It will work with a 3.1 system. You select the speakers you have and in your case it will be straight forward, using the left, right, center, and sub 1 outputs.

This is a receiver, not an amplifier. It sends audio signals to an amplifier, which powers speakers, or it can send audio to independently powered speakers (e.g. with their own power source), but this doesn't drive speakers itself.

OK, 16 channels. Since there is no 16 channel amplifier, am I correct that I would need 2 amplifiers, 9 & 7 or 11 & 5? Thanks.

on Dec 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Probably. Depends a bit on how many subwoofers you're running, as those are generally independently powered so don't need separate amplifiers. But yeah if you're running more than ~11 non-sub channels then you'll probably need multiple amplifiers to power them all. However you don't necessarily need 15 channels of huge brute power, most of your surround and ceiling channels aren't going to be pushed the same way your front speakers would. Depending what existing gear and connections you have, you may also be able to use just the amplifier portion of an existing AVR to power some of the channels if you don't want to buy two multi-channel amps right away.

16 channel amplifiers do exist, but any combination of amplifiers that lead to the desired channel count will do - from 1x16 ch to 16x mono. 16 is the max, the device is also great with fewer channels.

You can configure however you want. You have
16 channels to configure. You can do all 16 speakers and no subs, 15 speakers and 1 sub, 14 speakers and 2subs, etc. Depending how many speakers (not subs) you plan on connecting, you will need that many amplifier channels. If you do a 7.2.4, that’s 13 channels used, meaning you need to amplify 11 channels so you can get a 11 channel amp, 9 channel and 2 channel amp, 5 channel and 7 channel smp with one unused. You select what speaks and subs to connect in the web based menu.

Does this product process 24 bit data? A review says it cannot at Audio Science Review. Please post your testing method if you say it can.
Chris P
on Feb 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The ASR measurement was incorrect. There is no truncation of 24 bits. There can be a short delay as the decoder detects a stream as PCM. The PCM input sensitivity control is designed to eliminate this delay. The delayed startup due to the PCM detection setting caused the test to falsely report bit truncation.

It appears the HTP-1 can process 24 bit data if you carefully read and edit the PCM detection section of the manual specified by "new User U" who is a MonoPrice employee. Unfortunately, even though the documentation says, and the front of the unit, allows for output up to 7 volts, the unit can not output 4v or higher - which is a setting I have on my NAD amp. Therefore my NAD amp would essentially get no signal from this unit.
I'll wait for either a fix to this unit or version 2.

Yes, it does process 24bit. If you read all the posts from that reviewer you will see he realized his measurements were incorrect and he tested while in a mute mode and made incorrect assumptions why it measured the way it did. That review has been thoroughly discussed on AVS Forum, just look for the official Monoprice HTP1 thread and you will find a lot of info on the product. The consensus is that it so far has been the most trouble free of this type of unit currently avaible.

Not at all. I use this amp to drive Goldenear SuperCinema X sound bar for front 3 and SuperSat 3s for surround and Atmos. It is PERFECT. It's clean and powerful with great dynamic range. It VANISHES in the background. But if you want to know output you can expect, search for "Peak SPL Calculator" and input the data. It will give you a good representation of what sound pressure level you'll achieve with this amp and those speakers.

Afraid I don't have any experience with those speakers but the amp definitely puts out (mine at least) the full advertised power. It may even be a bit conservative. I have it running front wide and 6 heights (7x running the other 7 base layer). I can also say that it blends quite well with the 7x despite being a "class D"... and it's a LOT lighter LOL

Hi Chris. I believe you are correct, that you will not be able to use this processor. I’m not aware of any conversion cables or something in between. They do have an image of the back of this processor that also reflect this. It’s a great processor though and love mine once I got some kinks worked out with the setup. I’ve paired mine up with one of the Monolith amps. The system can really crank.

