BEST ANSWER:This cable converts XLR to unbalanced RCA. Pins 1 and 3 are shorted together and connect to the RCA sleeve. Pin 2 connects to the RCA tip. I have never seen a cable that breaks out balanced XLR to separate (+) and (-) RCA connectors, probably because RCA inputs are typically unbalanced..

Best value cables. I've spent hundreds of dollars on cables: MIT, Monster, Straightwire etc, but for the money great sounding cables. I use these for my atmos speakers via preamp out to rca in on my atmos amp. |Recommended!
I assume that the products works well. My complaint is that I called for clarification for whether it would work for my intended purpose -- to connect my preamp out (the XLR side of things) to my DAC (the RCA side). I was told it would. It did not, unfortunately. I later learned that this plug will not work because it is essentially connecting a preamp to another preamp. When I switched and used tape out (RCA connections on my amp) to the DAC it worked fine. So there you have it. A nice, but unnecessary set of cables from Monoprice. I'm glad they were only $15.
The cables are fine and I'm well pleased. I'm extremely disappointed in Monoprice, however. They pulled and processed my order the day I placed it, but didn't ship it for five days.It took another 6 days enroute. Utah to California should only take 2 days. Three at most. An order that should have been at my house in 2 days took 11 days. That's not what I call good service.
My two-star rating may or may not be fair...I already had two similar cables from another manufacturer that I had used about a year ago in a similar application, and they worked fine. I planned to use those two cables along with these from Monoprice to connect the balanced outputs for the side and rear surrounds on my Anthem pre-pro to a four-channel amp lacking balanced inputs. After installing the cables and firing the system up, there was a loud buzz in the surround channels. I turned everything off and verified the connections were correct and secure and tried again...same result. Then I removed the four XLR to RCA cables and installed RCA-only cables between the pre-pro and the amp. Everything worked fine, so I have to assume there is an issue with the Monoprice cables, although the buzz was present in all four of the surround channels.
I bought these cables to hook up an Otari MX5050 reel-to-reel to my hifi. I've bought stuff from Monoprice before and their products offer good value for short bread, but these cables are better than I expected! The shielding is very heavy and thick, and the connectors are gold-plated. More importantly, I am very pleased with their performance. Imaging is deep, bass is fulsome and tight, and everything just sounds cohesive and together. I'm going to order more Monoprice cables for my home studio!
