I would say No, have you ever built a guitar? a bare foot hippy from LA could not have built a better one than the one I got. no sloppy glue runs on the inside. Great Finnish, Action & set up . China made yes. were children there maybe? did a bare foot 8 yr old build/assemble it??? NO WAY mine is too nice & came in tune/ stays in tune. with a built in turner & pick up. Camp guitar yap, that's what i wanted. it lives in an RV. the $100 traveler.... Campers Camp Fire Guitar that is great for sing a longs or just a great practice guitar. FYI have you been to MEXICO our PENNY'S are like DOLLARS so mine is worth $1000.00! over there..... CHINA maybe even more.
I'm guessing this guitar is made in the same factory that produces a lot of name brand guitars (lower end models). So yes sweatshop conditions are likely, but unfortunately the only way to avoid that is to buy American made (expensive!) or used (Best option!). If you have an iphone and a pair of Nike's then your karma is already totally screwed... It's pretty hard to avoid it in this globalized world. These guitars are amazing for the price in my experience. But used is definitely the ethical way to go IMO.
In all honesty I got this guitar based off its looks, I normally like to play a guitar before I buy it. I wasn't expecting much from this guitar, especially at this price. I'm pleasantly surprised, it looks good, it feels good in the hands, and to my surprise it sounds great.
The package came in very timely manner, it was well packed and with some tuning was ready to rock right out of the box.
I would buy another guitar from monoprice, I actually have my eye on the Tele style guitar.
This guitar is simply awesome. I have bought monoprice guitars in the past and was greatly impressed, this was no different. Great build and balance, sounds clean and bright, better than my ovation. Action was better out of the box as well. Not to mention a nice gig bag on top of it. Monoprice does it again with a fantastic product.
The guitar has a nice finish and has been setup to play. The sound is pretty blah organically, however when amplified and shaped it is fine for coffee shop open mic night. They say solid wood guitars get better with age, but so does laminated wood.. The adhesive in the lam dulls the sound a bit and hardens and out gasses until hard, the wood then has aged as well and the sound improves. Until then I'll use it plugged when I play out. Sounds fine when amplified and the XLR is nice.
What a great guitar for a great price! The instrument came very well packed. The E string buzzed a little on the second and third fret and when I tried to loosen the string to clean the nut the string broke. No big deal since I put on a new string and there was no buzzing. This is a great sounding guitar and when I plugged it into the amplifier boy was I surprised with the clear and balanced sound. This is one of the best deals I have done a long time.