You can use XLR-to-RCA adapters on the cables from the HTP-1 to your amps. It's not the preferred connection, but it will work. Problems are that the cables will not have Common Mode Noise Rejection and amps with single-ended (RCA) inputs usually don't have a sensitivity rating spec that you use to set the sensitivity of the amp in the HTP-1 output configuration.

As a certified electronics / instrumentation tech, I would greatly appreciate if you would have the option to either send the unit back to company OR allow those comfortable with such modifications to perform the upgrades themselves. Only reason I would see to send it back would be if a highly unique piece of equipment would be needed. I would suggest to have a list of equipment/tools necessary and again allow the end user to decide. It would certainly be a major factor with me on purchasing. Very much looking forward to owning one!

Only reason I would see to send it back would be if a highly unique piece of equipment would be needed. I would suggest to have a list of equipment/tools necessary and again allow the end user to decide. It would certainly be a major factor with me on purchasing. Very much looking forward to owning one!

I was hoping you would not have to send it in. That's the reason I'm not getting the Denon avr-X8500. It's crazy to shoot something across country to replace a little circuit board that I could totally do myself would not damage mark up the unit. Monoprice should reconsider and make this a user upgrade.

I very much agree with your thoughts here. I would recommend to the company also, if the end user is comfortable with such modifications and any required setup/calibration, they should be permitted to perform it. There is much risk and cost with sending a $4,000 piece of equipment back to the factory each and every time an upgrade is required. I would rather pay a slightly higher fee to Monoprice vs shipping the unit back, for providing instructions and other information required to perform any modifications. I would feel much safer AND I wouldn't be without the unit for a while.

Totally agree. HDMI board & bluetooth upgrades must be made as a secured Plug & Play attachment at the back of the unit if possible. I understand that not all hardware upgrades can be plug & play, some require changing multiple components inside that requires an expert disassemble and do the upgrade.

Does it have a GROUND SCREW for grounding with the Monolith multi channel amp?
John S

Even if it does not, you can use a chassis screw and accomplish the same thing.

Thanks, but are you sure? That approach does not always work. If the chassis is insulated from the Transformer ground, it will not work. In such cases you would need to drill a hole in the chassis to CAREFULLY feed an insulated wire inside the box and connect it to the transformer ground. Please note, your solution does not work on many EMOTIVA amps for this very reason: And the Drilling a hole in the chassis remedy is one that EMOTIVA have proposed!

You'll get MORE meaningful improvement if you treat your room properly with acoustic panels (diffusers mostly) and multiple subwoofers. The pre/pro will bring the most out of the 5.1 channel separation and sense of immersion, but this improved immersion will not happen if your room acoustics are terrible.

IMAX Enhanced at best is a screwy DSP and completely messes up your crossover settings - terribly executed.

Does it have a network standby mode to response to a network control and, if so, how much power does it use during network standby?

It has two boot modes slow boot eco mode which takes about a minute to boot from complete shut down and fast boot which is basically a standby mode which takes a couple of seconds. This is user configurable.

Extremely happy!
Incredible AVR! works flawlessly and benefits from lots of community support. I could not be happier with it in my 9.4.3 setup.
Pros: price. Custom GUI. Customization options. Stability. Sound quality.
Cons: lack of Dirac ART support (in the works)

Best Home Theater Processor below $10.000
I bought this processor after trying different AVRs and processors, that includes, Anthem AVM 70, Emotiva RMC-1, NAD T778 and my old Denon AVR X4500. This is undoubtedly the best processor I ever had. Hearing details in movies, that I had never heard before. I feel Atmos speakers are more active on HTP-1 compared to other processors/receivers. Dirac DLBC is a big plus and once DIRAC ART is officially available in Q4, HTP-1 would be unbeatable. One needs to look at the expensive options only if more than 16 channels are required.
Pros:
+ Sound Quality and features
+ DIRAC DLBC and ART (expected in Q4 2023)
+ Price
+ Custom Web GUI, B-EQ
Cons:
- (If I'm nitpicking, VOG and Center Height for Auro 3D would have been nice, but not really important)

AWESOME!
It has been said that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. The same can be said of audio gear. My system consists of 9 channels @ 90 wpc, PSB speakers, an OPPO 205 and the HTP-1. The HTP-1 is easily the strongest link in this chain. The versatility, adjustability and ease of doing so, and the sound is AWESOME!

