BEST ANSWER: There is NO audio volume capability on the remote I received with my Monoprice Blackbird 4x1 HDMI 1.4 Switch. It works well but there is a noticeable blackout lag when switching between the two desktops I have connected to the one monitor and external speakers.

Will I have lip sync delay issues when extracting audio with this unit? I've had lip sync issues with other brands of HDMI audio extractors and movies were unwatchable because the the voices lagged so far behind the actor's lips.

Immediately upon use, the blue light can go off and switching will be disabled. Power cycling will restore use until it (randomly) occurs again. I'd love to return it but the thought of re-configuring the wiring is daunting and depressing. This unit paired perfectly with the Harmony Remote (via database, I did not even have to 'teach it') and acts as required in every other way! Is this some known issue that can be rectified?

I own the same receiver, have had it for over a year an not once has this problem occurred. I would say you either have a manufacture defect or there is minor power issues occurring at your residence.

Can you still get audio output if the TV connected to the HDMI output is either off or disconnected?
A shopper
on Nov 17, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Depends on your set up. If your TV is the source of the show then you won't. If your cable box is the source of the show then you could get the audio output with your TV off. In both cases, I'm assuming you are not playing the sound through your TV, rather through an amplifier.

Short answer is yes...
The long answer -> On that device, both of the digital audio outputs (optical and coax) as well as the analog audio output are all sourced from the HDMI device selected as an input (1, 2, 3 or 4) - and are simultaneously hot (outputting audio) all the time when the selected HDMI source is transmitting an audio signal.
Additionally, a handy additional feature of connecting a DVD or Blu-Ray player to any input and playing an audio CD, is the audio will be transmitted over the HDMI cable digitally output to ALL of the devices audio outputs.
As well, the above answer by Jonathan G is completely accurate as well.

Does this switch pass through dolby digital 5.1 from HDMI through to the optical port?
A shopper
on Jan 7, 2017
I am currently only using 2.1 connection. However I believe it will give you dolby 5.1 pass through. You probably won't get DTS or TRUE Hd though. I'm connecting an optical wire from the soundbar to the switcher. From there I have an hdmi from the switcher to the tv and several other imputs in the other 3 hdmi ports. Remeber DTS and TRUE HD cannot be achieved with an optical connection.

BEST ANSWER: I see no reason why this would not work. Sound bars are amplified, and most of them you can manually adjust the volume. Keep in mind the digital optical output is affixed to level so all the adjustments would be at the Soundbar itself. I use this switch with a laptop, Roku, and Apple TV with the output going to a Vivitek projector. I use the analog output on the switch to a mixer. But if you use the Toslink port it would be not different.

I don't have the same setup as you're using, so I can't speak to if it'll work exactly. But it does sound similar to what I'm using it for.
I have cable/PS4/Chromecast running to the HDMI inputs on the switcher. The HDMI output from the switch goes to my TV, and I have the optical audio out of the switch running to a soundbar. Works flawlessly.
Hope this helps!

Can I hook two tv's through this with one soundbar? Want to run both on same channel but have soundbar for audio.
A shopper
on Apr 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: This doesn't sound like what you need. If you have a source that you want to display on both TVs at the same time you would need a splitter not a switch. Then you would just hook up the soundbar to one TVs output. You may have a little out of sync images unless they are the same model TV though because of latency in the image processing pipeline. If you just need a way to connect the soundbar because your tv doesn't have an output you need an HDMI audio extractor, that would give you one.

Yes you can. Just plug an optic cable from the switch to the soundbar. It will be broadcasting what ever is plugged into the input of the switch, one port for video coming in and 4 ports for the video going out.

Can I use the remote and/or button to select a NON active input port? most hdmi switches only seem to switch to active ports. please answer only if you have tested this configuration, no guesses.
This matters to me because my laptop will not send an HDMI signal to an external display until it is connected to the external display, but if the switch won't let me elect an input port that is not active, I can't set up the connection. two other switches (with "autoswitch") have failed this configuration already

Will I lose 4k content while using this switch?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: It will not pass 4K content. It will identify itself as 1080p capable to any device to which it is attached. Said device will then send 1080p video.
For 4K video, ensure any device (switch, TV, AVR, etc) supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. Technically, HDMI 1.4 supports 4K video, but equipment such as UHD Blu ray players require HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2.
From product description: Supported Video Resolutions are 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p.
From product manual, video output is HDMI 1.3b. HDMI 1.3b DOES NOT support 4K video.

Is there a version of this switch, that does everything this one does (5.1 DD optical output especially) that has 5 or more inputs? I've got a Wii U, XBOX 360, XBOX One, PS3 and PS4 so I need 5 inputs. Well, 6 inputs would give me breathing room.

