of course any tone is subjective. When I think clean I think of a fender twin reverb I had which would not distort until ear bleeding levels. This amp has a reasonable clean in my opinion but not comparable to the twin. Here is a video I made where I try to get as clean as possible using a Fender Strat and then I try out a few other tones. https://youtu.be/tu7xCNPAVjE

A lot of differing opinions here. But having owned many amps that people are mentioning (including this one). I would say it’s a Fender Blues Jr clone almost. Same EL84 power section as well. You can replace the first preamp tube with something different like a 5751 to give it a little more headroom before breakup if you want. That’s how I have it arranged. Sounds great. VERY fenderesque

It's actually very close to a Laney Cub. My understanding is that the circuit is pretty much dead on... it just has a larger speaker. Laney's are very English influenced, so Marshall leaning. The overdrive is a bit more airy than thick syrupy. The cleans are very good, but different than a normal Fender sparkle clean. Overall I highly recommend this little powerhouse of an amp.

The tone stack is from a Marshall JCM800, with a smaller power amp attached. Overall it's not a direct clone of a Marshall, but it's definitely that flavor. If you want to listen to samples on Youtube, search for Laney Cub 12R reviews, there are quite a few. It's identical internally (down to the markings on the PCB), except for the reverb..

Also FYI they could have used a better way of mounting the board that the speaker is on to the outer cabinet. You might want to put in a size larger screws. Overall it's a really good deal - an all-tube amp with a 12" speaker for $200.00.

Where is this amp made?

BEST ANSWER: Hello. I hope i can answer in a manner to address any reservations you may have. I'm not certain but I think it is assembled in China but what would you expect and why would you care? Monoprice has an excellent reputation for customer support. In fact there's a YouTube review from a man in Australia whose Monoprice 1/15, 1x12 Combo arrived with shipping damage to the case. Monoprice didnt ship just a case. They replaced the amp AND didn't require he ship the damaged one back. So reliability? Check!
Performance quality? It sounds and behaves way better than it has any right to at the price and I build my own tube amps and have modded and repaired amps for global greats, having made a living in the Music Business for decades. I boiught one just to see how good it could be and was shocked at how well thought out and executed it is and above all, how great it sounds. I'd consider buying a second one to run wet/dry or in stereo for a huge Live gig stage sound but after the first week, my Son "borrowed" it.
On top of all this I found out about this amp through an online guitar gear forum mostly of professionals like me and at least a dozen I know of bought them and without a single exception all were equally knocked out. In all fairness we are unapologetic tweakers so a few guys tried other speakers and NOS tubes and such and mostly liked it even more but already dug the stock model. You simply cannot go wrong getting one of these amps. Nothing else is remotely as good a value. FWIW I have no affiliation with the manufacturer beyond being a very satisfied customer. Maybe you will become one, too.

Truth. I just bought my second one (stereo chorus time!), arrived in perfect condition. Very satisfied with it! Dare I say that it's better than the Blues Junior I had years ago, given that it has a master tone knob, an effects loop, and is less than half the cost, plus, to my ears, it sounds better. Some may say that's blasphemy, but I don't really care.

No. The output is a powered connection to an external cabinet, and is in parallel. You can push some decent cabinets with lower wattage Celestion and similar speakers with the 15 watts of power, but be sure the impedance of your external cabinet is at least 8 ohms (for instance, two cabs with 4 ohm speakers in series for 2 16 ohm cabinets, then run the cabinets in parallel to get 8 ohms, or a cabinet with 4 8 ohm speakers wired in series-parallel (2 8 ohm for 16 ohm on each side, sides wired in parallel for 8 ohms) to avoid damage. Theoretically as long as you are driving an 8 ohm load you could disconnect the internal speaker and use it exclusively to drive an external cabinet but running it just for headphones would probably best be accomplished with an attenuator. If you're looking to play quiet, the 1W switch will bring it in to a quieter animal but both of the Monoprice amps are extremely simple vintage-style class A amps, the small one with a single ended circuit and the 15 watt in push/pull. They have been sold as Laney amps as well as others for 3 times the price. If you want to go through the trouble you can make it quiet safely, these amps beg to be nodded, but I love them because they are the most simple and refined tube amps I have ever owned and I have been playing for 34 years. I have one of each of the 8 and 12 inch 5 and 15 watt amps.

