BEST ANSWER: It's an AC Voltage detector. Very helpful in wiring, or re-wiring switches, outlets, etc. It beeps when near a 'hot' wire.

Excellent basic kit

I purchased one of these kits for work based on its reviews. I was not disappointed, and the reviews were spot on. I like this kit so much I am purchasing one for home as well. While it is true there aren't adequate instructions for this kit, it wasn't hard to figure it out, and I am not an electrician. For the price, this kit should be highly considered. Monoprice products are excellent for the price paid.
