How do I determine what AWG I should get? Does it depend on the length? Can I figure it out based on the wattage of what I am powering?

BEST ANSWER: Standard residential 15A (1,800 Watts; 1,600 watt or less load ideal) is 14AWG (though some actually wire 15A with 12AWG). That's your safest bet (I sure wouldn't use 16 or 18 AWG on a 15A outlet). And note that 14AWG is *NOT* suitable for 20A circuits (kitchen, garage, basement, utility, etc)... technically, less than 14AWG can work on 15A circuitry, but its *NOT* NEC code compliant nor is it ever safe to use less than 14AWG on any 15A circuit (and your homeowner's insurance likely wouldn't cover you if you did have a fire from using the lesser AWG). And the longer the run, the hotter the wiring gets (voltage drop), the more potentially hazardous it is. So 14AWG and the shortest run/length you require is best for this application.
The exception to this would be an electronic device that has a typical power plug (I see them at the back of set top boxes, for example) where this end of the cord will be plugged into that device and the other end to another electronic device, but not the 15A wall outlet. And I'm sure the AWG required for that would be specified somewhere. TLDR there is that DC power is very different than AC power (requirements/safety factors, such as AWG, greatly differ).

Cord is OK, packaging uses too much plastic (for landfill)
Cord is fine. Packaging uses excessive plastic, is environmentally hostile. So much plastic trash. Why is each cord encased in its own hermetically sealed plastic bag? Such a waste. A cord needs NO BAG, at all. Who cares if a cord gets scuffed? I don't. Then all the cords were shipped together in a larger box filled with inflatable plastic fillers. Ugh. More plastic trash for a landfill. So sad.
Had it been a local retailer, I would have returned it all. I was appalled by all that plastic garbage wrapping.
Monoprice, you can do better. We have only 1 planet.

Power Cord
I ordered PC cords instead of electrical cords. I was going to return them but our son
is in Technology so he took them and I ordered the correct cords. My orders came very quickly and I was happy with what I ordered for the price.
PROS: Good company to order from. Orders come fast.
CONS: None

Great
So, yes they are super short! Only buy if you are sure this is all you need. I bought two and they work well for the units in the rack that are immediately next to my power conditioner. I wish I could 2 foot 14 AWG cables for the pieces that do not sit directly above or below the power unit. I only see 2 foot 16 AWG on the website but want the thickest i can find for power amps. Love keeping the back of my case as uncluttered as possible and these 1 footers are a great start. The low price of these guys is amazing.