A button on the remote stopped working. Can I get a replacement remote?
Taylor M
on May 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: While you can likely get a replacement remote, I recommend using a universal remote rather than the tiny remote this comes with. Then you can program the switch to automatically work with programmed functions. For example, I press "watch DVD," and my remote changes the TV inputs, switches inputs on the HDMI switch, and starts the DVD player. I don't have to think about the HDMI switch, and haven't touched the original remote in years..

I programmed it button by button from the original remote into the Logitech database as "Monoprice 10557." So as long as you have a Harmony universal remote, you can add it without having a working remote. If your remote is from another manufacturer, check their database first.
How did you set it up with the universal remote? Trying to make sure it'll be compatible with a Harmony before I get it...

I bought this in late february. It works well, but the remote stoped working after about a month... Now I'm having a problem with the sound, since im using it as a switch between 5.1 sound capable devices, but with a soundbar that doesn't. So now Im not getting some of the audio tracks because the switch goes automatically in 5.1 and cannot be changed without the remote. is there any solution ? having the codes to the remote so it could be programmed on an other remote perhaps ? or being able to use the current physical button to switch sound modes too...

BEST ANSWER: I had a similar problem with the sound from a Google Chromecast to my sound bar. The fix is to go into Chromecast settings, Display & Sound, Advanced sound settings, and set manual enable, set Dolby Digital enable, and disable Dolby Digital Plus and all other options.
Maybe other devices can disable 5.1 sound to send basic Dolby Stereo to your sound bar.

Thanks for the quick response. Can it output two at the same time, out of the 3.5 and the HDMI?
I'm going off memory but I think it's only a digital output in the form of a toslink optical there's not a three and a half millimeter analog output that I'm aware of
I apologize they have updated it since I used it I just looked at the specs again apparently it will do a three-and-a-half millimeter analog input values with DVI and convert it and turn it into either toslink or digital coax output

A1234 (the A is whatever letter is supposed to be in the code, and then the 4 number digits).
Please and thanks!

BEST ANSWER: I have a similar setup (older TV rather than projector, dedicated non AV amp) and ause the audio splitting for multiple inputs. Most of the time when I have had audio issues it is be the source is outputting an audio stream that the destination does not process. Try setting the Direct TV box to output PCM/2ch audio as this is the simplest stream and see if that helps. When some of the newer DTS and Dolby standards are used the destination device as to understand them to work

With HDMI switch can you connect a bluetooth transmitter?
A shopper
on Dec 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't see why not. The signal comes in to the box and is directed to one of the outputs, if that output goes to a transmitter, it doesn't involve the switch at all. Same for a signal coming into the box from a BT receiver.

Works.
It works. I have Directv Dvr with harddrive that does not play well with my Marantz AV7706 and my LG OLED. The only way I could get video was to bypass AV7706 and connect hdmi directly to LG. Then I could get picture but no sound. This switch allows me to get sound through Toslink connection.

it sorta works but a PITA
The first one I got was DOA, no video or audio. Returned for replacement, no problem
Second one - OK it does what it says - BUT:
1. it always defaults to input 1 after power off. Input 1 is on the front which sux, makes for a messy install
2. It will only produce audio signal in 2.1 mode, AND it defaults to 5.1 mode on startup - so EVERY TIME on startup you have switch the audio mode. This confuses my receiver, have to reset its input mode - STUPID & FRUSTRATING
2a. Oddly, even though it only works in 2.1 mode, my receiver does detect dolby and dts in the coax signal - huh?
3. Overall it's just too clumsy for me to use, and unfortunately I spent more than 30 days d_cking around with it b4 trying to return it - too late, too bad!

Excellent Device!
Excellent little unit ? useful features, simple design, and a great price. The ability to route all incoming audio to the optical (Toslink) output was my main interest, but it?s also a handy little switcher that we now use on all out setups. Highly recommended!

the video quality is just a bit worse for some reason too.
FYI: The LEDs on the front are SUPER BRIGHT.....some black electrical tape is in order

Works very well, BUT the documentation should be rewritten
The User Manual, which is downloadable, should be rewritter. English isn't my first language, but I can definitely see that the document isn't written is proper English, in my humble opinion... ... Some information aren't clear. Also, it categorizes "stereo jack" output as "digital", which is false. It's analog.

Nice to have HDMI ports but volume needs work/adjustment
There is no option for a volume control on the device. The audio is too loud coming from any device that is being plugged from and I tried multiple devices. The volume on the speaker is as low as possible yet still loud. I like the ports but audio is a big issue.

Only good with certain tv's it seems
After a couple of days using it on my old Sylvania TV (about 10 years old), it does the video issues others have reported, where it won't show anything but you can hear the audio (worked perfectly fine the first couple of days). Maybe the solution a couple of others have suggested will work with more recent tv's, but not an older one.
Make sure the switch is off, as well as your tv. Turn tv on first , then turn on the switch. It might work with some other's but not me. Luckily this doesn't effect me too much, but still a problem that Monoprice needs to address and help people with. Otherwise, this business won't last long.
