Can you use the Mac USB-C for Display or do you need to get an HDMI adaptor?
David D
on Sep 22, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You can and it works pretty well as long as you’re only running one display. I had this connected to my MacBook with multiple desktops and every time I changed away from the USB-C input, the MacBook would move all my work onto the built in display.

I don't have a Mac, but since there is no HDMI output for Port1 (the USB-C port), the video signal must be presented on the USB-C connector

No. It is strictly for connecting to a USB host like an iPad or MacBook with USB-C

BEST ANSWER: Thanks for reaching out Monprice. This KVM has two USB-A Ports which allows you to connect printer & scanner. You could also use the USB-A Hub to expand more USB ports for other devices, such as Keyboard and mouse.

The USB-C port is listed as "Power Delivery", but the "Full Specs" list it as "USB 2.0, 5 VDC, 1.5A" which would be a tiny 7.5W. Generally, USB-C delivers a minimum of 15W (and generally better). Is this correct? Is it really USB 2.0 over USB-C (a USB 3.1 spec)?

BEST ANSWER: USB-C Port info:
1. Power charging : The USB-C output will only supports up to 7.5w which is not PD standard. We will make the web content update asap.
2. Video and audio transmission from USB C to HDMI which is following USB-C Gen 3.1 standard.

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=36643 is the recommended cable, but this wouldn't work. This KVM would require a USB cable with Type A on both ends, which is a non-standard configuration. It'd consider buying this KVM if it had standard Type B or Type C ports for connecting to computers

I love my KVM switch and have been using it for 2 years in a WFH setup. I was wondering if you'll be developing on that provides 65W or better charging over USB-C? My wife likes to plug in her Macbook but requires another charger at the same time. Cheers!

When connecting to the USB-C input, my display is not working. I've tried MacMini with Thunderbolt, as well as a Dell laptop. The connected machines (either Apple or Dell) are able to recognize the peripherals, but my monitor just goes to sleep. These same machine on the other ports using HDMI are working fine. I've tried swapping out the cables 3x, but didn't have any luck. Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue?

Started failing intermittenly
After a month with no issues, the keyboard and mouse that are connected have started to lose connection to the switch. Not sure the cause but worried the switch is going to continue to fail now as I've had it occur multiple times in the last 48hrs now :(

Confusion deducts 1 star
It does what it's supposed to do. One start off because it seems to get confused if my latop goes to sleep while attached. Once it is confused, you typically have to power cycle the KVM to get back to normal operation.

A good solution to sharing KVM between multiple high resolution systems
Works as expected - once I found a high speed HDMI cable that would carry the 4K/60Hz video signal and USB cables with the right connections on both ends (USB-A male-male). You may not have the right ones just laying around. Would be nice if there were buttons to go directly to any of the 3 inputs and, in my case, having the USB-C port on the back of the unit would look neater on my desk.

USB-C doesn't work
Works for both HDMI inputs, but Input-1 / USB-C doesn't work. I've tried multiple cables and multiple computers, and nothing will output to my display (though shared keyboard does work via USB-C).

nice KVM, weird cable requirements
This unit, unlike most USB switching devices, requires a USB-A to USB-A cable. There are no such cables in the box- so I was forced to wait a week to order the correct cables.

Does what it's supposed to!
Worked out of the box as expected with my Linux tower via HDMI and USB-A, and Microsoft laptop or Samsung S10 via USB-C. I tried my LG V40, wife's Samsung Note which both work. I thought the LG wasn't going to work as I got no response and searching found that it didn't support USB-C to HDMI output initially. Turns out it was an interference between the USB-C cable and my case.
It requires a USB-A to USB-A cable and HDMI cable for each standard HDMI connected PC and a USB-C to USB-C cable to connect a phone or USB-C laptop. The recommended cables ad on the product page originally showed a USB-A to USB-B but they have corrected it since.
Not a complaint, just an observation; switching inputs relies on a single button and It's a little slow going between inputs, so can't just click twice to go from input 2 to input 1. Click once, wait a couple seconds, click again.
So far, very pleased! Price is good and it allows me to use my (very tiny) work laptop or phone on a full size screen with real keyboard and mouse. Thumbs up!
