Are these paintable?
A shopper
on Jan 31, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The shelves appear to wrapped in colored vinyl, I would think paint would not adhere too well. You might be able to use a vinyl woodgrain material (available at most home supply stores) to re-wrap the shelves. Possibly somewhat costly.
The tubing might be paintable if you can find a good primer.

The finish on the Monolith shelves is not conducive to painting, However, with very light sanding and Good spray primer, any paint applied might stick. Not recommended to paint the shelves, but the metal legs are paintable.

I would not try to paint these. The shelves have a slick "plasticey" feel to them and the uprights appear to be powder coated, which is basically plastic. Most paints do not adhere well to plastic.

Are the shelves made out of real wood or are they an MDF type of material with a faux wood veneer applied? I'm mainly interested in knowing this as it would determine which color I would get.
A shopper
on Mar 16, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I am pretty sure it's some type of MDF with a thin layer of wood colored material. Definitely not real wood. I will say this though, it is very sturdy, particularly the shelf that is reinforced with a metal brace on the bottom. It does look a little chunky compared to other stands, but it does the job, and with open access at the back. I went with this model because the stand I had wouldn't accommodate my yamaha carousel cd player. jimg

I have the expresso shelves with my monolith rack. They are MDF and very nice. This is a high-end rack... very solid. I would recommend the Monolith Rack to anyone looking for four shelf audio shelving that would not look out of place with any high-end audio system.

The shelves are not real wood; probably MDF/veneer. The good thing about this rack is that the legs are adjustable
at the bottom so it can be leveled - good if you want to put a turntable on the top shelf and the turntable doesn't have leveling feet.

The bottom shelf is essentially the same as the one on the single shelf Amplifier/Component XL. What I mean by that is there is additional structural support not found on the three upper shelves by means of steel reinforcement. According to the spec sheet on your amplifier it weighs in at 93.2lbs. I have had a Mark Levinson 333 weighing in at just under 150lbs on my Monolith stand for most of a year now. Rest assured it will support your amp. You could stack them both if there was more height.

Monolith by Monoprice Heavy Duty 4 Tier Audio Stand XL, 1" Shelf Thickness, Black
Monolith by Monoprice Heavy Duty 4 Tier Audio Stand XL, 1" Shelf Thickness, Maple
So they are both correct but measured from different points. From inside edge of support to inside edge of support the width is 18.9 inches. measured from the centerline of each support the width is 20.9 inches. If your component is < 18.9 inches in width you will be able to slide it straight in.

I just took a 19" rackmount bracket and layed it on one of the shelves.
It is just slightly wider than the space between the supports. I'd say
the 18.9" spec is the correct one.

BEST ANSWER: You could, but you will not have the holes in the other shelf for the extra side supports, unless you put the side support tubes on the shelf below it. Instead, you can add Item #39163, which is a single reinforced shelf that you can add to the top.

Thanks Dennis. Without the extra side supports if I use the reinforced shelf on top, am I reducing the strength of the shelf? From some of the other comments, there seems not to be consensus on this. I would have thought the steel vertical portions would have sufficient strength but don’t want to risk it given the size of the amp. All input is very appreciated.

On audio rack #39167 can the 4 corner cover caps be removed by popping them out from underneath?
A shopper
on Mar 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Those corner caps act as nuts and screw onto the top of screws sticking out from the posts beneath. The headless screws between each level go into the posts and the top set of screws are just shorter but do go through the top shelf and the cover caps screw onto them. A longer set of headless screws through the top shelf would allow you to stack more shelves together, and the unit would not fall apart if you didn't put the top caps on.

This would be interesting to me if the spacing between all shelves was over 8" like the bottom. My application would be to hold power amps, which are 8" in height. A 3 shelf instead of 4 would be fine. Are there any other versions of this, or can the bottom legs be purchased separately to increase the spacing between the top shelves?

Is it possible to take out one of the middle shelves and connect the posts together so there is one larger space?

Nice thick shelves. Poor bottom feet.
I purchase 2 of these units. To make one perfect one for my needs. I wanted 2 of the shelves that had the metal support bracket and the longer support post. Also one extra shelf. It went together perfect except the bottom feet post. Why use a plastic insert into a metal pole to screw the feet on. Went to set the thing up all the plastic inserts came right out. It was perfect up to that point. Luckily since I bought 2, I used one of the other set of poles that had the metal insert already in them. Set it up all is right with the world. Even if I didn't add the 2 extra shelves once you add your components its a little risky of a set up with out the modification.

Sturdy and Stylist
This is a great looking stand and it can easily handle heavy loads. I bought two for my entertainment center just the pieces I needed to house my equipment. Perfect purchase for me.

Good item but need some extra tools to do a perfect job
I also needed the following tools: rubber grippers to secure pillar legs at each stage, bionic wrench for securing tightly the double shanked bolts, and a raw hide mallet to drive in the plastic feet at the very end. Final results were very pleasing to behold and had a solid feel.

This audio stand is built like a rock. Very well made and sturdy! Was pretty easy to assemble.
Works as well as I hoped, holds all the equipment and is heavy enough to place a turntable on top! I would definitely recommend this unit.
