My cable company just went all digital. When using their little black box, the HDMI connection to my tv stops for a few seconds quite often. No problem when using the coax connection. However, there is a quality loss when using just the coax. I was hoping to run the coax from their little black box into this device and then running hdmi into my tv. Will this work and will I get the full benefits from hdmi?

BEST ANSWER: The "Best Answer" here seems to say that the RCA jack (Coax) on this device is for Audio only. The jack itself in the product photo is color Yellow. This indicates it is intended for video. Aside from that detail, Scott's point about the device appears to be correct. "This device is designed to take a video signal and an audio signal and combine them into a single stream through the HDMI out."

Actually the rca (coaxial) input/output is orange, which indicatrs digital(spdif) audio. please do not post answers if you do not know what you are talking about.

That is not what this device is designed for. The coax mentioned here is coax for audio only. It is a completely different connector, which is very confusing that they call it coax. This device is designed to take a video signal and an audio signal and combine them into a single stream through the HDMI out.

It is called a coax connector because coax or coaxial is not a type of signal but the actual type of cable and connector represented on this device. coaxial means that the wire pairs are broken out into a pin and ring style connector. similar to rca audio jacks, antennae/cable connectors, and older style twistlock networking/av connectors.

My TV only has one output and it is an audio optical output. Can I use this product to convert theTV optical output to HDMI output with the product and then connect the HDMI output on the product to my stereo receiver?

BEST ANSWER: I use mine to take the DVI video out and optical sound out from my Mac desktop computer, and then run the HDMI to my TV.
If the optical on your TV is really an OUT and not a sound IN, I do not see why it would not work. Verify it is an out though!

Does this device alter the DVI signal in any way other than embedding the optical audio? What is the latency added by this device?

on Jan 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I cannot speak for the latency, but hdmi is a backwards compatible technology that originated from the digital video interface. But yes it does alter the signal, by combining it with audio, and turning it into an hdmi compliant signal. it should not alter the picture quality

Will this unit convert only the digital optical input signal to an HDMI output signal? I have an optical audio output on my tv and want to us it to connect to the HDMI input on my surround sound system

BEST ANSWER: that is a good question. I do not know if it would work in that fashion, but you could possibly use an hdmi to dvi cable and connect it to this device then using the digital/optical output from your tv inject the audio to the hdmi cable for that purpose. but that begs the question, if you already have hdmi available on your surround sound why not just use the hdmi ports to do the job. your tv should have at least 2 hdmi ports with one or both being labeled hdmi/arc for audio return channel. this is what its intended purpose is. if your tv does not, then your surround system should have multiple hdmi ports that would take your inputs and the output to the tv.

My Digital Optical Audio input on my Bose Solo Sound System broke and so it will no longer hold this cable in any longer. I am trying to figure out a way to convert the Digital Optical out on my TV to either a Coaxial input or an Analog stereo audio cable input on my Bose system. My Samsung TV doesn't have either of these inputs, just HDMI, Digital Optical Audio outputs. Will this work?

Not what I wanted
The description said it was a digital coaxial/optical audio to HDMI converter - and I assumed it was like from a TV antenna coaxial type of cable but it wasn't. It is useless for my use.

The second one was the good one
After buying a default one from Amazon, I ordered 2 from monoprice , and cheaper than Amazon.
Excellent product for the price.
Get rid of the HDCP problem.
I bought two to make sure I will have a spare one .

DVI Video + Digital Coaxial and Digital Optical Audio to HDMI Converter
I am giving this item 4 stars, because it appears to be good quality. It shipped in timely manner and arrived undamaged. It shipped in appropriate container and the box was not damaged. I cannot use this product, as it was not what I required. I did not know I purchased the wrong thing. I will be returning this product, but only because it does not fit my needs.

Good Product
I have two of these products and have been happy with them. In my latest scenario, I'm using it to combine optical audio from an Xbox 360 and the HDMI output of the Xbox 360 into a single HDMI output. The reason is because the Xbox 360 only sends stereo audio through HDMI, but this way I get the optical 5.1 channel sound and the HDMI video combined.

Didn't Work For My Mac
This didn't work for an older 2009 Mac Mini. The Mac Mini could not transmit the audio using this converter so I ended up using an alternative connection and returned this product.

It does a clean conversion
The video coming out is sharp.
CONS: It needs a bit more weight to resist the pull of the cables as it is, one needs to strap it or tape it in place.

I bought this to convert an audio signal from optical to SPDIF with the option to use video conversion in the future. Looks like my assumption that it will convert audio signal from one format to the other without video involved was incorrect. Not really fault of the device, but it is disappointing to not have it work out after the costly cross border duties and shipping fees.