BEST ANSWER: I would start with where it’s plugged in. Are other things plugged into the same circuit. Not just the same outlet. If you shut your breaker off how many outlets does it affect? Try plugging into an outlet that has nothing else on the circuit like your computer or tv. I would also buy a good quality cable for your guitar. No cheap ones. Get a didarrio or fender. A name brand. Stay away from the cheap Amazon ones, I know from experience. If you have pedals plugged in try unhooking them. It’s going to be process of elimination. If nothing works it may be something in the amp. I’m sure Monoprice will make it right. I would first switch to another outlet obviously to see if it’s a single plug issue or an interference issue. I’ve had luck adding a magnetic ring around the plug in some cases.
Lastly they do make hum eliminators that you can plug in between the wall and the amp.
For what it’s worth I plugged mine into the office in my new house alongside many other appliances and had no hum at all except at very high gain levels obviously.

Is the 1 Watt setting quiet enough to get the power section working at a bedroom friendly volume? Also how does it take various pedals?
A shopper
on Mar 6, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it works great for bedroom volumes. I use it almost every night after midnight and it doesn't wake the kids. I typically run it "clean,", low gain and low volume, and use pedals for various levels of dirt, distortion or fuzz. It takes pedals well like a tube amp should, and it has the warm tube sound more typical of Marshall than the sparkle of Fender. The only issue with bedroom volumes is that most overdrive pedals add a lot of boost to the guitar signal and that brings up the volume, as does switching to humbuckers from single coils. Also, in the 1 watt, pedals in front of the amp color the sound more than through the effects loop. But if you crank the amp up more, pedals in the effects loop work as expected. I am quite impressed with this amp. On all of my electrics, the volume and tone controls demonstrably color the guitar signal, even at bedroom volumes, which is something my old 50w and 100w Marshall plexis didn't do well (guitar volume was on/off, tone on/off with that amp).

The 1 Watt setting is quiet but like lower power settings on any amp, it doesn't sound as good as the regular power setting. This amp takes pedals quite well and also has an effects loop. Where it really shines is with a distortion pedal run straight into the amp with the gain volume on the amp set at 5 or lower and the master volume at 5 or higher. The sensitivity and touch with your playing, resonance, clarity and classic rock tones are very good at those settings provided you use a high dollar distortion pedal (I HIGHLY recommend the Wampler Pinnacle 2). You WILL NOT get a better deal anywhere else for what this amp offers for the money. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. BUY IT!

The one watt section isn’t too loud at all, I live in an old 1800s hotel converted into apartments so one thing we get is noise complaints for sneezing but I’ve had this amp on the one watt section and haven’t had any complaints. It also takes pedals extreamly well and has an effect loop witch you can use as a di into an interface to record with our a mic. Although if you wanted to di the amp with out any sound coming from the built in speaker you’ll have to disconnect the speaker or plug a dummy 3/4 jack into the external speaker output to bypass the speaker. Great little studio amp for the price.

It's a poor man's Blues Jr./Laney Cub. The cabinet is particle board and the tubes are no-name. It's all generic parts assembled on the cheap. However, that's the point. It's a legit tube amp for $200. The 1 watt setting does still work the power section just fine and it took all my pedals. I actually believe it's the best 15w tube amp you're gonna find for $200. You could probably gig with it as long as you treat it right and don't throw it around or abuse it badly. It's not a Fender or a Vox or even a Marshall.

1 Watt will quiet it down but as with most any tube amp with out using a power attenuation box the sound of the tubes dies off. Tubes want to be powered up and amped to sound like Tubes should. You might want to research that subject so you will know why the Tone drops out at lower power. This seems to happen on all Tube Amps. I never got to try pedals on mine. The Reverb stopped working and the Tolex was peeling off so bad I had to return it.