Superb, flawless processor
I have my htp-1, dont know about any of you guys but this processor is by far a superb processor for me works flawless. Had a marantz av7705 loved it but moved up wanting dirac. Emotiva rmc-1l worst mistake of my life. We can call that piece of garbage the popcorn maker. O.s.d. always looking like the matrix, evertime hdmi source change made a popping noice irritated the hell outta my wife, and ffwd a movie rwd a movie same thing. Hit the jacpot with my htp-1. Not to mention owner only owned it 4 months, and payed only $2,200 for the unit. Glad i was patient bc i hit the japot on this unit. Looove it

impressed with this unit
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a B-stock units, since the new units have been on back order for the past year. I upgraded from Yamaha a 3070 to go separates. I am very pleased with the sound, it is much more natural, clear and distinct to each speaker, and this is even without dirac. It was a clear step up from my all-in-one receiver. I am glad I went with this unit and not spent several thousand more for AVM 90 or JBL. So far I have not encountered any bugs and has worked flawless even though my unit was B-stock.

This thing is something else
I thought I had a good setup with my Denon receiver and 7.3.4 setup, but I was wrong. This processor along with a Monolith amp and another on the way is night and day better. After I calibrated it I sat down and listened to music for a few hours followed by a movie. I melted into all of the content I consumed as if I was there and the room faded away, no exaggeration. This system is just in another league, you need it in your life hit the button and get it done. I stand behind this and am now sold on Monoprice's entry into the higher end home theater business. Good for you starting out right Monoprice, I look forward to further updates to come on this unit. See the massive AVSforum thread on this bad boy, that custom UI is fire! https://www.avsforum.com/threads/the-official-monoprice-monolith-htp-1-owners-thread.3112176

Fantastic engineering, value and customer service
I use this in a dedicated 13.1 home theater with Genelec speakers, 4 Genelec subs and 4 Theory Atmos in the ceiling. Projector is a JVC RS-3000/NX9 to a 10' screen.
My theater designer recommended as he had been hearing good things from AV installers for months.
This processor pulls it all together brilliantly, with flexibility and great ease. I'd love a 2-way control interface (via RS232 or LAN), but the web server works great. I've had this 8 months; there was a hiccup earlier this year with stability that they addressed quickly. Customer service has been responsive and forthright. It feels like a well-conceived & well-built flagship product vs a cheap/minimal execution of a spec sheet. I'd recommend without hesitation.

Amazing Unit
As many reviewers here have said I did extensive research on this unit before my purchase. It is by far the best 16 channel processor at this price or really any price period. The sound quality and features this unit has exceeds even many other 16 channel processors that cost thousands of dollars more. Add to that the fact that it has the best available AKM DACS in it. And the fact that it has some of the best customer support from a company I have ever seen in monoprice, they really do listen to their customers about features in improvements and fixing bugs. You cannot go wrong with purchasing this unit. It is worth every penny. I have very few issues with it if any at all it just works. And Dirac With bass control is the most amazing set up I have ever used it integrates your subwoofers Across all seats and accounts for timing and delay with all speaker channels beautifully. Not to mention that it is future proof and has boards that are upgradable inside for new features as they come along. If you were on the fence about buying this do not hesitate Like I said it is worth every penny.!

Superb
Went in with eyes wide open having read numerous user reviews and threads. But even so wasn?t expecting it to be so good.
Literally everything works as it should, sounds fantastic, really clean, hdmi switching fast, web interface superb, Dirac calibration works every time without fail. It?s just really solid all round and I can?t fault it.
Buy in confidence, there is nothing close to this level of performance at the price point.
