Why would a digital amplifier require 2 20 amp power cords…?

BEST ANSWER: Given the nature of the NC502MP module and the chassis size target we were working toward, the overall assembly allowed for two power inlets so we could better position the amp to hit the targeted power numbers on all 8 channels at the same time.
Based on testing, at full power from all 8 channels into 8ohms the amp draws ~23 Amps total from the 120VAC wall. To get to the 4ohm spec we claim, 400W, on all 8 channels we need to double that current, ~46Amps. One 20A/16A rated inlet would not handle that current. Also based on the Hypex datasheet, the NC502MP power consumption at full power is 1.2kW per module. With 4 modules in the chassis, we would need a connector to handle 4.8kW. At 120VAC line voltage, that would need to handle 40Amps.

Just a clarification, while a Class D amp does have a switching power supply, it is not a ‘digital’ amp (and ‘D’ does not stand for ‘digital’).

Can I plug bother the plugs into one outlet. Or is it required to have the plugs plugged in on desperate outlets/circuits?

BEST ANSWER: If you look at the answer above regarding current draw of the two circuits, it would depend on the impedance of your speakers, and how hard you expected to drive them. In reality, few people (if any) would likely ever draw maximum power from this amp in a real system scenario. I would expect most people could get by with a single 20A circuit, and some with a single 15A, but to get near rated power, you’d need (2) 20A circuits.

Looking forward to seeing this actually for sale. It looks like a game changer. Looking at the back panel and the specs on the hypex module, I am assuming that dual 20A circuits is a must to get close to full-rated output on all 8 channels (which most people would never see in real life). When can we expect to see some hands-on reviews or the product?

Are all of the XLR inputs truly balanced? Secondly, why is there not the power trigger out? I will need two of these amps therefore I would like to trigger both of them

Can I run this on a 15 amp outlet ? I realize that for all eight channels to run at 200 W at the same time it must be a 2 20 amp circuits.. I doubt I would ever be running 200 W on all eight channels at the same time though. This would be powering rear channels for surroundsound along with Atmos.

I have a dedicated 20amp circuit (actually was wired for 30 amps originally with 10/3 romex). If I plug both cords into the one outlet what are the odds the single dedicated 20amp will be enough and no trip a breaker or starve the amp? My room is 19x13 I can't see ever driving all 8 channels to anywhere near 200 watts/ch?

Best difference or pros/cons between the Class D(M8250X) vs Class A/B(7x200) Amplifiers? Sound quality difference? Distortion? Looking at a 9.2.4 setup. Any help would be appreciated.

Light, Silent, Sexy.
My Emotiva XPA-5 pooped out on me, and i'd already been reading about Hypex Amplifier Modules and the excellent specifications they have. I was looking at ordering one from overseas integrators instead of the US Based ones, but when I saw that Monoprice had one available I knew that was the route to go. I snagged this as soon as it came in stock and have had it running at home for a few days now.
The Amplifier Gain is clearly lower than my Emotiva Amp as things are no longer as loud, which should be fixed by a recalibration of Dirac Live. But this amplifier is completely silent when my volume is turned up to 100%.
The build quality is also excellent and the amplifier feels very nice while also being half the weight of my Emotiva Amplifier. The only thing I'm missing is that I wish they had used nicer posts for the speaker connections on an amplifier this expensive.
Sorry I don't have an audiophile style review of the sound. It sounds excellent though and has zero noise that i've been able to detect.
Oh, and the power button feels nice for what its worth.