It is still loud, but depending upon the sound absorbent materials in the room you may get away without disturbing your neighbors. It seems to work well with pedals and the FX loop adds a lot. I use mine front loaded because I'm currently researching pedals for specific situations.

the one watt setting gets plenty of tube tone at low volumn. Have not tried pedals, and look forward to trying different pre amp tubes because I have some. Very happy with my purchase.

The 1 watt setting is still pretty loud if you push the tubes. Mine works great with gain and wah pedals in front of the amp and chorus/delay/looping effects in the effects loop.

Even the one watt setting is pretty LOUD …. But the amp loves pedals and you can get a wide open distortion that way at very low volumes …

Is the original packaging sturdy enough to withstand a flight?
New User U
on Mar 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: My Amp was shipped within a thicker than normal cardboard box, and that was inside yet another thicker cardboard box and delivered in pristine condition. On a flight I woud have no issue using the original packaging, but I personally would remove the tubes and pack them separately; probably wrapped in socks in my regular luggage as they are delicate and susceptible to drastic and sudden temperature and atmospheric pressure changes.

I should think it would be. My amp arrived double boxed with the inside box also including very sturdy corner protectors made from thick plastic foam. There is a review of the amp by the Darrell Braun Guitar channel on YouTube shows the packing materials when he opens up the box at the start of the video. Search for it on YouTube if you'd like to see how the packaging is done from MonoPrice.
I hope this helps you decide.

It's double-boxed. Both boxes are very sturdy. Plus it's upside down in the box so gravity is not trying to pull the tubes out. I'd be conformable shipping mine by air.
Mine was very good quality overall with the exception of the tolex. It was peeling in many places & the cuts were sloppy. I'm a tech and the chassis & PCB are better quality than a lot of amps costing 4x as much. Even the stock tubes are decent.

How do you think it made to Monoprice from China. Double Boxed with foam corners. If they drop it or slam it hard against something solid all bets are off. Make sure shipper covers shipping damage of buy extra insurance that does.

My amp arrived packaged in 2 sturdy cardboard boxes. One inside the other. There are also foam corners top and bottom.(8 total). You will have to be the judge as to whether that will be sufficient for a flight.

It comes double boxed and wrapped in plastic. Both boxes are fairly sturdy however I’m not sure I would fully trust it on a flight given how fragile tube amps usually are.

Can you use this as a head?
A shopper
on Jul 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There is an extension speaker output port in the back of the amp so you can plug that into another cabinet via a standard 1/4" speaker cable but the ohms will then change from 8 to 16 ohms. The cabinet speaker is directly wired from the amp and cannot be disconnected . Of course, you could always open up the amp and drill a hole in the back of the amp, install another 1/4" jack port and solder the speaker wire to it. You would then solder a 1/4" cable to the cabinet speaker. That way if you want to use the amp as a head so you're still in 8 ohms, you simply unplug the speaker from the 1/4" jack port you installed and run your cabinet cable from there to your cabinet.

Yes, you can use the extension speaker jack to run this amp through any speaker cabinet that is 8 ohms or more. If you do this, it will mute the internal speaker so that all of the sound will come out of the speaker cabinet.
If you are talking about taking the chassis out and putting it in a smaller, head only cabinet that is possible too although a little more complicated. You would need a cabinet big enough for the chassis and the reverb pan which is attached to the bottom of the amp.

Certainly - when you plug in an appropriate extension cab the internal speaker shuts off so essentially it becomes a head. The amp is so small that you could use it as a head without the need to put the amp chassis and reverb unit into a smaller head cab. Just make sure you only plugin an 8ohm or 16ohm speaker cab into the external jack. I have used this combo as a 'head' by plugging into a 2x12 cab (8ohms cab) when gigging and it works fine this way.

It has a speaker out in the back so it would drive another speaker but you would still get sound out of the amps speaker.

Using the external speaker jack, you can run an 8 ohm minimum speaker with this amp. The model I have (v1) disabled the internal speaker in this mode.
