Does this instrument come with setup?
A shopper
on Jan 22, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the instrument does come shipped with a very playable setup. I personally made a few adjustments to the bridge height but I didn’t feel much of a need to make any adjustments to the truss rod, nut, or pickup height. I did slightly file down the edges of the frets to make the neck feel a little smoother, but I wouldn’t say it is necessary.

You’re taking a gamble tbh. You might get a good one, you might not. Mine was shipped with no set up and a crooked tuning peg on the g string and it fell off when I attempted to tune it for the first time. Aside from that It’s got a decent tone for the price. It might be a little work to get it to where it needs to be but it’s good.

Mine came ready to play. Action isn’t amazing, but it’s pretty good. Intonation is solid. Sounds and plays better than other basses I’ve played that cost 3x as much or more. I mean, at this price, you can take it in for a setup and you’ll still have cheap bass that sounds and plays great.

I am a beginner luthier and believe me you can’t go wrong with any of Monoprices guitars. I own four of their instruments base and electric guitars and they all have come with a basic set up. They have extremely well-made instruments in the market today.

Mine came out of the box playable as is, but once they adjust to the new climate it's usually good to check truss rod
adjustment and intonation. A really nice bass for the money and a cut above the other more cheapo China stuff.
Go for it.

That depends on what you mean by 'setup'. Both of mine were quite playable out of the box. I chose to upgrade strings. Sometimes folks refer to a 'setup' as a collection of accessories, which is listed.

No, but adjustment is easy. You may want to order a fret file from Stew Mac, as the fret ends are sharp. Otherwise, the construction is solid and it sounds great!

The neck is a satin clear coat is maple. The fret board is an imitation rosewood (probably heat treated maple). The body is entirely painted black so I can't really tell; it could be ash or maple., it's quite heavy. This is my first bass guitar so I'm not sure how the weight compares to others.

The J (Jam) Bass is a Fender Jazz Bass copy. The P (Pub) Bass is a Fender Precision Bass copy. You can research the differences in those and you'll have all your answers.

Does the jamm bass have sufficient room inside to swap the neck pickup to a split-coil "precision-type" pickup? Better still, does Monoprice have plans to offer a bass with p-type pickup at the neck and j-type pickup at the bridge position? Thank you.

After a year , I found a guitar I would never sell. And the same with the amp. Perfect combination with the guitar. I'm proud to own an indio .
I thought I'd make a review after over a year. All i did was a slight adjustment strings neck height of pickups. All else was right on. And the fit of the neck in the body just perfect. With the solid state 40 w amp just change of speaker and wow the sound is amazing. And absolutely no hum. Yes I play the bass through this amp just don't hit the boost button. After hearing other guitars, you really need to try this guitar. It's got punch and clean and a deep bass sound. I've heard reviews on very expensive guitars, don't know if it's there high end amps or guitars but every time I run to mine and I wish I had this when I was young.

Anybody Want To Buy A Fender Jazz Bass?
Unexpectedly nice. I did have to lower the pick ups after setting the action where I like it. The strings were vibrating against them. After a totally proper setup, I can't find anything to complain about. Plays nice, has great sound, and is the consummate 'Jazz Bass'. Not only is it a great player, I happen to think it's just gorgeous for a 'plain black' guitar. Would buy again, and it's a bargain even at full price. I AM seriously considering selling my Fender Jazz now that I'm retired from live performance. This is all I need.

second try.returned first one.
Not as nice as the pubb bass I bought a few months ago. Nicer than the one I returned I suppose. At least I can fix the issues with this one.Monoprice service was great. No problem there. You would think the manufacturer could at least wipe these off before packing them.Lots of small issues, but I can live with them.Dont feel like returning another one.Just wish I had bought it at the sale price like i did the pubb bass. The pubb bass was better than expected. that,s what prompted me to get the jamm bass. The jamm bass is less than expected.Planned on modding it anyway.Just more to fix.

Great value for the price
Pluses: price, fit and finish. Some other reviews pointed out sharp edges on the frets but they seem to have fixed that.
Minuses: crosstalk. The E string rings if leave it open while playing on the other strings.
You cannot beat this for the price. You could spend almost as much on a set of strings as this whole bass. This is well worth the money.

Monoprize
Always wanted a Jazz Bass..It sounded awesome! Used to have one and this is the same. Had to sand paper edge of frets. After sliding my fingers on the sting, I felt sharp edges at the frets, which is now smooth.. Thank you! I'm enjoying it!

A Guitar Tech's Opinion
It's actually rare to get a guitar that's truly playable, right out of the box, but this one is.
I did tweak the relief a bit and saddles could stand to be a few thousandths lower - but they're really close to spec right out of the box.
The bass guitar played great and it has some heft to it like more expensive bass guitars - doesn't feel or look like a cheap guitar.

Sharp fret edges!! Other than that pretty good!
Really pretty good overall and a great value for the price. My only complaint is the sharp fret edges. These should have been filed at least some in the set up process. As it is the bass is almost unplayable with the unfinished frets....other than that, I'm pleased with the purchase.

Don't Hesitate
I ordered this bass just as sometihng to use in the studio. First of all, the shipping was FAST. Was not expecting shipping to be quick, especially at this price. Second of all, it's just an amazing bass. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't even have to put new strings on, the ones they shipped it with were great.
